  24. I run a program that searchs for, and issues advisory cancels for,
  25. large binaries in the akr, biz, comp, misc, news, rec, and sci
  26. hierarchies.

  28. I have issued 23 cancels for large binary files (average size 112,665
  29. characters - total size 2,591,300 characters) posted to 7 different
  30. unmoderated discussion groups in the comp, rec, and sci hierarchies
  31. (with cross-posts into microsoft groups) as follows:
  32.   13 comp.graphics.animation
  33.    4 comp.emulators.apple2
  34.    2 comp.emulators.mac.executor
  35.    1 sci.med.nursing
  36.    1 rec.sport.unicycling
  37.    1 rec.arts.manga
  38.    1 comp.os.ms-windows.setup.win95
  39.     microsoft.public.win95.setup

  41. The cancels in non-targeted groups are a consequence of the way
  42. cross-posts work.  A cross-posted article has only one Message-ID.
  43. When it is canceled from one group it is canceled from all groups.

  54. The criteria used to search for this batch of large binaries were:
  55.    NEWSGROUPS: Unmoderated akr, biz, comp, misc, news, rec, or sci
  56.            (except for comp.binaries.apple2, comp.bugs.2bsd,
  57.         and rec.games.bolo)
  58.    BINARY: base64, binhex, uuencode, and xbtoa encoded files, etc.
  59.    SIZE: > 100,000 characters [(size * (# of parts - .5)), if multi-part]

  61. If you must post a binary to Usenet, please post it *only* to an
  62. appropriate binaries newsgroup such as alt.binaries.misc, and do *not*
  63. crosspost it to non-binaries groups.  Then, if you like, post something
  64. in the appropriate discussion group telling people where to find the
  65. binary in the binaries group (a pointer to the binary).  This will
  66. permit news administrators and users to decide for themselves whether
  67. to receive the binary files.
