- I just upgraded to both DOS and Linux versions of q6. And I definitely
- notice some differences between q5 and q6. Nothing changed except the
- version of the Executor binary. My CPU, disk, memory, etc...
- everything's the same. So (IMHO) the only thing that can account for
- these differences is the q6 upgrade.
-
- I mainly use Executor to play games. OK, I know this is not "real" work,
- and probably takes low priority over there at ARDI, but I just happen to
- like a lot of Mac games better than PC games, and there are some Mac game
- favorites of mine that I can't find good PC equivalents for.
-
- Eventually I'll be using it for "real" work under Linux, since good GUI
- word processors/spreadsheets/etc. aren't available for it, but
- unfortunately I haven't had a chance to go back to my parent's house
- (where I left my old Mac software -- I used to have a Mac) and pick up my
- old copies of Word, Excel, etc.
-
- But anyway, here's what I noticed:
-
- * Sound sounds rougher, though still intelligible. What I mean by
- "rougher" is that the sounds sound grainier, and have more choppy
- "pauses" in them.
-
- * Cursor movement is jerky. I noticed this only in Spaceward Ho!, since
- it's the only game that uses the mouse pointer (other games like Solarian,
- Maelstrom, etc. don't, and blank it out).
-
- * The "fast action" games I play (e.g. Solarian and Maelstrom), i.e. the
- ones that use heavy screen action and animation, etc., are slower and
- jerkier. Still playable, but definitely slower.
-
- Again, nothing has changed between q5 and q6 except Executor itself -- my
- computer still has the same CPU, RAM, etc. I still use the same old
- batch file to start up Executor. I haven't even installed any new
- software (other than the q6 upgrade).
-
- I didn't (wasn't able) to test this under E/Linux, since I run FreeBSD,
- which doesn't support use of the sound driver under Linux emulation,
- and I consider (most) games without sound to be somewhat pointless.
- However, I did run Spacware ho! under FreeBSD, and it seemed to run OK,
- maybe even a bit faster. Odd...
