  1. Is there such a program or hardware device that will rum Macintosh

  42. Typing "executor -help" at the DOS prompt will give you a whole list
  43. of command-line options.  You can use "executor -help > help.txt" to
  44. redirect the output to a text file (it's more than one screen long).
  45.  
  46. One of those options (-refresh) allows you to change the refresh rate.
  47. Also, you can use Control-Apple-5 when inside a program to change a
  48. number of different things for that program.

  84. OK, here's the real story. On, say, a 486DX-2/66, the processor
  85. core--on chip--runs at 66 MHz, while the bus interface runs at
  86. 33 MHz. This is significant because the core can, therefore,
  87. execute the most-commonly occuring, simple instructions at a
  88. rate of one per clock; i.e., under ideal conditions, it can
  89. really, truly execute instructions at a rate of 66 million per
  90. second (if only for a short burst). When it must go off chip
  91. to get, say, a data item, that data reference can only be
  92. satisfied at the slower 33-MHz rate.
  93.  
  94. So, a "120-MHz" 486 can, under ideal conditions, execute instructions
  95. at a rate of 120 million per second.
  96.  
  97. Now, when Apple decided to start calling its, for example, powerbooks
  98. "33/66-MHz" PowerBooks, I just had to laugh. This shows just how
  99. desparate they are. The 68040 does indeed use two different clocks signals.
  100. This is an implementation choice that does not necessarily have
  101. anything to do with exactly how the internal processor core operates.
  102.  
  103. A "33/66-MHz" 68040 (or '040lc) can execute simple instructions
  104. under ideal circumstances at a maximum rate of 33 million per
  105. second. Motorola might have chosen to use a 133-Mhz clock input
  106. to the chip for implementation reasons, but that wouldn't make the
  107. core faster. The pipeline can retire simple instructions under ideal
  108. circumstances only at the 33-MHz rate. It's a 33-Mhz chip by any
  109. real measure.

  111. The "33/66-MHz" 68040 chips are the same chips that used to be called
  112. "33-MHz" 68040 chips.

  136. I just picked up this gem (UniVBE 5.1) from the Executor_DOS directory on 
  137. FTP.ARDI.COM.  I would fervently urge all of you using E/D to use it.
  138.  
  139. Why?  Quite simply, it RADICALLY increased my graphics performance -- AT 
  140. LEAST 2x.
  141.  
  142. A few cases in point:
  143.  
  144. * I reported to this list a while ago that Solarian II, one of my 
  145. all-time favourite Mac games, worked great under Executor, but had some 
  146. problems, like slowness/jerkiness of animation (I have 486DX4/100) and 
  147. some graphics drawing problems.  The game is still playable, but can 
  148. get real frustrating at times.  Well, with UniVBE installed, the game 
  149. runs SMOOTH AS SILK -- no jerky motions when playing it, it's just like 
  150. as if I were to play it on my (now defunct) color Mac.  And it got rid of 
  151. (to the best of my knowledge) the (very few) graphics redraw problems 
  152. I've experienced.

  154. * The AppNotes said that Maelstrom runs but is only playable on a 
  155. Pentium.  Unfortunately I don't have that kind of money.  And, indeed, 
  156. when I tried it on my Executor, it was really jerky, even more so than 
  157. Solarian.  Well, after UniVBE ... not any more!  Plays just like it does 
  158. on my Mac.

  165. OK, so maybe this is because of my video card (I have a VLB card, Orchid 
  166. Fahrenheit 1280+ VLB) but hey, people should know this, esp. those with 
  167. older video cards, as it will probably help you greatly.  I don't know, 
  168. it might even be beneficial to those owning somewhat newer video 
  169. hardware.  It can't hurt, and is definitely worth a try.
