- In a recent post about doom under Executor it was stated that there might
- be some tips available to speed up Wolf 3D under executor. Please post any
- of the tips you may have. I used to love Wolf 3D years ago when it came
- out on the PC. My old SI does'nt have the juice to make it enjoyable. My
- pentium 75 runs it pretty well, but if there's anything else I can Tweak
- it would be cool. The graphics and the sound seem to blow away the old PC
- version but that might be my poor recollection.
-
- Thanks Much.

-
- The problem has to do with the way Executor accesses the Digital to
- Analog Converter (DAC) that VGA based screens use to display colors.
-
- Mat Hostetter says:
-
- ``"Standard" DACs are 6-bit, so you can get 64 visibly distinct shades of
- gray. Some DACs support 8-bit, which let you get 256 shades of gray.
- 8-bit DACs (when present) can be manipulated with a VBE 2.0 extension
- Executor doesn't yet use.''
-
- The problem is that VBE 2.0 is sufficiently new that we don't yet have
- drivers for our machines that provide that particular piece of
- functionality, so although we could put code into Executor to detect
- this extension and use it when present, we wouldn't be able to test
- it. There is a new version of UniVBE due out real soon now and that
- may change things. We hope to support 8-bit DACs (when they're
- present) by the time Executor 2 ships.

- : Did anyone take any pictures of the Mac convention at ARDI's booth?
-
- No pics, sorry. :) It was a simple little affair, a large
- white sign saying something like "Executor: run Mac apps on a PC"
- and a nice Pentium and laptop displaying working demos of Executor.
-
- It was nice seeing the folks at ARDI there, after talking
- to them on the net and seeing posts on this newsgroup. :)
-
- : What was the outcome? Were there big crowds checking out Executor?
-
- Quite a few people came by, actually, considering how
- simple the ARDI booth was in comparison to the others.
-
- (In all fairness, the simplicity was partly that they were rushed
- getting to MacWorld, and they were contrasted with companies like
- Microsoft and Symantic and Fractal Design.)
-
- No offense to the ladies, but it was amazing how many
- people there were NOT geeks, and lots of the booths had beautiful
- women displaying the products. I have to say, there were some
- studly (study=knowledgable) women there, showing off features of
- their products. Actually, it would have been nice to have met the
- famous "Mellisa" of ARDI. :)
-
- Just youthful blatherings about Executer. :)
-
- Okay everybody, "Buy Executor!" :)
-
- See ya!
