- After 64 hours of downtime, vorlon.mit.edu (aka narn.mit.edu) has
- returned to service. At 10:30 am Wednesday morning, vorlon suffered
- a SCSI controller failure. (This was originally determined to have
- been a hard drive failure, however futher testing indicated that the
- SCSI controller was likely to blame.) On Thursday, Buslogic was
- contacted and a BT-946C Rev E card was cross shipped out of warranty
- to arrive the next day. This arrived via FedEx Friday morning, and
- after installation and testing vorlon returned to service at 2 AM
- Saturday morning.
-
- While vorlon was down, I also replaced the processor cooling fan
- which was likely to fail. I also replaced the power supply with a
- 300W+300W redundant power supply, as the previous power supply's fan
- had failed several weeks ago.
-
- I apologize for any inconvenience caused by this outage. My
- hardware is now required to send me e-mail at least 1 week before
- it will fail. :-)

- I begin work on Monday with an organization that has only Macintosh
- computers. If I type a plain ASCII file in DOS, can I easily open it
- on a Macintosh, or do I need some sort of emulator program to save it
- in a format particular to Mac? I'll be doing all of my writing on my
- IBM Thinkpad, and want to be prepared.
-
- Thanks in advance for any help.
