  18. There are two different kinds of Zip drives:  The parallel port version
  19. (which is a bit slower and intended only for PC's) and the SCSI version
  20. which can be used on both PC's and Macs (it includes software for both
  21. platforms but doesn't include a SCSI adapter so that's an added expense for
  22. PC owners).  Personally, I would stick with the SCSI version since it's more
  23. likely to be supported under Linux and is a lot faster.

  25. Yesterday I installed a regular 230MB Bernoulli drive (SCSI) at work on our
  26. 100MHz Pentium, and although it works fine with Windows NT and DOS, it does
  27. NOT work with Linux. :-(

  29. One other thing (sorry to be so off-topic):  Has anyone else been having
  30. problems with the ELF version of Linux?  I thought ELF was really great and
  31. stable when I first installed it, but then common programs like
  32. "fromdos/todos" and xbench would just Segmentation Fault for no reason.  I
  33. think it's a bug with either the ELF support in GCC 2.6.3 or the libc 5.0.9
  34. library (or probably compiling libc 5.0.9 UNDER GCC 2.6.3)..  Anyway, I
  35. tried to build libc under GCC 2.7.0 and when I installed it, it was
  36. corrupted, and now I'll have to recopy those libraries from a boot floppy or
  37. I can't even boot :-(  In the meantime I'm very disenchanted with Linux, and
  38. I've decided to make the jump to FreeBSD when the next version is released
  39. in September.  There is a Linux emulation library for FreeBSD which lets you
  40. play Linux DOOM, perhaps with sufficient work one could use Executor on it.
  41. I'll update this list as I find out more...
