Sounds to me like your video card is defaulting to a crummy refresh rate. You need to run some software (my Diamond SteedStar 64 has a utility called SSMODE) that will kick the card into high gear from a DOS session. Windows and OS/2 drivers do this for you, but in DOS it often has to be explicitly done. That also applies to OS/2 VDMs, BTW, and possibly other VMs in other environments as well.
