Executor/DOS also has a new, experimental "-oldtimer" option. If you do:
executor -oldtimer
Executor will use only the 18.2 Hz PC timer, and not the 1024 Hz PC
timer. We are hoping that this will fix the mystery problem where
some systems just get a black screen on startup and Executor freezes.
Unfortunately, we don't have access to a machine exhibiting these
symptoms, so it's very hard for us to track this down.
One user also presented me with evidence that "-oldtimer" may make
Executor run noticeably faster on some DOS configurations (perhaps
only machines with certain BIOSes?) Until he tries it, though, that's
just speculation.
The drawback to "-oldtimer" is that Executor won't be able to provide
the 60 Hz clock that some Mac programs expect. I believe that OS/2
Warp and (some?) Windows setups don't allow Executor to use the 1024
Hz timer anyway. You can find out which you have by running the
"Globe" demo and choosing the "sync to VBL" menu. If you have the
fast timer, you'll see 60 fps. If you have the slow timer, you'll see
18 fps.
If you have a system where the screen just turns black on startup, or
takes a very long time to reach the splash screen, please give this
1.99o4 try. If it makes a difference, or even if it doesn't, please
