  33. I don't think Quix is ARDI's competition.  We do plan to make Executor
  34. so that you can drop System 7.5 on top of it and then get full
  35. compatibility.  When we start making those mods, help from Quix or
  36. Apple would be worthwhile, but would probably not be something we
  37. could do, due to legal constraints.

  51. "The chip" in question here is the PowerPC chip.  Although it's not
  52. immediately obvious, even when you read the entire article, what Quix
  53. has done is made a PPC based IBM machine run Mac software, similarly
  54. to what they did with 680x0 based NeXT computers.  Essentially they
  55. have written enough glue to make Apple's own software work on a
  56. slightly different hardware configuration.

  58. Presumably the ARDI engineers could do this themselves, were they not
  59. "clean" engineers -- i.e. engineers who have never seen any of the
  60. implementation details of Apple's OS or Toolbox.

  62. I have little doubt that Apple could have done this work themselves.
  63. If they haven't (and they may have done so in secret, for all I know),
  64. it's more a political issue than a technical one.  After all, Apple's
  65. MAE team have the MacOS running on SPARCs and HPs.
