Instead of the somewhat tiresome method of booting a virtual DOS session from floppy (I'm always misplacing the damned disk), you can set up an DOS boot disk image file on your hard disk & use it instead. This methods a bit quicker and a lot more convienient. All that you need to do is create a DOS boot disk with autoexec & config files set to your needs (but remember that your need DEVICE=C:\os2\mdos\fsaccess.sys to get to HPFS partitions) and then open an OS/2 command session. From here all you need to do is type VMDISK A: DOS.IMG, and the file DOS.IMG will be created in the current directory. Finally, change (or create) your Executor Icon's settings to boot DOS not from A: but from C:\...\DOS.IMG. Hey-Presto! Executor boots quicker (and won't take the system down when those buggy apple applications crash the finest piece of engineering since the wheel!!!). These intermediate releases are not well tested by ARDI, but we think they fix some important bugs in 1.99n so please try them out if you are bold. Note that we've switched to a sane naming scheme for the BleedingEdge releases; "vesafix.zip" would have been called "dos199n3.zip" under the new scheme. Here is an excerpt from the README in the BleedingEdge directory describing the relevant bug fixes. - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dos199n4.zip Upgrade from E/D 1.99n to E/D 1.99n4 (intermediate release) THIS IS FOR DOS USERS ONLY! This upgrade fixes: - Some video boards only allow 4 bit graphics with VBE 2.0 drivers. - Cycling through Desktop Textures patterns causes a crash. - Cursor "paints" the screen. - Executor crashes right away under OS/2 Warp. - Executor leaves junk on screen when changing # colors w/alt-shift-5. - Some serious printing problems. - BBEdit Lite 3.0 Preferences panel crashes. - Some problems with accessing CD-ROMs (not tested much yet) and possibly other disk drives. linux199n4.gz Upgrade from E/L 1.99n to E/L 1.99n4 (intermediate release) THIS IS FOR LINUX USERS ONLY! This upgrade fixes: - Cycling through Desktop Textures patterns causes a crash. - Some serious printing problems. - BBEdit Lite 3.0 Preferences panel crashes. - Minor screen update ugliness. - Some problems crossing mount points. - Executor consumes all available memory. - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Feedback is encouraged. Thanks! - -Mat ------------------------------ From: mat@ardi.com (Mat Hostetter) Date: Tue, 11 Jul 95 00:46 MDT Subject: A note about the BleedingEdge releases I should point out that since the BleedingEdge releases only replace one file in 1.99n, they are much smaller than a full distribution. The DOS update is around 450K and the Linux update is around 420K. - -Mat ------------------------------ From: Hugh Mclenaghan <hughmcl@chem.gla.ac.uk> Date: Tue, 11 Jul 1995 12:24:09 +0100 Subject: BleedingEdge (vesafix.zip) Hi, I've downloaded 'vesafix.zip' and it seems to sort out the mode change problems and the mouse problems that were present in the 1.99n release. Well done! These were important bugs to get fixed. I'm just going to download the 1.99n4 and see if the disk/CD bugs have been fixed. Hugh McLenaghan P.S. I just got Executor/DOS 1.99n and tried to run it on my computer. No luck. The screen goes black, then Executor checks the disk drives. The computer does not seem to lock up, but the screen never comes back. In fact, if I reboot, the reboot process goes normally, but the screen remains black. My system configuration: Quantex 486/66 16MB RAM ALGX Cirrus Logic 5434 Windows 95 I have tried the following: * Boot to DOS rather than Windows * Run Executor with -size 640x480 * Run Executor with -applzone 8192 * Re-download and reinstall Executor * Run univbe51 * Boot with a clean system + mouse driver * Boot with a clean system + mouse driver + univbe51 I am a registered user of E/Linux, but over the summer I don't have a machine with Linux loaded, so I was hoping to run E/D. Any help anyone can give me would be appreciated! - - Tom Kludy ------------------------------ From: Sang Jin Hong <sangjin+@CMU.EDU> Date: Tue, 11 Jul 1995 13:25:34 -0400 (EDT) Subject: Win95 & Executor For those of you who use Win95 with Executor, I read from the FAQ that with Win95, people are able to switch with ALT-TAB. For me, it never works, it either beeps and won't let me go back to Win95 w/o quitting, or it brings me back to Win95, but no way to get back to E/D. The Executor crashes if I try to go back, with the garbage screen. (I forgot if I had to reboot or if I could just terminate Executor and go on with Win95) My setup for E/D is just a plain dos pif with AUTO memory for everything and -nosplash as a command line parameter. Thanks for any information. .sjh. ------------------------------ From: justin@dragon.axs.net Date: Mon, 10 Jul 1995 23:42:56 -0500 (CDT) Subject: Re: CLGD 5434 crashes E/DOS immediately One thing that I learning was that you had to have the dos in you path statement PATH=C:\DOS; and the other stuff. Good. Once again, i no longer have to look at DOS's incapable face. One thing i noticed. At least in OS/2, Executor won't load unless there is a CD-ROM in the drive. Haven't tried it in DOS. The original package didn't need a disk. Was this anticipated? I'm really impressed with the speed. Now my 486 is faster and has faster graphics than my friends 25MHz 040. He's impressed too. The "executor" contained in this file is the same as the "old" 1.99n4 Linux update, so if you figured out how to use the old update there's no need to grab this one.
