I have installed NIHimage 1.55 "successfully". It doesn't kill me that offen. But many of the functions work only under system 7.x ( don't remmember now which). I have oppened gray images it goes just fine but I have problem with collor images: it mixes the collors so that they(images) look like negatives but they are not.That is all. I haven't work with image so mutch that I can help more. Sorry!
