Bob H. mentioned that several SVGA cards have TSRs to make them VESA
compliant. If you can't find such a TSR for your card, check on
CompuServe for a Universal VESA BIOS Extension, a program which recognizes
many SVGA cards and provides the VESA extensions for them. The author
of this program boasts that his program is often faster on a given card
than native mode.
