Subject: Executor/DOS 1.2e is out
Sender: Executor-Owner@nacm.com
Precedence: bulk
Hi Folks,
Executor/DOS 1.2e is out (exexp12e.zip), but instead of it being in
the normal place, you have to pick it up from swcp.com in the
"pub/tmp" directory (remember to use BINARY mode). It's not clear
whether the ardi directory will remain on ftp.cs.unm.edu, but I can't
get in to modify it now (5am Friday morning). The site "swcp.com" is
real slow and will even be more so if tons of people hit it to get
exexp12e.zip, so if UNM CS *has* kicked us off, I'll try to find a
new ARDI repository ASAP. Let me know if you have any suggestions.
1.2e runs under Windows and OS/2. I can't believe how much trouble
it took to get back this functionality which we lost when we went up
to 1.2c. The problem was not that we added broken code -- we didn't.
We just ran into a bug in the DOS extender that we hadn't seen before
which required me to learn much more about DOS, 80x86s, and protected
mode programming than I had planned.
For whatever reason, 1.2e won't run the game "1000 miles", but that's
the only step backwards that we're aware of between 1.2e and any
other previous version of Executor. If that's the only problem you
find while testing it, we'll change the splash screen a little bit,
make a corresponding demo version and release 1.2e to the general
public as 1.3. We'll be sending it free of charge to all
Executor/DOS 1.x customers who sent in their registration forms.
We'll also include a note about the state of 2.0.
Speaking of which, a couple of weekends ago we merged the latest 1.x
sources with all our color mods. The resultant version of Executor
isn't currently as robust as 1.2e, nor even as robust as the
1.2+color mods version that preceeded it and it won't run under
Windows or OS/2, but is neat to see, since it runs in color. If you
really want to take a peek now, rather than wait until it's a little
more stable, pick up the file "execolor.mog" (in pub/tmp on swcp.com)
and use the transmog program from exexp12e.zip to convert a
production version of 1.2 into a color version. The command line
you'll want is:
transmog -f execolor.mog
Remember, we've already fixed a bunch of the bugs that are in the
color version that transmog will create. I'll try to get a better
version ftpable once we have a better site to use than swcp.com. I'm
*much* more intested in peoples 1.2e comments than hearing about any
bugs in the color version -- we know they're there.
