Another great screw-up from ARDI. Executor 1.3a doesn't run Excel
(or a few other programs). As you know, there was a large lag
between the release of Executor 1.3 and 1.3a. During that time we
greatly rearranged the guts of Executor (to work more nicely on
non-NEXT machines), and we fixed many little bugs and added a few
features (not all of which are additions to the NEXTSTEP version).
One of the more recent changes must have broken something.
I'll be looking into the Excel problem tonight, and hopefully have a
fix by tomorrow. If it isn't fixed by then, it won't be over the
weekend, because I'll be in West Palm Beach doing "Craig Crossman's
Computer America Show" (a nationally syndicated radio show). Once I
get back, this bug will be highest priority.
As to MacInTax for '93, I can't say now, because we don't have a copy
to test with today. We had such a hassle getting one last year that
I'll just buy one instead of trying to get a free copy, but I won't
be able to do that until I come back from the radio show. If anyone
has a copy and is bold enough to try installing it on a Mac and then
bring all the files over and test it under Executor 1.3a (or 1.3b due
out shortly), that might give us some information. MacInTax is
pretty high on the totem pole, but there are things in front of it:
Excel fixed
<< two separate sets of negotiations with two OEMs >>
Executor/DOS working under Windows (E/D to be renamed E/PC)
Either a cripple-ware demo or a shareware version of E/PC
MacInTax
Excel should be fixed very soon, but the sets of negotiations are
more problematic. They'll probably either be very short (because we
hit a snag early on) or be a bit drawn out, but provide ARDI with big
bucks (each is worth enough to fund a complete Executor 2.0
development team). E/D is mostly already running under Windows and
the code for a cripple-ware demo or shareware version of E/PC already
exists, so that shouldn't take too long, *but* even when MacInTax is
high priority, until I see what the new version looks like, I can't
really comment.
Sorry that this appears to be dragging on forever. What we're doing
over here is jockeying for position so that we'll be able to get E/D
2.0 (color support, most apps (inc. MacInTax) working, etc.) out the
door as soon as possible.

Subject: E/NS 1.3b available soon
Hi Folks,
Executor 1.3b will be on the archives soon. It's all built over
here, it's being pushed through a 9600 baud modem right now. Excel
runs fine and says that it has 6Mb available now. Those of you with
8Mb NeXT machines may see a little slowdown if you use big
spreadsheets, but since you weren't able to use them at all before, I
think the change is a worthwhile one.
Thanks for quickly pointing out 1.3a's problems.

Subject: Executor/NEXTSTEP 1.3b is on ftp.cs.unm.edu
Sorry for the delay. Normally we push things across using uucp, but
our connection to the outside world is so flakey right now (they have
new, stable, hardware on order) that uucp kept trying all night, but
never got it across. I finally brought it across by hand and
installed it in the usual place.
If you have an ADB-keyboard based NeXT and you are running NEXTSTEP
3.0, then you'll need a new copy of "ExecutorPatcher", since Executor
can't autodetect ADB-keyboards under NEXTSTEP 3.0 (it can under 3.1
and 3.2). One has been written, but so far it's untested. Send me
e-mail if you want to test it, or if you want me to send it to you
after someone else tests it. Let me know if you can handle NeXTmail.

Subject: E/NS on sale for $99
Hi Folks,
Executor/NEXTSTEP is now on sale for $99, although I won't be posting
to comp.sys.next.announce until after I've got gnats working again
and responded to the backlog of requests for information. The only
difference with this sale is that the $99 will not include "mailed"
free updates. You'll still be entitled to pick them up via anonymous
ftp, but we won't be sending them via US mail to people who purchase
under this new sale. Existing users will continue to receive the
updates via US mail.
I try to send info to this list before it hits the general public.
That's why I'm telling you now.

Subject: Demoware version of Executor/DOS available via anonymous ftp
Hi Folks,
To get more exposure, we've made a demoware version of Executor/DOS.
We've also incorporated some of the most recent development into a
new version. Because we've never put out a demoware version of
Executor/DOS before, we made a tentative one and have put that out on
ftp.cs.unm.edu in pub/ardi/Executor_DOS/executor.zip.
Technically, what's there is called "Executor/DOS-DEMO 1.0a", but
I'll roll "the real thing" this coming weekend and call it
"Executor/DOS-DEMO 1.1" and also create "Executor/DOS 1.1". If
you're an existing Executor/DOS customer, we'll be happy to send you
a copy of 1.1 for $7.50 to cover materials, postage and handling.
Unlike our NEXTSTEP demoware, the DOS demoware can't be converted to
the real thing with an authorization key, you need a real floppy from
us. However, the only difference between the real thing and the demo
copy is the demo copy runs for only ten minutes at a time and it
can't access Mac formatted SCSI disks or CD-ROMs.
This version of Executor/DOS actually runs under Windows. We haven't
been asleep over here.
BTW, I am a couple days behind in answering my mail. I'll be
catching up Tuesday night.

Subject: Executor/DOS DEMO 1.1 available via anonymous ftp
Hi Folks,
I know most of you are NEXTSTEP oriented, so I apologize for this bit
of junk mail, but I need your help in getting the word out.
Executor/DOS is now similar to Executor/NEXTSTEP in that there's a
publically redistributable demo version available via anonymos ftp.
Right now it's on ftp.cs.unm.edu in
pub/ardi/Executor_DOS/executor.zip, I will try to get it to spread
from there. E/D 1.1 is able to run under Windows and has a few more
bug fixes in it over E/D 1.0. I'll be cooking up E/NS 1.3c soon and
they'll be level again.
If you know anyone with an account on CompuServe, America On-Line,
BIX, Prodigy or any Bulletin board, please find out for me the best
way for us to get Executor/DOS/DEMO-1.1 out there.
I haven't yet posted to the PC and Mac announce newsgroups because as
always, the build and release that should have been done on Saturday
wasn't done until just now (Monday morning), so my loquaciousness
level is low.
In NEXTSTEP news, we're keeping the $99/machine sale through at least
the second week in March. I still hope to make our gnats database
more accessible. If there are no E/D 1.1 surprises I should be able
to work on that and the latest MacInTax starting Wednesday.
We've just upgraded our phone system. It may take us a week to get
used to the new way of doing things, but there should be fewer lost
messages now that we're using voice mail instead of "While you were
out" notes.
