- Dear Folks,
-
- Most, but not yet all non-demo copies of Executor 1.2.1 have been
- mailed. Other than a few hand-delivered copies, the first copies
- were sent starting the 6th of October. Most copies within the states
- have been sent UPS ground, most non-US copies have been sent US mail.
- Most people who have been given free copies of Executor in the past
- will continue to get free copies, but we had to delay your copies
- being sent so that we could ship them to customers who have purchased
- copies since WE SOLD OUT OUR FIRST PRINTING of the manuals (hooray).
-
- Things are going exceedingly well even though it's taxing our current
- capabilities, since, as you may know, Bill Goldman is no longer with
- us. The good thing is that our current revenues suggest that we'll
- be able to hire between two to four new full time people early in
- November when our Net/30 money starts coming in.
-
- We've already started the process to print more binders (printing
- binders should take more time than printing the manual itself,
- although we ran into enough trouble with the manual printers that
- we're changing printers) and hope to have more copies in ten days.
-
- We just found out that Executor doesn't well on the ADB keyboards.
- If you're in that situation and you've ordered a copy of Executor,
- please be advised that we're working (round the clock; we spend our
- days answering phones) on a patch to Executor 1.2.1 that we can
-
- leave on an ftp site for those with ftp
-
- NeXTmail to those with NeXTmail connections to the internet
-
- and
-
- send on a floppy to those that don't fit in the top two
- categories
-
- In light of my previous inability to accurately guess when 1.2.1
- would ship, I hesitate to give an estimate when we'll have the patch
- on unmvax.cs.unm.edu, but it is top priority.
-
- Thanks for all the orders.
-

- Subject: reading EPS and TIFF files in Word 5 under Executor 1.2.1
-
- Dear Folks,
-
- I answered a question on the net that you may also be wondering about. The
- question was how to get EPS and TIFF images into a Word document. This will
- only work with Word 5 and only under Executor 1.2.1 (or greater):
-
-
-
- Dear Jagannatha and other interested folks,
-
- Although you can't directly "paste" TIFF or EPS images into Word running
- under Executor, you can save TIFF and EPS images to a file and then read
- the file into Word 5 running on Executor.
-
- [long pause while I look up the relevant section in our new manual...
- hmm... although EPS and TIFF are in our index, none of the references
- address this problem... let's skim the entire manual (it's only about
- 100 pages)...]
-
- I'm VERY embarrassed that this information isn't in our manual, but here's
- what you need to do:
-
- 1. Save the graphic to a file. If you're saving a TIFF file, be sure
- to save *without* an alpha-component.
-
- 2. Run Word 5 under Executor and position the cursor where you want the
- graphic to be placed.
-
- 3. Choose "Picture..." from the "Insert" menu.
-
- 4. Choose "All Files" from the "List Files of Type:" pop-up menu.
- NOTE: This step is needed because the file containing the graphic was
- created on the NeXT and hence the newly created file doesn't have
- a "type" associated with it. If you created a TIFF or EPS file from
- a program running under Executor, you could skip this step.
-
- 5. Select the file that contains the graphic and click on the "Insert"
- button.
-
- 6. Word 5 will now present you with a list of convertors that might be
- relevant for reading in this file. Pick "TIFF" or "EPS" as approrpriate.
- This step is necessary for the same reason that step 4 is.
-
- Your Graphic will now be embedded in your document in its original size.
- To resize, select the lower-right corner of the bounding box and hold down
- the shift key as you move the corner.
-
- TIFF images will be visible as images, although they'll be displayed on
- the screen in black and white, even though internally they're stored as
- (and will be printed as) gray scale.
-
- EPS graphics will only be visible as rectangles that have the filename in
- them. However, the graphic *will* be printed in PostScript when you print.
-
- By the way, our manual was written entirely in Word 5 under Executor 1.2.1,
- so anything that you see in it (we use both embedded TIFF and embedded EPS
- images) is something that you can do as well. No smoke, no mirrors.
-
- I apologize for the omission of this information in our manual. Posting
- to the net worked in this case, but I'd suggest first sending e-mail to
- questions@ardi.com, and if that doesn't work sending e-mail to the Executor
- mailing list ("executor@ictv.com" to join send e-mail to
- "executor-request@ictv.com").
-
- NOTE: We just discovered that Executor 1.2.1 doesn't work with the
- new ADB keyboards. We're frantically putting together a patch to
- remedy this and have been slightly remiss in answering e-mail sent
- to questions@ardi.com. Expect replies shortly. Since our ad in
- NeXTWORLD, we've been swamped with calls and orders. We'll be hiring
- another tech-support person or four in November and that too will
- help restore us to our normally fast replying selves.

- Subject: Does executer run ...
-
- I got a recent list of what executer runs and doesn't run. There are two applications that
- weren't mentioned that I am curious if anybody tested:
-
- Matlab/Simulab - I imagine this would be a tough port, but I think the demand
- would be fairly high
-
- CLIPS - this is a NASA freeware program. Not worh porting, but has
- anybody tested it?

-
- I was wondering if anyone has tried using Meeting Maker from On Technology
- under Executor. The office I work in is a pretty mixed environment of
- NeXT, Mac and Sun. The Sun has a so-so Mac emulator package running on
- it. All I need now is a mac emulator for the NeXT and I'll be all smiles.
-
- Anybody know?
