I tried to ask this by direct e-mail but didn't get anything back, so
here goes:

I don't have access to a Macintosh with a 1.4MB drive, so floppy transfers
are out.  On the other hand, I do have modem access to an Amiga 3000
(Unix SVR4) which in turn connects by TCP/IP to a Macintosh where my
programs reside.  Questions:

1) how do I transfer the programs from Mac to Amiga, such that transferring
from Amiga to NeXT gets me something usable?

2) once the stuff is on the NeXT, how do I get it into the ExecutorVolume
such that Executor-MSW will find it?

I'd appreciate any replies.  I've had Executor for over a week now, and all
I've been able to run are the demo programs.

    I think the information about viruses below may be of
sufficient interest to merit a reply to the entire mailing group.
This is my response to the questions posed by John Troxell

sumex.stanford.edu has an "info-mac" subdirectory that has tons of
stuff.  There are many others, check out the FAQ (answers to
Frequently Asked Questions) in the various mac newsgroups if you have
access to netnews.

Pick up the files as either ".hqx" or ".bin" and put them within
ExecutorVolume and run Binhex on them.  Make sure you use "binary"
mode to transfer files whose extension is ".bin".  If you have NCSA
telnet you can use the "Macbinary" option to copy files from a Mac
over to your machine, where you can unbinhex them (don't use
"Macbinary" with .hqx or .bin files, they are already in a form
Binhex understands).

Yes and No and Yes:

    Yes) viruses could mess up the "mac universe" that Executor
provides you with.  As far as I know the threat is limited to your
MACVOLUMES.  I suppose someone could write a virus that specifically
guns for the rest of your NeXT but with only a couple hundred people
running Executor, I doubt anyone would go to the trouble of doing
that.

    No) I suspect that most viruses won't work anyway because we
do not execute code out of the system file.  The standard "MDEF"s are
compiled into Executor and are special cased.  I really don't know
much about all the virsuses that are out there so I make no promises.

    Yes) One serious consiseration about viruses is right now I
know of no way to detect them under Executor.  The virus checkers
that run as INITs or CDEVs won't work because we don't support INITs
or CDEVs.  I don't know about the virus checkers that examine your
filesystem, but I do know that our System file has much less in it
than a typical System file and that may confuse things.

Subject: MacInTax and Quicken

Dear Folks,

    ARDI employee Bill Goldman was kind enough to purchase
MacInTax and Quicken on the condition that ARDI repay him when ARDI
can afford to do so (perhaps when he gets the last nine months pay
that we've been holding back on).  As such they are being qualified
right now as we also work on Excel 3.0a and Word 5.00 (and while we
work on Printing and the synthetic CPU).  Our intent is to have both
MacInTax and Quicken running perfectly by the time the free software
upgrade comes out.  I'll let you know if the plan changes.

Yes, but I prefer mac.archive.umich.edu instead because they have very
good index  and descriptions there.  And if you  are from  Europe then
there  is  Sumex mirror site  at Sweden (lth.se) and then nic.funet.fi
where I keep my own Mac archives.

Not completely  true. ".bin" files are MacBinary  files. At least that
is how  I  keep them. ".hqx"   are  normal  ASCII files like UUENCODED
files. ".cpt", ".sit" and ".sea" files are MacBinary files.

Disinfectant is a normal application that scans and removes viruses.

Subject: SCSI and serial access

Does executor provide access to the SCSI buss? As in can a program
drive a SCSI peripheral that the NeXT has no driver for.

Does it provide access to the serial ports? This would be for access
to code keys (dongles) that enable use of software.

Subject: My problem with Executor MSW

    Well, I installed it ok . . . and basically it seems to work . . .
    well, kinda.  It only runs when I login as the root.

    I looked through the whole manual and it doesn't say a thing
    about this . . . when I execute it when logged in as myself,
    it goes so far as to display the menu bar, but then just dies
    off.

    Both applications do this.

    I'm guessing that this is not normal behavior.

    Does anyone have any ideas?

Only a guess here, but did you run Installer.app while logged in as root?
I'd guess that if you installed it using a non-root login, it wouldn't be
able to make set-uid what it needs to make set-uid, so it would only
work ok when uid didn't need to be set- i.e. when you actually were root...
