- 1. To the list-person: If you are going to keep sending
- these out with reply-address (From:) as the whole list alias,
- most of the bright and busy people are going to leave the
- list.
-
- 2. To the guy with the question about Quark: If Quark would
- run, don't you think they'd publicize it? They stupidly
- decided to do Microsoft Word -- a program that's much _less_
- good than the several word-processors already running on NeXT
- with a real NextStep interface -- first, and it ain't even
- done. Who in his right mind would pay for the privilege of
- running that second-rate program on his NeXT? If ARDI had any
- brains, they'd have done Quark first. They'd have charged
- $1,000 as soon as Quark would run -- most desktop publishing
- people like me would pay it -- and then think about cutting
- the price for the other, less demanding folks later, instead
- of raising it for the better people later.
-
- 3. If you're asking a question that ARDI refused to answer or
- couldn't, it makes sense to post it to this list. If you're
- asking a question of ARDI, direct it to them and please keep
- it the hell off this list. Then, if you get an interesting
- and helpful answer, post that answer for the rest of us if you
- care to be helpful.
-
- 4. Nobody ever bought a Mac to get MS Word or Excel! Lotus
- is much better as a spreadsheet, and PageMaker, Quark, Frame,
- and WriteNow are all better than Word (each in its own place).
- As long as Executor only supports the two fairly useless Mac
- products, it will never sell at any price. For all practical
- purposes, this product doesn't exist yet. Calm down. Cool
- it. Don't ask questions, just listen. Someday, if ARDI lasts
- despite its extremely foolish priorities, you'll hear that it
- can do something useful. I'll bet they could have found 500
- companies to each advance them $1,000 for the promise of 2
- copies of something that would run both Quark and Freehand.
- As it is, who cares?

-
- Dear Folks,
-
- Please reply directly to me for this letter. You should be able
- to cut my name away from the line that starts with "From:" and paste
- it into the "To:" field.
-
- One of the things we're working on right now is hammering out the
- bugs we are seeing when we run Word 5.0. We know of some bugs right
- now but since none of us here are Word users we may not be able to
- find bugs in some of the less obvious places (Word 5.0 has *so* much
- in it).
-
- We've had spotty luck with our beta testers in the past, some
- people were of great help, some people sent no comments whatsoever.
- For this reason I'd like this set of beta testing to be limited to
- people who have already bought our product. I'm assuming that a
- purchase makes it more likely that you're using the product. If you
- get in touch with me sometime today (Saturday), then I may be able to
- hand deliver you a copy at NeXTWORLD Expo, assuming you're going to
- be there. Otherwise you'll have to wait until we get back.
-
- Please keep sending me advice (although send it directly to me
- and not to this group). Some of it is useful, some is merely
- entertaining, but I'll read it all.

- Although irving has used strong language not to respond to the asked question, but to the
- company policy and mailing-list policy, he does have a very good point about this mailing
- list.

- Please direct your questions about ARDI and its policies to ARDI. If there are user-to-user
- issues, or summaries of important communications, please mail them to the list.
-
- I would also suggest that someone keep a file on nova/sonata.cc.purdue.edu and cs.orst.edu
- that describes the status of what programs run and what do not run. Getting messages "does x
- run?" is not very informative.
