  3. This README describes a 32-bit "seamless" video device driver for the S3**
  4. chip set.  A "seamless" capability allows you to run a Windows** program in
  5. a window on the Presentation Manager* (PM) desktop.
  6.  
  7. This display driver takes advantage of the hardware acceleration
  8. capabilities of the chip sets described in the S3 data books "86C801/86C805
  9. GUI Accelerators" and "86C928 GUI Accelerator."  It conforms to the OS/2*
  10. 32-bit flat memory model and is designed to function as a 32-bit PM display
  11. driver under the OS/2 32-bit graphics engine subsystem.

  13. THIS VIDEO DEVICE DRIVER IS DESIGNED TO BE USED WITH THE OS/2 2.1 PRODUCT
  14. AND IS GOVERNED BY THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF THE OS/2 PROGRAM LICENSE
  15. AGREEMENT.

  17. Supported Features
  18. ------------------
  19. The S3 display driver supports the following resolutions/colors and OS/2
  20. full-screen columns/rows:
  21.  
  22.      640 x  480 x 256 colors
  23.      800 x  600 x 256 colors
  24.     1024 x  768 x 256 colors
  25.     1280 x 1024 x 256 colors  (minimum of 2MB video memory required)
  26.  
  27.     OS/2 full screen 132,25
  28.     OS/2 full screen 132,43
  29.  
  30. It also supports the following features:
  31.  
  32. *   OS/2 PM Palette Manager
  33. *   Software Motion Video
  34. *   Static mode change
  35.  
  36.  
  37. S3 Display Driver Restrictions
  38. ------------------------------
  39. *   A minimum of 1MB video memory is required.
  40.  
  41. *   This display driver might not support ALL S3 adapters or systems with
  42.     EVERY chip set.
  43.  
  44.     The S3 display driver has been tested on and supports the following S3
  45.     adapters or systems with the chip set indicated in parentheses:

  64. Installation Instructions
  65. -------------------------
  66. NOTE:  Do NOT install this OS/2 2.1 display driver on earlier versions of
  67.        OS/2.
  68.  
  69.        The OS/2 ATTRIB command is used during installation.  If you elected
  70.        not to install the OS/2 System Utilities or you have deleted the
  71.        ATTRIB command you must use Selective Install to restore it before
  72.        continuing.
  73.  
  74. To install the S3 display driver:
  75.  
  76. 1.  Place this diskette into drive A (or any other diskette drive).
  77.  
  78. 2.  Open an OS/2 full-screen or window session.
  79.  
  80. 3.  At the OS/2 command prompt, enter the following command:
  81.  
  82.             A:S3INST A: C:
  83.  
  84.     where:  A: is the diskette drive
  85.             C: is the startup drive (where OS/2 2.1 is installed)
  86.  
  87.     This command will copy all necessary files to the OS/2 drive.
  88.  
  89. 4.  Perform a shutdown and restart the system.
  90.  
  91. ======================================================================
  92. NOTE:  For PREINSTALLED systems only, omit steps 5 - 8 and perform the
  93.        following steps:
  94.  
  95.        a) Open the Preinstalled Essentials folder.
  96.        b) Open the Configurations Tools folder.
  97.        c) Open the Configure Preinstalled System object.
  98.        d) Change the display setting to SVGA mode.
  99.        e) Perform a shutdown and restart the system.
  100.        f) Open the OS/2 System folder.
  101.        g) Open the System Setup folder.
  102.        h) Open the System object. Select the desired screen
  103.           resolution on the Screen page of the System Settings
  104.           notebook, and then close the notebook.
  105.        i) Perform a shutdown and restart the system.
  106.  
  107. This completes the S3 driver installation for preinstalled systems.
  108. ======================================================================
  109.  
  110. 5.  Open an OS/2 full-screen or window session.
  111.  
  112. 6.  Run the Display Driver Installation (DSPINSTL) utility program.
  113.  
  114.     When the Display Driver Install window appears, S3 should be the
  115.     default choice.  (To confirm this default, check the Primary Display
  116.     check box and select OK.  This will display a pop-up window indicating
  117.     the choices for the Super Video Graphics Array.  S3 should be
  118.     highlighted.)
  119.  
  120.     Select OK.  You will be prompted to insert the source directory
  121.     (installation diskette).  Insert the diskette and select OK again.
  122.     After a moment, you will be asked to accept the preselected Install
  123.     Using Defaults option or to select the Install Using Display Adapter
  124.     Utility Program option.
  125.  
  126.     DSPINSTL determines the hardware configuration by creating the
  127.     SVGADATA.PMI file on the startup drive where the OS2 directory is
  128.     located.  If this file has not been created, the adapter will not be
  129.     supported.
  130.  
  131. 7.  When DSPINSTL has completed, open the OS/2 System folder, open the
  132.     System Setup folder, and then open the System object.  The Screen page
  133.     of the Settings notebook will list all the supported resolutions for
  134.     your configuration.  Select one and then close the notebook.
  135.  
  136. 8.  Perform a shutdown and restart the system.
  137.  
  138.  
  139. Restrictions
  140. ------------
  141. 1.  While using WordPerfect** for Windows 5.2 you might find that an
  142.     incorrect font is being selected.  If this occurs:
  143.  
  144.     a.  Quit WordPerfect.
  145.  
  146.     b.  Edit the \OS2\MDOS\WINOS2\WIN.INI file using the OS/2 System
  147.         Editor.
  148.  
  149.     c.  Locate the "ìfont┘" section in the file.
  150.  
  151.     d.  Change the entries:
  152.

  160.     e.  Save the file and open WordPerfect.

  162. 2.  A repaint problem may occur when running EXCEL** 4.0 for WINDOWS
  163.     seamlessly.  If this occurs change to full screen.
  164.  
  165. 3.  Do not select the 1280x1024x256 non-interlaced option with the Diamond
  166.     Stealth adapters.
  167.  
  168. 4.  Action bar pull-downs may be blacked out when multiple WIN-OS2 seamless
  169.     applications are launched in separate VDM sessions simultaneously.
  170.     Launch each application separately or simultaneously in the same VDM
  171.     session.
  172.

  174. New SETVGA Procedure
  175. --------------------
  176. Use the following procedure instead of the SETVGA command if it is
  177. necessary for you to return to VGA mode.  If your display is out of sync
  178. you can follow this procedure after starting OS/2 from the Installation
  179. Diskette and escaping to the command prompt.
  180.  
  181. Case 1: You installed OS/2 from diskettes
  182.  
  183. 1.  Be sure RSPDSPI.EXE is in the \OS2\INSTALL\ directory.  If it is, go to
  184.     step 2.  If it is not, insert Installation Diskette 8 and unpack
  185.     RSPDSPI.EXE with the following command:
  186.  
  187.     C:\OS2\UNPACK A:\INSTAID C: /N:RSPDSPI.EXE
  188.  
  189.     where:  A: is the drive containing Installation Diskette 8
  190.             C: is the startup drive (where OS/2 2.1 is installed)
  191.  
  192. 2.  Enter the following commands:
  193.  
  194.     C:
  195.     CD C:\OS2\INSTALL
  196.     RSPDSPI /PK:VGA /SK:NONE /S:A:\ /T:C:
  197.  
  198.     where:  A: is the diskette drive you use to install OS/2
  199.             C: is the startup drive (where OS/2 2.1 is installed)

  202. Case 2: You installed OS/2 from CD-ROM or a LAN
  203.  
  204. 1.  Be sure RSPDSPI.EXE is in the \OS2\INSTALL\ directory.  If it is, go to
  205.     step 2.  If it is not, unpack RSPDSPI.EXE with the following command:
  206.  
  207.     C:\OS2\UNPACK E:\DISK_8\INSTAID C: /N:RSPDSPI.EXE
  208.  
  209.     where:  E: is the CD-ROM or LAN drive
  210.             C: is the startup drive (where OS/2 2.1 is installed)
  211.  
  212. 2.  Enter the following commands:
