                            "COMMON" BINGOS

The book,  THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO WINNING SCRABBLE, by Lawrence and Ozag gives
a list of  "The 100 Most Common  Bingos".  This began  me wondering how  they
derived that list.   So, I decided  to make up my own   list by,    how else,
computer simulation.

I wrote a simple little program to pick 7-letter racks "at random".  Starting
with the standard Scrabble pool of 100 letters (9 A's, 2 B's, etc.), I had 14
racks (=98 letters) chosen in each "game".  For each chosen rack, I found and
recorded every possible 7-letter bingo.   I automated the process so that the
computer chose the racks and saved all bingos to a file.  I then set it up to
repeat the process 11,000 times, for a total of 154,000 racks,  a pretty good
representative sample I   think,  and went to   bed  while the  computer  ran
overnight. It took about 7 hours to run the 154,000 racks on my 486DX2-66.

The list below gives all  7-letter  bingos that occurred at least three times
in the 154,000 racks.     The number in front of each word is, of course, the
number of occurrences. Here then is my list of "common bingos".

Note that this list does *not*  accurately reflect common bingos occurring in
actual play. In the "real  world",  every halfway decent player will "manage"
his or her  rack,   holding  back   BLANKS, S's,  building block prefixes and
suffixes (such ER and  ING), and aiming   for  reasonable rack balance.  This
actually skews the odds toward bingos by  a factor   of  3 or 4!  My computer
simulation found a  bingo about  every 30   racks,  whereas good players will
bingo much more frequently than that.      The  list  below is therefore more
typical of the most common bingos  played  early in the  game,  before   rack
management becomes much of a factor and the   player's  rack is  more  nearly
"random".
