- PROGRAM DOCUMENTATION
-
-
- 1 INTRODUCTION
-
- 1.1 Program Purpose
-
- The name of this program indicates its purpose. It is designed
- to facilitate the entering, balancing, and listing of assets and
- debts in a divorce settlement. The program was developed with
- the assistance of an attorney who specializes in divorce cases.
- The program is capable of producing three reports. The first
- report is a plain listing of the items to be used by the client
- and attorney. The second report is designed to be used in court
- presentations. And the third report is a single page summary of
- all information concerning the client, the spouse, and the
- judicial.
-
- 1.2 Demonstration Version
-
- A demonstration version of the program is readily available cost
- free. More likely than not, the version you are using is a
- demonstraction version. This program has full capabilities, with
- the exceptions that reports can not be printed out to a printer
- (only to the disk or screen) and the name of your company or law
- firm and the client's attorney will not appear on the reports.
-
- If you find the program useful, a fully functional version can
- be ordered by use of the Order Form on page 31. Information on
- the program and how to order it can be obtained by calling BVB
- Software at (209) 584-6447.
-
- 1.3 Fully Functional Version
-
- The fully functional version will be prepared for you by BVB
- Software. It will contain all information about your firm and
- the one person who is assigned to the divorse case. With this
- information, the reports will contain all information necessary
- to make them usable. Also available is a "Site License" which
- will allow your company to change the name of the person
- representing the client.
-
- 1.4 Terminology/Convention
-
- The letters "SI" will be used as an acronym for Split-It.
-
- Throughout this documentation the following conventions and
- terminology will be used:
-
-
-
-
- 1
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- <Enter> . . . Represents a key on the keyboard, in this
- case, the Enter key. This is sometimes
- called the <Return> key.
- 'Text' . . . Represents letters to be typed in and
- entered on the keyboard.
- "Text" . . . Represents a word precisely as shown
- between the double quotes.
- [Files] . . . Represents a selection in one of the many
- menus.
-
-
- 1.5 Printing the SI Documentation
-
- To print the documentation for the program, first make sure that
- the file named "SI.DOC" is on the floppy disk or hard disk
- directory which you are currently logged onto, also make sure
- that your printer is on. Type 'COPY SI.DOC PRN'.
-
-
- 2 QUICK START (AN OVERVIEW)
-
- 2.1 Starting the Program
-
- Installation of the program is very simple. If you are using a
- "floppy" only, no installation is necessary. if you plan to use
- "SI" on a hard disk, you must first install the program. Details
- of Software installation is contained in the Section entitled
- INSTALLATION, on page 29.
-
- Place the disk in the A: (or B:) drive, or it you have a Hard
- disk, change directories to where the "SI" program is located.
- Type in and enter 'SI'. After the entry Logo shows, the Main
- Menu will be shown (on the bottom of the screen), with the
- selection bar placed on the [Files] selection.
-
- You may also start the program with the name of the client file
- you wish to work with. This will load the client information
- and place you in the Worksheet so you may work with the file.
- This will be discussed later, in the Advanced Usage Section.
-
- 2.2 Understanding the Menu
-
- 2.2.1 Program Menu Tree (Organization): The following "tree"
- is a graphical representation of the various functions
- (commands) available within the program. Each of the commands
- will be explained in more detail in the Reference Section
- starting on page 18.

- the program is started. The top line is the Menu Bar, and it
- will give instructions on how to use the menu. On the Main
- Menu, the bar (first line) indicates how to activate commands
- on the Command Menu. In the above example, the [Files] command
- is selected. This and all other commands on the second line
- above, are options on the Main Menu. The third line shows
-

-
- sub-commands. For example, the Files command has five
- sub-commands (Load, Save, Create, Information, and
- Management).
-
- To select (execute) a menu command you can either:
-
- 1. Highlight the command by moving the left or right cursor
- arrow (on the cursor pad), and then hitting <Return>, or
- 2. Hitting the first letter of the command you wish to
- select.
-
- On subordinate menus the Menu Bar will contain instructions on
- how to retreat from the current Command. The <Esc> key is
- used to backtrack to the Main Menu from anywhere in the
- program.
-
- 2.3 The Communications Line
-
- This line is immediately above the Menu Line and below the
- Worksheet area (see below), and it is generally blank. Important
- directions and hints will be displayed here. This line will
- also be used to prompt you for user input, such as
- "Quit program <Y>es or <N>o?".

-
- 2.4.2 Worksheet Items: Each item contains two lines of data
- and is separated with single horizontal lines. Specific
- information to be entered for each item is as follows;
-
- -------------Top Line of Item-------------
- * Item number, generated by program,
- * Description of Item,
-
- -----------Second Line of Item------------
- * Total value of item,
- * Total debt, if any, against item,
- * Client's portion of value,
- * Client's portion of debt, if any,
- * Respondent's portion of value,
- * Respondent's portion of debt, if any.
-
- 2.4.3 Worksheet Status Line: The bottom of the Worksheet
- contains useful information about the status of the worksheet.
- On the left, the client file name appears, in the center, are
- instructions as to which keys to use to move around in the
- worksheet, and to the right is the net dollar "balance" of the
- sum of item values and debt for the entire worksheet. The
- "balance" gives you an immediate statement as to whether your
- client owes or is owed money. This will be useful in deciding
- how to assign values to the parties in the divorce.
-
- 2.4.4 Moving Around The Worksheet: While in the Worksheet
- Mode, each item occupies two lines, as explained above. The
- item currently selected is highlighted. Selection of items can
- be done by moving the selection bar (highlighting) to the item
- you wish to select. This can be done by using the cursor pad.
- The <up> and <down> arrows move the bar one item, while the
- <PgUp> and <PgDn> move the bar to the top or bottom of the
- page, and then to the next page. <Home> moves to Item 1, and
- <End> moves to the last item of the worksheet. Items can also
- be selected by description, item number, and item value (see
- Paragraph 3.4.2).
-
- 5
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- 2.5 Loading a File
-
- It is assumed that sample client files, supplied with the
- program disk, are on the disk or hard disk directory for a file
- to be loaded. If no file exists, you will have to create one,
- as instructed in Paragraph 2.9
-
- After the program is started, the [Files] command will be
- selected (highlighted) on the Menu Bar. Simply hit <Enter>, or
- hit <F> to select the Files option, this will bring up the Files
- Submenu, which is in turn positioned on [Load]. Again hit
- <Enter>.
-
- An alternate to this method is to hit <W> for Worksheet, and the
- program will then prompt you to:
- "<C>reate or <L>oad file. Hit <C> or <L>". Hit 'L' to load a
- file.
-
- A listing of all client files will now appear. Now position the
- selection bar (by using the cursor arrows) to the file you wish
- to select, hitting <Enter> when it is selected. This will
- retrieve the file and switch to the Worksheet Mode for working
- with the data.
-
- A client file can also be loaded from startup, by placing the
- client name on the "Command Line". See Program Startup on
- page 9.
-
- 2.6 Adding, Editing, and Deleting Items
-
- 2.6.1 Worksheet Mode: In the Worksheet Mode, the Menu
- selection is not in effect you instead have access to the
- items in the Worksheet. Once selected, you must exit the
- Worksheet Mode by hitting the <Esc> key, which will give you
- access to the Worksheet Menu (Add Item, Edit Item, Locate
- Item, Delete Item, Status Summary). Only Add Item, Edit Item
- and Delete Item are discussed below, The remainder of menu
- items will be explained in more detail in the Reference
- Section.
-
- 2.6.2 Adding Items: You must be in the Worksheet Mode to
- access [Add Items]. Hit <Esc> if in the Worksheet, or hit <W>
- and then <A> if on the Main Menu. This will place the cursor
- on a blank item line at the last line of the Worksheet. You
- may now enter in the data (described in Paragraph 3.4.1). The
- bottom line on the Worksheet frame, contains instructions on
- how to maneuver the cursor.
-
- 2.6.3 Editing Items: To edit items, you must first locate the
- item to be edited. This can be done by merely browsing, or by
- using the Locate command (see Paragraph 3.4.2). Once located,
-
- 6
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- hit <Esc> for the command menu and <E> for the Edit mode. The
- cursor will be within the item bar. Follow the instructions on
- the lower line of the Worksheet frame for instructions on
- editing (also refer to Paragraph 3.4.3).
-
- 2.6.4 Deleting Items: Items are deleted by first locating the
- desired item while in the Worksheet Mode, and then by hitting
- <Esc> and <D>. You will first be asked if you are sure. If
- so, hit <Y>. The screen will be re-displayed. Deletion of
- items is also discussed in Paragraph 3.4.4.
-
- 2.7 Writing Reports
-
- Once the Worksheet data is entered or edited correctly, then you
- may create one of three reports. These reports, serve different
- purposes. The first, called Listing Report, is to be used by
- the attorney and client as a simple listing for reference and as
- a working hardcopy (see Exhibit A). The second, called Judicial
- Report, is intended to be used for presentation in a legal
- setting (illustrated as Exhibit B). The third report is called
- the Information Report (Exhibit C) and is intended to be a
- summary on which all information related to the case is
- summarized. It would be useful to include this report with the
- Listing Report.
-
- To access these reports, locate on the Main Menu by hitting
- <Esc> until it appears, and then selecting [Reports] (either hit
- <R> or cursor over to highlight [Report] and then hit <Enter>).
-
- 2.8 Saving a Client Worksheet
-
- To save the file you are working on, you must be at the Main
- Menu from which you can select the [Files], followed by [Save]
- on the sub-menu. The file you are working on may also be saved
- when you "Quit" the program. When you select 'Q' from the Main
- Menu, you will be prompted if you want to save the active file.
- See paragraph 2.10 below. (refer to paragraph 3.5 for further
- information).
-
- 2.9 Creating Client Files
-
- 2.9.1 Methods: There are four ways to create a client file:
-
- 1) Select [File], from the Main Menu and [Create] from the
- File Menu,
-
- 2) If no file is active, select [Worksheet] from the Main
- Menu, and then select <C> for Create, or
-
- 3) Enter file name from the command line at start up
- i.e. 'SI NAME' where "NAME" is the name of the client file
- you wish to create.
-
- 7
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- 4) Copy one file name to another name. This can be used if
- you want to use existing information as a starting point.
-
- 2.9.2 Information Forms: Next, in any cases, you will be asked
- if you desire to fill out the Client Information Form and
- Spouse Information Form, since these forms must be filled out
- before printing Reports. You may, however, enter 'N' if you
- wish to fill them out later.
-
- 2.10 Quit
-
- This selection will terminate the session and exit the program.
- If there is a client file active, and you have not saved it, you
- will be asked if you want to save it. The default selection in
- <Y>, so if you do, hit 'Enter' otherwise, if you don't care
- about loosing the current worksheet information, hit 'N' to
- quit. If an file of the same name exists, a backup will be made
- of that file before it is overwritten.

- 3 ADVANCED USAGE
-
- 3.1 Program Startup
-
- The program is started by typing 'SI' at the DOS prompt. You
- should be located on the diskette or subdirectory in which the
- program file is located. At startup, you can specify the client
- file name after "SI". This will load the client file specified,
- and place you in the Worksheet Mode. If the file name does not
- exist, then the name will be ignored, and you will be asked if
- you wish to Load or Create a file. To specify the file name
- "CLIENT", type in 'SI CLIENT'.
-
- 3.2 The System Files
-
- The program is a single program entitled "SI.EXE". Typing in
- 'SI' will execute the program. Sample client worksheet files
- are provided to facilitate use of the program. They are named
- "CLONE.DTA" and "CLIENT.DTA". All data (client) files end with
- the extension ".DTA".
-
- "CLIENT" is a practice file which contains twelve typical items
- that might be found in a divorce settlement. Amounts are
- entered for the value and debt for each item. With this file
- you can practice modifying, the amounts to balance the net
- value. You can also easily practice printing the reports.
-
- "CLONE" is a data file with items that often are found in
- divorce settlements. The items have zeros entered for value and
- debt, so that you can use this a form for entering actual dollar
- amounts. Items that are not used can be deleted, and items not
- found can be added.
-
- Details of Software installation is contained in the Section
- entitled INSTALLATION, on page 29.
-
- 3.3 Create or Load Client File
-
- 3.3.1 Create: A client file can be created by selecting
- [File] on the Main Menu, and then [Create], or if no file is
- active, by the [Worksheet] selection which gives you the
- option of either Loading a file from the disk or Creating one.
- When you are prompted, hit 'C' for <C>reate. You must then
- give the file a name, fill out certain Information Forms, by
- add at least one item, and then save the file. The steps to be
- taken are:
-
- 1) You are first prompted to enter the file name. The
- default name shown will be "Noname". Use this name, if you
- like it (I would hope not). It is better to use a file name
- which is the same as your client, or at least similar to his
- name. If you wish to use a different name, merely type it in
-
- 9
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- - it will overwrite the default name. The name may not
- exceed 8 characters and may include only characters
- acceptable to those used by DOS for file names.
-
- 2) You will then be asked if you desire to fill out the
- Client Information Form and Spouse Information Form, since
- these forms must be filled out before printing Reports. You
- may, however, enter 'N' if you wish to fill them out later.
- Client and Spouse Information Forms are accessed by the
- [Files], [Information] selections. (see Paragraphs 3.9,
- 3.7).
-
- 3) Items are added to the file through the [Worksheet],
- [Add Item] selection (see Paragraph 3.4.1).
-
- 4) If a file is already active, this selection, will allow
- the user to erase the information currently in the
- computer's memory so that he can either [Load] another file,
- or create another file. This action will not erase the file
- from the disk, but only from the screen and the computer's
- memory.
-
- 3.3.2 Load: (Discussed in Paragraph 2.5) With this selection
- client files, if any, are displayed and the user may select a
- file and load it into memory for editing, printing, appending
- of items. If no files appear on the directory, then one must
- be created as discussed above.
-
- 1) This capability is accessed from the Main Menu by
- selecting [Files], [Load] (also by hitting the keys <F> and
- <L>). These are the default selections, therefore hitting
- <Enter> twice will display the list of files. These files
- are displayed alphabetically. Up to 36 files are displayed
- in the worksheet in two columns of 18 file each.
-
- 2) Selecting a file is done by positioning the selection bar
- over the client file name and hitting <Enter>. The cursor
- functions to position the bar as follows:
-
- <Home> - first file in directory
- <End> - last file in directory
- <Rt> - move to right column of files
- <Lft> - move to left column of files
- <Up> - move to previous file
- <Dwn> - move to next file
-
- 3.4 Using the Worksheet
-
- 3.4.1 Add Item: Items are added by first accessing the
- Worksheet Menu. Hit <W> and then <A> from the Main Menu, or if
- scanning items in the Worksheet Mode, hit <Esc> and then <A>.
- At this point an empty item data form will be created at the
-
- 10
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- end of the Worksheet, and the field for "Item Description"
- will be highlighted awaiting input. After this is entered, you
- must input the value of the item and then assign all or a part
- of it to either the Petitioner or Respondent. In the same way,
- the debt, if any, must be assigned. The following information
- applies to data entry:
-
- 1) The item name should be entered first.
-
- 2) The input bar is then positioned at the item's value.
- After entering the item's value (or debt), it is
- automatically placed under the Petitioner's (first) column.
- You then have one of three choices:
-
- a) assign to first column (hit <Enter>),
-
- b) move to next (Respondent's) column by use of either the
- up or down cursor key, or
-
- c) enter any portion of the amount (less than or equal to
- the value) by typing in the numeric amount and then
- hitting <Enter>.
-
- 3) If the values (or debts) are split up, the remainder is
- computed and assigned to the other party automatically. At
- any point, you may save all the information on the form by
- hitting the key combination <Ctrl>-<Enter>.
-
- 4) When you have completed entering information for an item,
- you will be placed into the next blank item form, ready to
- enter data for the next item. If you wish to discontinue
- entering information hit <Esc> and you will be returned to
- the Worksheet Menu.
-
- 3.4.2 Locate Item: With this selection you will be able to
- locate any item in the Worksheet by Description, Item Number,
- or Value Amount. To access this feature, hit <W> from the Main
- Menu, or <Esc>, <L> if browsing the Worksheet. A sub menu will
- be offered, in which you may select <N>umber, <D>escription,
- or <A>mount. Make the desired selection, and you will then be
- prompted for the value to be located. The description will
- locate any occurrence of the entered letters, regardless of
- case. If found, the item location will be highlighted, and
- you will be placed in the Worksheet Mode.
-
- 3.4.3 Edit Item: To edit an item, you must obviously locate
- the item. Either browse through the worksheet or Locate the
- Item (see above). Once the item is found, hit <Esc>, and then
- <E> to edit. The following steps then apply:
-
- 1) At this point you may select the field within the item
- bar by using the cursor pad. The lower line of the
-
- 11
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- worksheet frame contains instructions on which keys to use.
- Generally, Cursor Up moves one field backward and Cursor
- Down moves one field forward.
-
- 2) A field may be edited either by retyping the data, or by
- positioning the cursor the specific characters of a field
- and entering characters. Typing overwrites the data,
- however, hitting the <Ins> key will toggle to insert mode.
-
- 3.4.4 Delete Item: Deletion of an item is relatively simple.
- You must first locate the item while browsing in the Worksheet
- Mode or by Locating the item as described in paragraph 3.4.2
- above. To delete the item hit <Esc>, <D> if you are in the
- Worksheet Mode, or hit <D> if you had just located the item.
- You will be prompted to delete the item; hit <Y> to affirm the
- prompt, or <N> if you had accidentally hit <D>.
-
- 3.4.5 Summary Display: This selection on the Worksheet Menu
- calls up a submenu which allows a selection of either
- summarizes all items [All Items], or a summarizes all except
- the current selected item [Exclude Current Item]. The summary
- is displayed at the bottom of the Worksheet and is illustrated
- below:
-
- +============================================================+
- | SUMMARY OF VALUES AND DEBTS |
- | CLIENT'S Respondent's Totals |
- | ---------------------------------------------------------- |
- | Value Totals 525,000 482,000 1,007,000 |
- | Debt Totals (46,500) (3,500) (50,000)|
- | Net Totals 478,500 478,500 957,000 |
- | |
- | Values and debts are balanced |
- +=================== Hit any key to resume! =================+
-
- This summary should assist in understanding the relative
- values and whether your client owes or is due value. Hitting
- any key removes the display box and returns you to the
- worksheet.
-
- 1) All Items Summarized: This selection quickly summarizes
- all values and debts for both the respondent and petitioner.
- It all shows the totals for each party and a grand total.
-
- 2) Exclude Current Item: This selection does the same as for
- all items, but it excludes the currently highlighted item
- from the computations. This is a convenient way of checking
- what the effect of removing an item has on the overall
- worksheet's balance. If the results are to your liking, then
- delete the selected item. The summary will indicate that it
- is a summary which is excluding an item. For example, if
-
-
- 12
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- item number 2 were selected, the message would read "Petit.
- owes $6,000 with item 2 excluded".
-
- 3.4.6 Balancing the Worksheet: One of the most useful features
- of "SI" is the ability to quickly balance the dollar values
- and/or assignments to petitioner or respondent. This can be
- easily and quickly done in the edit mode of the worksheet. The
- effects of any change to an item's value, can be immendiately
- seen on the worksheet status line. A balanced worksheet will
- display "Balanced" on the right side of the worksheet. This
- will assist in knowing when and how much of an item or items
- need to be reassigned to Balance the Worksheet.
-
- Bottom Line of Worksheet
- +----------------------------------------------------------+
- | 5 Jewelry, Antiques, etc |
- | 35000 0 || 0 0 | 35000 0 |
- +CLIENT|----------------------------------|Resp. owes 5,000+
-
- 1) To reassign an item's value (or debt) to the other party,
- first locate the item, then enter the edit mode <Esc>,<E>,
- cursor down the the value (35000 above), and hit <Enter>.
- This will move the value to Petitioner's (first) column. If
- this is where you want it hit <Ctrl>-<Enter> otherwise hit
- the <Rt> arrow to move the Respondent. Hit <Ctrl>-<Enter> to
- assign. The right and left arrow move the amount to the
- other column.
-
- 2) To assign a portion to one or the other party, access the
- item as discussed above. Then, after hitting <Enter> (and
- <Rt> arrow to get Respondent's column) enter the portion of
- the item's value to be assigned to that party. For example,
- lyou may wish to assign 10000 of the 35000 to the
- respondent. Do this by going to the Respondent Column and
- entering 10000 over the 35000. The difference will be
- automatically assigned to the other party.
-
- 3.5 Save Client File:
-
- Once a client file has been created or modified, it must then
- be saved on disk if it is to be retained for future use. This
- is accessed by the [Files], [Save] selection. If you are not
- on the Main Menu, hit <Esc> until you are stationed there, and
- then hit <F>,<S>.
-
- 1) If the file already exists, it will be overwritten. This
- means that the previous data will be updated. A backup copy
- is made of the existing file before it is overwritten, in
- the event, you did not intend to overwrite it. The backup
- file has the extension ".BAK". See Paragraph 3.11 for added
- information.
-
-
- 13
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- 2) Once saved, you may return to the Worksheet Mode to
- continue modifying the items, you may go to the [Reports]
- selection to print reports.
-
- 3.6 File Management:
-
- 3.6.1 Erase File: If you wish to erase a file, you must first
- enter the [Files], [Management] sub-menu. from there, select
- [Erase]. You will be presented with a directory of the client
- files from which you may use the highlighted bar to select the
- name to erase. Use the cursor arrows to select the file (see
- Paragraph 2.5). When selected hit <Enter>, and you will be
- asked to confirm that you want to delete the file. The default
- selection is No. If you do want to delete, hit <Y> otherwise
- hit <N> or <Enter>.
-
- 3.6.2 Copy File: This selection allows you to create another
- file with identical data contained in it, but with a different
- file name. This is useful if you want to use an existing file
- as a template, or starting file, in which you can change, add,
- or delete data. The "Clone" file on the original system disk,
- is intended to be used in this fashion - it has zeros entered
- for all values. For Example, select the [Copy] option from
- the [Files], [Management] sub-menu. A directory of files will
- be shown; now position the bar on "CLONE" and hit <Enter>.
- Enter the new name when prompted. Now you have a new file to
- start entering data on.
-
- 3.6.3 Rename File: In order to rename a file, select [Files],
- [Management], and then [Rename]. This will display a
- directory of files from which you locate the file to rename.
- Position the selection bar on the file, and hit <Enter>. You
- will be prompted for the new name to be used. If the name
- already exists, you will not be able to use it. If you must
- use the new for the file name, the existing file must first be
- erased, (see above).
-
- 3.6.4 Directory: This selection is accessed by [Files],
- [Management] and [Directory]. This merely shows a listing of
- files, which you can scan visually. You may not do any
- modifications to any files.
-
- 3.7 Information:
-
- 3.7.1 Client: The client form allows for the input of data
- about your client. It is accessed from the [Files],
- [Information] sub-menu by selecting [Client]. This form will
- also has the name of the person representing the client.
- Refer to Exhibit C for illustrations of the form and the
- information to be furnished.
-
-
-
- 14
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- 1) If you have a Demo Version of "SI", the representative's
- name will be generic and not be accessable. The "Demo"
- message will appear, and you will have the opportunity to
- print an order form (by hitting <Alt>-<P>), or you can use
- the order form on page 31.
-
- 2) If you have obtained a working version, and a "Site
- License" you will be able to enter the attorney's name,
- otherwise, the name will be permanent. These selections are
- accessed by <C>, <S>, or <J> respectively.
-
- 3.7.2 Spouse: Information about the spouse, is entered on this
- form. It is accessed much the same as the client form, except
- that from the [Files], [Information] sub-menu, you select
- [Spouse]. Refer to Exhibit C for illustrations of the form and
- the information to be furnished.
-
- 3.7.3 Judicial Form: This form allows input of information
- concerning the court in which action is taken and about the
- case number. Refer to Exhibit C for illustrations of the form
- and the information to be furnished.
-
- 3.8 Producing Reports:
-
- 3.8.1 Print Report: This selection is found on the [Reports]
- submenu. From the Main Menu hit <R> and then <P>. It merely
- starts printing the selected report to printer, screen, or
- disk, depending on which device is selected below. You are
- prompted as to which report will be output to which device.
- The default setting for Report Type is the Listing report, and
- the print device is screen. These can be changed as described
- below.
-
- 3.8.2 Print Device: This selection allows you to select the
- device to output a report to. To invoke the command from the
- Main Menu, hit <R>, <D>. The output options are then presented
- on the menu line. You should hit <P>, <D> or <S>, depending
- on your preference. Each selection is discussed below:
-
- 1) Printer: This is the default output device for the fully
- functional version of Split_it. While you are working and
- adjusting, you should use the screen as an output. If you
- have the Demo version you will not be able to print directly
- to the printer, you will have to obtain the working version.
- Refer to the Order Form on page 31.
-
- 2) Screen: This selection sends output to the screen, and is
- the normally selected output device in the Demo version. In
- the fully functional version, the printer is the default
- selection. The screen can be selected from the [Report],
- [Device] menu. This is used to preview the report before
- actually printing to the printer.
-
- 15
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- 3) Disk: This option will probably not be used often. It
- produces an exact copy of the selected report onto the
- default disk (currently logged) as a DOS file (also known as
- ASCII format). This file can then be transmitted by modem
- and phone to others needing the information, or can be read
- into you word processor for "doctoring up". The reports are
- saved in disk files which have the same name as the client's
- file name, but the extensions are ".LRP", ".JRP" and ".IRP"
- for the Listing, Judicial, and Information reports
- respectively.
-
- 3.8.3 Type of Report: The type of report can be selected from
- the [Reports] submenu by hitting the <T> for [Type]. There
- are three types which are discussed below:
-
- 1) Listing: This is a simple listing presented in a format
- very similar to that appearing on the computer display. It
- is intended to be merely a report listing all the items
- along with their values so that the information can be
- reviewed and corrected. To get a complete detail of all
- possible information about the divorce action, the
- Information Sheet should be attached to the report.
-
- 2) Judicial: The judicial report is intended to be the
- "final Product" of this program. It should be used in
- presentations at judicial settlement hearings. It is in an
- acceptable form and contains appropriate affidavits to be
- considered legal. If it is not exactly acceptable for your
- use, you can print this report to the disk, and then load it
- into your word processor for enhancements and modifications.
-
- 3) Information Sheet: This is a single sheet report
- containing all information entered on the File Information
- Forms and Setup form. The information consists primarily of
- names, addressed, phone numbers and legal information about
- those involved in the legal action. Exhibit D and E
- illustrate this information.
-
- 3.9 Header:
-
- 3.9.1 Demo Version: This selection presents you with a form
- containing information about the lawfirm or company, if you
- have the "Demo" version the information will be generic and
- not applicable on printed reports. The Demo version displays a
- message which identifies it as such and gives you the option
- of printing out an order form by hitting <Alt>-<P>. A complete
- working version can be obtained from BVB Software by filling
- in the Order Form on page 31.
-
- 3.9.2 Working Version: If you have obtained the fully
- functional version of "Split_it", then the information will
-
- 16
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- contain the information you furnished upon ordering the
- program. This information will be necessary since it is used
- in creating some reports. Exhibit E illustrates the form and
- the information contained thereon.
-
- 3.10 Quit Program:
-
- This selection will terminate the session and exit the
- program. If there is a client file active, and you have not
- saved it, you will be questioned if you are sure you want to
- leave. If you want to save the file, do so first, and then
- Quit. Otherwise, if you don't care about loosing the current
- worksheet information, hit <Y> to quit.
-
- 3.11 Automatic Backup of Existing Files:
-
- 3.11.1 Backup Automatically Created: When a file is saved,
- whether it is when you quit, or when you save the file
- (through [Files], [Save]), the program backs up existing files
- with the same name, if one exists. This is in case you did
- not intend to lose the original file. You will be prompted
- that the backup file was created. The file will be renamed
- using the client's name (up to first 8 characters) and adding
- the extension ".BAK". For example "CLIENT.DTA" is renamed to
- "CLIENT.BAK".
-
- 3.11.2 Retrieve Original File: To retrieve the file, you must
- exit the "SI" program and be at the DOS prompt. The idea is
- to use the DOS "RENAME" command to change the ".BAK" extension
- to ".DTA". You will need to change either the client file
- ("CLIENT.DAT") name or the name of the backed up file
- ("CLIENT.BAK"). This is necessary because the backup file will
- be renamed using the extension ".DTA", and two such files can
- not exist. To rename the backup, type in
- 'REN CLIENT.BAK CLIENT.DTA'.

- 5 TECHNICAL INFORMATION
-
- 5.1 Minimum Requirements
-
- Computer . . The minimum memory size is recommended at
- 256K. This allows room for the program and
- about 100 items.
- Disks . . . . The program may easily be run with a single
- floppy disk or with a hard disk.
-
- 5.2 Files Used
-
- The Split_It "SI" system consists of the following types of
- files:
-
- Program . . . This file is the program file and it is
- named "SI.EXE". There are two versions of
- the program, one is a Demo version and the
- other is a complete working version.
- Read me . . . The file entitled "README.SI" contains a
- brief description of the files contained on
- the disk, and how to print the documenation
- manual.
- Print Doc . . This is a batch file which when executed
- will print the documentation.
- Client files These files are created by the user. The
- name (8 characters) is user created, but
- the extension is always ".DTA"
- Report files These files are generated by the program
- when reports are output to the disk. They
- have the same name as the client files, but
- end in an extension that indicates the
- report type. ".LRP", ",JRP", and ".IRP" for
- Listing, Judicial and Information reports
- respectively.
-
- 5.3 Programming Language Used
-
- The programming language used to develop the program Turbo
- Pascal Version 4. The source listing and files are available
- from BVB Software for a fee of $100.
-
- 5.4 Monitor and Printer
-
- Screen . . . The screen may be a monochrome or a color
- screen. The program automatically selects
- the appropriate video driver. The program
- works in the text mode only (no graphics
- are involved).
- Printer . . . Any printer will work with this program. It
- must be a parallel type hooked to the LPT1
- port. The reports are designed to use only
-
- 28
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- the IBM character set. No special effect,
- such as italics, underline, or boldface,
- are used.
-
-
- 5.5 Backup
-
- There is no automatic backup incorporated into the program.
- Therefore it is up to you to backup the files when you have
- invested sufficient time to warrant saving. Some suggestions
- are offered:
-
- 1) While working with a file, you should save the data at
- least each 10 minutes. Do this by hitting <Esc> until you
- are on the Main Menu, then hit [Files], [Save]; hit <Enter>
- for your client file name and then <Y> when asked if you
- want to overwrite the existing file.
-
- 2) To insure that all of your client files are backed up,
- you should include them into your routine backup procedures
- for all the other important files you have (you do back them
- up). Either using DOS "BACKUP" or a commercial program such
- as "FASTBACK". At a minimum back up you client files to a
- disk on the "B:" drive by doing the following: 1) place you
- backup disk in the "B:" drive, 2) log onto the drive that
- contains your client files i.e. "C:\SI", 3) type
- 'COPY *.DTA B:', 3) to save report files type 'COPY *.?RP
- B:'.
-
- 6 INSTALLATION
-
- 6.1 Hard Disk System
-
- It is suggested that you create a separate directory for the
- program and data files associated with the "SI" system. A
- knowledge of DOS command is helpful, but if you follow these
- instructions, you should have no trouble.
-
- From the "Root" directory (At the "C:>\" prompt) type in and
- enter 'MD SI'. This will create a separate Subdirectory into
- which you will now copy the program and data files.
-
- Move into the "SI" subdirectory by typing 'CD SI'. You are now
- into the "SI" subdirectory and all copy instructions will
- target this directory.
-
- Place the program disk into the "A:" disk drive and type in
- and enter 'COPY A:*.*'. If you are not located in the "SI"
- subdirectory, a more general command will accomplish the same
- copy instruction: 'COPY A:*.* C:\SI'. The following files
- should be copied onto the Hard Disk: "SI.EXE", "SI.DOC",
- "CLIENT.DTA", and "CLONE.DTA".
-
- 29
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- 6.2 Floppy Disk Operation
-
- With a floppy disk system the operation can be done with one
- or two disks described as follows:
-
- One disk . . The simplest is to keep the client files
- and program on the same disk. It can then
- be used on the "A:" or "B:" drive. You
- must be logged onto the drive that contains
- the disk.
- Two disk . . With this method, the client files will be
- on one disk drive and the program will be
- on the other. The currently logged drive
- should contain the client files. For
- example if on "B:>" then the client file
- disk should be in that drive. The program
- disk should be in the "A:" drive and is
- executed by typing 'A:SI'.
