- INTRODUCTION
-
- A file encryptor, as you may already know, is used to
- make your file unreadable or unusable. I had always wanted a
- program for encrypting my letters and journals so none of my
- overinquisitive friends and family could read them. I had
- used other shareware encryptors, but being a born hacker, I
- decided to write my own with the features I wanted.
-
- Super File Encryptor (SFE) has gone through many changes
- and has evolved into what you now have. The first three
- versions were distributed as Public Domain since very little
- work went into them. I have put many hours of work into this
- version and feel that I should charge a minimal fee. I know
- that money is tight these days. I never seem to have enough
- at any one time (I'm terrible when it comes to saving money).
- But, for those of you who can afford it, I recommend spending
- the small fee required by any author of a Shareware product.
- often, the time and effort spent in developing Shareware
- products is as great if not greater then developing
- commercial products. Authors of Shareware products feel that
- it is ludicrous to spend $200.00 on a word processor or
- $60.00 on an adventure game, which can be solved rather
- quickly, only to be put on a shelf and never opened again.
- This is the reason that I, as most Shareware authors, feel
- that Shareware is so important. You get quality products at
- very reasonable prices. The price you pay is usually just a
- registration fee and an incentive for the authors to write
- even better products because they feel that what they are
- doing is important to you and that you, as a user, care about
- the work and quality that goes into their product.
-
- HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS
-
- This software will run on an IBM PC/XT/AT or compatible. It
- has been tested on a Tandy 1000, a Tandy 1000 SX, a Tandy
- 1000 TX (a 286 machine), and a MITAC 386/16 Mhz. 128K of RAM
- as required. It will also run in either Monochrome or Color.
-
- SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS
-
- This software will run under DOS 2.0 or later versions.
-
-
- GETTING STARTED
-
- When you unarc, unzip, unpak, etc. SFE you should have
- the following files:
-
- SFE.EXE - Super File Encryptor executable.
- SFE.DOC - Super File Encryptor Documentation.
- FORM.DOC - Registration form.
- VIEW.EXE - user manual viewing program.
- README.BAT - Batch file to view user manual.
-
- I provided VIEW free with SFE. It can be used to view ascii
- files. It is not fully debugged and will crash if you try to
- view a very large file. It is adequate for viewing and
- printing this manual.
-
- To run SFE, just type SFE at your DOS prompt. For
- encrypting large files, a harddrive is highly recommended
- because it creates a temporary file while encrypting. If you
- are using a floppy drive, make sure that the free space
- is at least the size of the file you want to encrypt.
-
- There are five levels of encryption. Level 1, the least
- complex and the fastest, is recommended for most of the files
- you want to encrypt; level 1 is the default. Levels 2-5 are
- much slower and more complex providing greater protection.
-
- To encrypt a file, just choose the "Encrypt a File"
- option on the main menu. All you need to do is type in a
- file name, a password (up to 20 characters), and SFE goes to
- work. A file name can be a wild card (explained later), or
- just a file name with or without a drive letter in front of
- it. For example, you could either type TEST.DOC, or
- A:TEST.DOC. While encrypting, SFE displays the percentage
- encrypted, the file size of the file being encrypted, and the
- level of encryption. When it is done encrypting, it will
- erase the original file by writing a bunch of zeroes over the
- file. This prevents unwanted hackers from using a sector
- editor (a way of looking at the contents of your disk) to see
- your original document.
-
- If you want to change the level of encryption, just
- choose the "Encryption Level" option, move the highlighted
- bar with your up and down arrow keys, and press enter. You
- only need to choose a level when encrypting. When
- decrypting, SFE automatically detects what level you used to
- encrypt the file with. SFE can't, however, tell you that you
- have provided the wrong password; you must remember what
- password you used.
-
- Decrypting a file is similar to encrypting, just
- remember your password. If you choose to decrypt a file that
- is not encrypted, you need not worry, SFE will not decrypt
- it.
-
- Selecting files is a nice feature. A screen appears
- that displays the files of the directory you are in. To
- move through the files use your up and down arrow keys. To
- highlight or unhighlight a file, use the SPACEBAR; this will
- place or remove an asterisk next to the file. You can
- highlight as many as you want. When you are done, and have
- chosen at least one file, you can proceed to encrypt them by
- providing one password that each will share.
-
- Using wild cards is also permitted. When you choose to
- encrypt or decrypt a file without using the select option,
- you may provide, at the file name prompt, a wild card file
- name. For example: You want to encrypt all your .DOC files
- in the current directory. All you need to do is to specify
- *.DOC, and SFE will encrypt all your .DOC files with a common
- password.
-
- The help facility gives a brief summary of all the
- options. To view an option, just press the corresponding
- letter and a window will appear with information about that
- option.
-
- SUGGESTIONS
-
- For extra security you can encrypt the file more than
- once. You just have to remember in what order you put the
- passwords.
-
- FUTURE ENHANCEMENTS
-
- I am planing to have directory control. You'll be able
- to move through the directories via a directory tree display.
- I also want to include Multi-level encryption so instead of
- having to encrypt the file so many times, all you need to do
- is to provide a number of passwords which will create a
- common seed, or key, for encrypting.
-
- TECHNICAL INFORMATION
-
- I wrote SFE using Turbo Pascal Version 4.0, Turbo
- Technojocks Toolbox, and TC Soft Toolbox on a Tandy 1000 SX.
- The system uses random encryption routines. The random seed
- is created by a password of up to 20 characters. Since the
- seed is a longint, and turbo's random routine works with
- longints, you have a large number of possible seeds. Level 5
- encryption uses a bit manipulation routine which makes it
- much slower than the others (This really messes up a file).
-
- CLOSING
-
- If a bug should occur, please fill out the BUG SHEET.
- I try to thoroughly test my software before distributing it,
- but BUGS always seem to pop up unexpectedly. There is also a
- comment/idea sheet. This sheet is a small survey asking what
- type of system you have and other interesting questions.
- It also has a section for comments and ideas. Any comments
- or ideas you have, and want to express, I would appreciate
- hearing from you. A registration form is provided as well,
- and entitles you to free support and cheap updates.
