- ZIP.COM is a command processor that will make the diskette drives
- on an IBM PC work faster and more quietly.
-
- PC-DOS uses a diskette head settling time which is longer than it
- needs to be for the diskette drives used in a PC. It is designed
- that way because the drives used in a PCjr (and some other drives)
- require a long head settling time. When the diskette drive seeks
- from track to track, it must pause at each track for this time.
-
- ZIP.COM replaces the value for head settling time in a table in
- low storage. The table is called the DISK BASE. ZIP.COM should
- be executed only once, usually in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file, but
- alternatively by entering the command ZIP.
-
- After you enter the ZIP command, you will notice that your diskette
- drives make much less noise, and careful measurement will reveal
- that disk accesses are speeded up.
-
- I have tested ZIP.COM under DOS 2.1 and 1.1; it ought to work fine
- under other versions of DOS.
