- - WHAT IS SOCIAL ENGINEERING -
-
- Social Engineering is basically the manipulation of others to gain
- needed information/materials. When you kiss up to your boss before you ask for
- a raise, that is social engineering. If you buy your girlfriend a diamond ring
- before you take her to bed, that is social engineering. I'm going to tell you
- how social engineering can help you as a hacker and how to increase your skill
- at it.
-
- - BEFORE THE CALL -
-
- Social Engineering Information out of people in authority is not a
- spontaneous thing. It requires much planning. Of course, the amount of planning
- is relative to the knowledge of the person you wish to gain information from.
- The lower ranking the person, the more thick you can spread it on. For
- instance, if you were trying to get a password out of a McDonalds Manager, you
- could get away with almost anything. "Hi I'm the CLO from your Local MDMS, I'm
- checking on a possible CSV on your frame..." You get the picture. However, if
- you are dealing with someone who knows what they are talking about, you're
- going to have to be a bit more careful and make sure you know what you're
- talking about.
-
- It helps if you write out a script for yourself before you call, which
- includes the initial explanation, plus answers to some questions that you think
- may come up. This way you will be prepared for most anything and not sound like
- a little kid.
-
- Another thing you should have before you make the call is a callback
- number. This is essential in most cases, as some people are not very trusting
- with giving information out over the phone (and rightly so). Obviously, do not
- give them your home phone number. If you even think about doing that, stop
- reading this file and go play your Nintendo or something. Two solutions from
- this problem are:
- A) Use a Payphone. Not very good for several reasons. (See BACKGROUND NOISE)
- but it will work on the quite stupid.
-
- B) Use a loop. Very good, this works quite nicely in most cases.
-
- More on this Later.
-
- - MAKING THE CALL -
-
- Allright, you have your script and your callback number, and you're
- ready to begin. Call up whomever it is and start following your script.
-
- - AUTHORITY -
-
- People are stupid. Face it. They'll beleive anything if you sound like
- you know what you are talking about. Therefore when it comes to social
- engineering there are 3 things you need to remember:
-
- 1) YOU are the expert on the subject, not them. YOU know what you are talking
- about, they do not.
-
- 2) NEVER let them get ahead of you. Meaning: Do not let THEM start asking you
- the questsions. You ask all the questions.
-
- 3) Sound like you know what you are doing, even if you don't. If you trip over
- words and stutter they're going to know something is up. Speak clearly. Short
- and sweet.
-
- - BACKGROUND NOISE -
-
- A nice touch while Social Engineering is background noise. The required
- sounds are different, depending on who you are posing to be. If you are a
- lineman, you might want to go beige box off yourself. Then you get the nice
- outside noises (i.e. Birds, cars etc..) A Lineman would not have the sound of
- bacon frying in the background and your mother telling you the breakfast is
- ready. However, if you were a buisness executive of some sort, you would not
- want to call from outside. You may want to call from your computer, and turn
- your key clicks on, and type some garbage every once in a while. A fan in the
- background could help, and maybe even an occaisional opening and closing of
- file cabinets.
-
- - "CAN I HAVE A NUMBER TO CALL YOU BACK?" -
-
- If you are asked that question, don't panic! You've got your loop or
- payphone. Give him the number, hang up, and if you're using a loop, quickly
- call for it. When he answers, don't forget to say something like "Bob Marlson,
- Security Department, May I help you?" Then he should give you the needed
- information. Congratulations.
-
- - STAY CALM -
-
- The most important thing to remember when Engineering is DON'T PANIC.
- Always stay calm and stay on top of things. If the first person doesn't give
- you the information you need, hang up and try sommeone else. Don't give up just
- because one person gets wise to you.
-
- - SOCIAL ENGINEERING IDEAS -
-
- Here are some things you can try to test out your Social Engineering
- Skills.
-
- - Try and obtain someone's credit card number over the phone. Pretend you're a
- salesman or something.
-
- - Try to obtain the Password for McDonald's Computer on Telenet.
-
- - (A Bit Harder) Try to obtain someone's NUI over the telephone. Challenging.
-
- - (Your Idea Here)
-
- Theres so much you can do with Social Engineering, I won't even attempt
- to list it here. Be creative. Almost any information you need can be obtained
- if you're a good Social Engineer. Practice Makes Perfect.

- How to Crash an Emulex/2 BBS
-
-
- By: Anonymous Source
-
- A Kinda-Sorta Un-0fficial P/H/A Product
-
-
- This file will tell you, the reading public, how to crash an Emulex/2
- BBS which is operating with Net Mail for quite a while.
-
- 1)Get a virus or Trojan. Trojans work much better. The HDOPT Trojan
- is my favorite for the job. If you use HDOPT, rename HDOPT.EXE to
- DSZ.COM. Take your "DSZ.COM" and zip it in to an archive called "ZIN.1"
- "pkzip 1.ZIN DSZ.COM". Keep this ready.
-
- 2)Load up your comm program and dial your favorite Emulex Board. You should get
- the matrix Menu. [1],[2],[3],[4],[5]..
-
- 3)Type
- DARKRAD!1
- and it will reply
- [KRAD]
- so you have a little [KRAD] prompt.
-
- 4) Bang the keys, Hit all of them (Try to avoid ctrl-alt-del). I think the
- correct key-stroke has something to do with the letter "O". can't say for sure.
- Anyways, After not too long of a time, you will see a character or string of
- characters appear on the screen. In my case, it is usually "o". Now start
- uploading the 1.ZIN File. Once you are done, Hang up.
-
- 5) In about ten minutes, call back. Either you will connect and nothing will
- happen, or it will ring on and on, or it will seem to work fine. If it is the
- latter, Then repeat the Darkrad!1 Procedure. However, this time when it loads
- up "DSZ" it will actually be loading the Jerusalem Virus. You can draw your
- own conclusions as to what happens next.
-
- <%=-----------------------------------+--------------------------------------=%>
-
- Note- This file IS for information purposes only. Don't got out and
- crash all those k-rad Emulex/2 Boards! That wouldn't be nice, and who knows,
- might not even be legal.
-
- <%=-----------------------------------+--------------------------------------=%>
-
- Addition to Text: 06/14/90
-
- Since the Creation of this File, Sam Brown (Author of emulex) has
- released a new verision of Emulex with the option in Config to alter the
- DARKRAD!1 Password. This File will still work on BBSs running older versions,
- but on newer ones, you are going to have to hack out the password yourself.
- Good Luck.

- PROBERS: HACKING IS CRIME OF '90s
-
- By Rory J. O'Connor
- and Tom Schmitz
- Mercury News Staff Writers
-
- PHOENEX - Warning that the illegal use of computers is becoming "the
- white-collar crime of the 1990s," government investigators served notice
- Wednsday they are stepping up efforts to thwart people who use their machines
- as a liscence to steal.
-
- Secret Service agents joined the Arizona Attorney General and the U.S.
- attorney in Phoenex to release partial results of an 18-month investigation
- covering 15 cities, including San Jose.
-
- The agents displayed computers, telephone test equipment, and modems --
- part of a haul seized in raids across the country that included more than 40
- computers and 22,000 computer disks.
-
- Authorities said they expect data stored on the disks will show that
- "hackers" with personal computers are engaged in widespread trafficking in
- stolen credit cards and long-distance codes -- information that may have been
- used to defraud companies and individuals of millions of dollars in goods and
- services.
-
- "I can Safely say that this appears to be the largest (investigation)
- so far," said Tim Holtzen, assistant U.S. attorney for Arizona. "But this may
- well be the tip of the iceberg."
-
- The briefing was the government's first public discussion of "Operation
- Sundevil," a joint probe begun in 1988 by the Secret Service and the organized
- crime and racketeering division of the Arizona Attorney General's Office.
-
- SEARCH WARRANTS
-
- On Tuesday, 150 Secret Service agents used search warrants to conduct
- the seizures. The raids resulted in three arrests, but all were for offenses
- unrelated to the investigation, such as illegal possession of a firearm.
-
- While no charges have been filed in any of the cases, authorities said
- they suspect the hackers of breaking into numerous computer systems used banks,
- private corporations and government agencies. In one case, investigators said,
- a hacker managed to alter medical records at an Arizona Hospital.
-
- Officials declined to give any names of victims or estimate losses. But
- Stephen McNamee, the U.S. attorney for Arizona, said he knew of one case where
- the damage could total $1.7 million.
-
- S.J SEARCH
-
- In San Jose, police detectives assigned to the technology crime unit
- conducted a 6 a.m. search of a home in Almaden Valley. Investigators entered
- the room of an 18-year old San Jose State University student (Frank, aka Wind
- Walker), confiscating a computer system and 800 to 1,000 floppy disks stored
- in shoe boxes.
-
- While the student's name apeared Wednesday in several Bay Area media
- reports, the Mercury News generally does not identify people involved in
- police investigations unless they're charged with committing a crime. The
- student could not be reached for comment.
-
- Police said the student was not arrested. However, the disks and
- computer equipment were handed over to federal agents for shipment to
- Washington, where they will be examined to determine whether the teen-ager is
- involved in a fraud ring.
-
- Police said the student apparently operated a computer bulliten board,
- which is a computer program that allows users to exchange information over
- phone lines. He named his bulliten board the "Billionaire Boys Club." There is
- nothing illegal about operating a computer bulliten board unless it is used in
- connection with theft or fraud.
-
- The student told police the names of several people who helped operate
- the board, said Sgt. Dave Flory, the high-tech crime expert for the San Jose
- police.
-
- In addition to San Jose, cities in which search warrants were executed
- included Phoenix; Chicago; Cincinnati; Detroit; Los Angeles; Miami; Newark;
- N.J.; New York; Pittsburgh; San Diego; Richmond, Va.; and Plano, Texas.
-
- Those under investigation range in age from teen-agers to people in
- their Mid-40s, said Steve Purdy, who heads the fraud division of the Secret
- Service.
-
- The theft of credit card numbers and telephon access card numbers via
- computer has been practiced for years by technically savvy "phone phreaks," who
- swap the information through secret computer bulliten boards.
-
- Computer break-ins also have been accomplished by a small number of
- so-called hackers, usually teen-age boys who commit the crimes as a prank or an
- initiation rite to prove their skill.
-
- However, the investigators said Wednsday that such activity is shifting
- to older and more sophisticated hackers.
-
- "Our experience shows that many computer hacker suspects are no longer
- misguided teen-agers mischievously playing games with their computers in their
- bed-rooms," said Garry M. Jenkins, assistant director of the Secret Service.
-
- It is unclear how the hackers in various cities were connected, and
- authorities refused to discuss details of their relationships. But Robert K.
- Corbin, attorney general for Arizona, said most were motivated by the thrill
- of beating the system, rather than monetary gain.
-
- Gary Chapman, executive director of Computer Proffesionals for Social
- Responsibility, applauded the government's effor to send a strong message to
- computer criminals. But he said the investigators were overestimating both the
- scope of such illegal activity and the damage it has caused.
-
- "Compare computer hacking with the actions of Ivan Boesky or Michael
- Milken, and it sort of pales by comparison," Chapman said.
-
- Federal statutes make it a crime to tamper with so-called "federal-
- interest computers," which include those used by banks, and other financial
- institutions, government agencies, or two or more users in more than one state.
-
- In addition, the law prohibits trafficking in access devices such as
- credit card numbers and long-distance codes. Defendants convicted of
- unauthorized use of such devices can be sentanced up to 10 years in prison if
- they commit fraud of more than $1,000.
-
- -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
-
- STEALING CREDIT
- Here is how a thief steals bank credit card numbers and distributes
- them to colleagues with a desk-top computer and a telephon line:
-
- * The thief obtains a victim's credit card number by scourging trash
- for receipts, carbons, or other written records. The thief might also use a
- computer to break in to another computer system containing the information or
- trick an individual into revealing his or her card number.
-
- * The informatio is posted on a computer "Bulliten Board," Which can be
- operatd by any individual with a simple computer system and can be viewed by
- others with computers and a telephone access number.
-
- * Bulliten board callers buy, trade for or copy the stolen number,
- which they use to pay for goods or services.
-
- * The callers post the stolen numbers on other bulliten boards, and
- the numbers begin to show up all over the country. When the theft is discovered
- , they pass that information along the same chain of bulliten boards.

- TEEN HACKING THREAT DOWNPLAYED
- Parents must teach ethics, experts say
-
- By Rory J. O'Connor
- Mercury News Computing Editor
-
- In the wake of a nationwide sweep last week aimed at computer crime,
- parents must be wondering if that comuter in their kid's bedroom could be
- leading their teen-ager down the path to high-tech juvenile delinquency.
-
- Law Enforcement Officials involved in the investigation called computer
- crime the white-collar crime of the 1990s and alerted parents that their kids'
- fun with computers might have a dark side.
-
- But many programmers and other computer experts say that's an
- oversimplification that could cause parents undue concern.
-
- Most serious Computer crime is committed by adults out for personal
- profit who have access to corporate computers containing financial information
- or sensitive records, the experts say.
-
- By contrast, most teen-age computer enthusiasts will probably never
- trouble their parents with anything more dangerous that an unexpectedly large
- phone bill.
-
- Federal and Arizone law enforcement officials on Tuesday conducted
- searched in 13 cities, including San Jose, as part of their investigation into
- the use of computers to trade stolen cred-card numbers and long-distance
- telephone codes.
-
- "I think parents need to know that if their son or daughter has a
- computer, they may be involved in this," Arizona Attorney State General Robert
- K. Corbin said at a news conference Wednesday.
-
- But Gary Chapman, director of Computer Proffesionals for Social
- Responsibility in Palo Alto, cautioned: "Most kids who use computers don't
- engage in any criminal activity at all. At the fundamental level, if you put a
- gun or a car into the hands of a kid, maybe he manages to kill someone by
- mistake. It's pretty hard to imagine that being done by someone who's just been
- givin a computer."
-
- -ONE IN FIVE ARRESTED IS A TEEN-
-
- According to the National Center for Computer Crime Data in Santa Cruz,
- 20 percent of those arrested for computer crimes in 1988 were younger that 20,
- and about a quarter were students. Nearly half were in their 20s, and 26
- percent either worked in a computer-related occupation or had access to a
- computer at work. Indeed, 6 percent of the computer criminals in 1988 worked in
- Law Enforcement, down from the 28 percent in 1986, according to the center.
-
- The real issue isn't whether access to computers in the bedroom can
- turn kids into criminals, but the lack of responsible behavior by some parents,
- said Glenn Tenney, a San Mateo programmer and orginizer of the Hackers
- Conference, an annual gathering of Highly skilled programmers in Silicon
- Valley.
-
- Dealing with teen-age computer use is no different from dealing with
- teen-agers driving cars or having sex, Tenney maintains.
-
- EXPERT CAUTIONS PARENTS
-
- While Parents will make sure their teen-agers attend driver's education
- classes before taking their car out for a spin, he contends the same approach
- isn't always used with computers.
-
- "Some parents may not know right from wrong when it comes to
- computers," he said. "They may buy a computer to use at home and take a copy of
- the office software to use with it and not stop to think that it may be illegal
- or unethical."
-
- Parents whose teen-agers have turned to computer crim are almost always
- surprised when police arrive at their homes, armed with search warrants.
-
- Most are like the parents of Kevin Poulson, a 24-year old computr whiz
- who has been wanted since January by federal authorities on numerous charges
- involving computer and telephone fraud. For a year before Poulson's first brush
- with the law in 1983, his father had assumed that Poulson's long stints at the
- keybnoard were the harmless tinkerings of an ordinary boy.
-
- "He was on it many hours a day. He would stay up all night with it,"
- Lee Poulson said in January. "I didn't really know what he was up to until the
- law knocked on our door."
-
- KIDS NEED COMPUTERS
-
- While incidents like this might make parents think twice about buying
- computers for their youngsters, law enforcement officials say the solution
- isn't keeping computers away from kids.
-
- Doing that, the say, would deprive budding users of the opportunity to
- learn skills they'll need to survive in the modern, high-tech adult world.
-
- Nor should they prevent interested youths in starting their own
- computer bulletin boards -- computer services that serve as informal
- information exchanges among computer users -- but that information could
- include stolen credit card and phone card numbers.
-
- Some computer experts like Chapman chastise the government for blowing
- the problem of illicit computer use by teens out of proportion.
-
- "Compare all the damage done by computer hacking with the fraud and
- abuse in the savings and loan industry," he said. "Computer hacking doesn't
- even come within a fraction of a percentage point of that. It's just the
- publicity and the attention the media pays to this or that kid playing with a
- computer in their bedroom who's supposed to be causing havoc."
-
- Law enforcement officials and computer experts agree, however, that
- parents should take notice if their teen-agers spend hours on end using a
- computer, especially if they also tie up the phone at the same time.
-
- INTEREST VS. OBSESSION
-
- While it could just spell out the computer-age equivalient of all-night
- phone calls to friends, it could also mean the beginnings of an obsession with
- computers that could be criminal -- and, in any case, is probably unhealthy.
-
- "If I had a 15-year old son who spent eight to 10 hours a day locked in
- his room with the computer on and the phone in use all the time, making
- hundreds of calls, I'd want to be aware of what's going on," Tenney said. "But
- it would be the same if my kid drove his car around all day until 2 a.m. or
- spent 10 hours playing Nintendo. Kids can go to excess on anything."
-
- If a teen does decide to contact a bulliten board, Arizona Assistant
- Attorney General Gail Thackeray recommends that parents log on themselves to
- see if it appears legitimate. Parents should also play a role in supervising
- bulliten boards operated by their children, she said, both to make sure they
- are above-board and to help children gaurd against the boards' illicit use by
- outsiders.
-
-
- WHAT TO WATCH FOR
-
- Here are some tips for parents who think their children might be up to
- no good with their home computers.
-
- * Parents should take notice if their teen-agers spend hours on end using
- computers, especially if they also tie up the phones at the same time.
-
- * If a teen decides to join a computer "bulliten board," officials recommend
- that parents log on themselves to see if it appears legitimate. Parents also
- should play a role at supervising a bulliten board operated by their child to
- make sure it is harmless and to help the child gaurd against it's illicit use
- by outsiders.
-
- * Be concerned if a computer "is cranking away" when the child is at school
- or away from the house for an extended period. It might be scanning for modem
- numbers that could be used to locate corporate, university or government
- computers, which are frequent targets of illicit computer break-ins.
-
- * Look out for long lists of numbers, usually six, seven, or 14 digits each.
- Such numbers can sometimes be stolen long-distance calling codes or credit
- card numbers.
-
- * Be suspicious if you find a notebook of computer information that refers to
- such words as "phreakers," "phreaking" or "phraud" (often used to refer to
- telephone fraud); "carding," which can mean stealing credit card numbers;
- "trashing," which can refer to rummaging through trash cans looking for
- credit card vouchers; or "social engineering," meaning tricking innocent
- parties into revealing codes, passwords, or account numbers.
