  2. Welcome to the THC BBS H/P Files CD-ROM, formerly known as The Hackers
  3. enCyclopedia!

  5. Before you start looking around the directories on this CD-ROM, there are a
  6. few things you need to know:
  7.  
  8.  o  Some of the files on this CD describe illegal activities.  Whirlwind
  9.     Software does not encourage actually carrying out any illegal
  10.     activities.  The files on this CD are for informational and discussion
  11.     purposes only. If you choose (unwisely) to carry out any illegal acts,
  12.     Whirlwind Software will not be held responsible.
  13.  
  14.  o  Whirlwind Software does not hold a copyright on these files.
  15.  
  16.     I do have what is called a "compilation copyright" on the whole CD.
  17.  
  18.     You are allowed to redistribute most of the files on this CD
  19.     individually, but you are not allowed to make and sell copies of the
  20.     whole CD.  All FILES.BBS and FILES.HTM files are copyrighted by me, as
  21.     is the DOS browser.

  23.     In most cases, the files are in the public domain or are freely
  24.     redistributable.  That's right, you can put this CD up on a BBS, on a
  25.     Web site or even absorb it into some future CD of your own making -
  26.     although the latter would leave you competing with a great many people.

  28.     Of the remainder, they are either shareware (a form of copyrighted
  29.     material in which wide-open distribution is encouraged) or, in the case
  30.     of DPP, OCPP, Phrack Inc., and others - copyrighted and reprinted here
  31.     with permission.

  33.     Then there's the TAP digital archive - I had to think about that one
  34.     before I even began the project.  TAP was copyrighted, but who owns TAP
  35.     today, 14 years after it stopped publication?  Abbie Hoffman?  Richard
  36.     Cheshire?  The Blitzkrieg BBS?  For the answer, I turned to TAP's own
  37.     notice which said, "movement groups may reprint without permission with
  38.     TAP's address given with all credits."  I certainly hope after 11 years
  39.     of serving the H/P community, that THC qualifies as a movement group,
  40.     and certainly moreso than that guy in New Jersey who sells photocopies
  41.     of TAP for $100!  I think you know who he's helping.

  43.     I decided that in the spirit of spreading information that lets people
  44.     help themselves, that it was not my right to scan TAP and put it
  45.     online.  It was my *duty*.  I want to point out right here and now that
  46.     I am not selling TAP reprints; I am *giving* *them* *away*.  Everything
  47.     on this CD is also available for free from my BBS and will be for as
  48.     long as I can keep it running.  By making this CD and selling it to
  49.     you, I have saved you hundreds of dollars in long distance costs to
  50.     download everything - and isn't evading phone costs one of the things
  51.     TAP was about?

  53.     There are also about 40 files or so (not counting the indexes and this
  54.     file) which I, The Fixer, wrote myself over the years under various pen
  55.     names and handles.  In other words, I'm *not* a non-participating
  56.     spammer who's just jumped into this for a fast buck. This CD contains
  57.     everything Tommy's Holiday Camp BBS, has collected relating to Hacking
  58.     over the last 11 years.  Everything the users have uploaded, everything
  59.     I've written, everything the BBS has traded with other BBSes.

  61.  o  This CD is BBS ready to the extent that a FILES.BBS exists in each
  62.     directory.  There is also a master file list (ALLFILES.TXT) and a
  63.     directory index in the root directory of this CD. However, there's just
  64.     no way that I can include file area configuration files for every BBS
  65.     out there so I haven't included any.  The files I've given you should
  66.     be enough to derive a setup for nearly any decent BBS.

  68.  o  NEW for the '98 edition: If you are running MS-DOS (or an MS-DOS window
  69.     in Windows) you can optionally explore the CD with the BROWSE.EXE
  70.     program.  It will let you read the text files, view the pictures, and
  71.     will even offer to unzip ZIP, RAR and ARJ files to directories of their
  72.     own!

  74.  o  All of these files - and more - are available absolutely free on my
  75.     BBS.  Tommy's Holiday Camp is located in Victoria, B.C., Canada, and
  76.     its phone number is: (250) 361-4549.  Access is free and full at first
  77.     logon.  If you live in the United States, calling THC should cost about
  78.     the same as calling any other out-of-state BBS - I understand Sprint's
  79.     "Dime a Minute" rate includes calls to Canada.  Most of our LD plans
  80.     here in Canada are continent-wide.  If you live in Europe or Asia, you
  81.     will find that calling THC costs about the same as a call to the U.S.,
  82.     and in some cases actually less!  And if you live in Canada, well,
  83.     like, G'day, eh, how 'bout them Leafs.
