- Note that HOT repeats - if you get this one, take a guess; it won't hurt if
- you have to retry. Knowing exactly which one requires identifying the little
- Mech picture.
-
- There are six icons to command. The upper left gives you a menu to review
- your crew (only yourself at first) or the netnews (important). Here you make
- assignments for who pilots what. Another (forget which) puts you in the
- MechLube, or workshop, where you can repair, reload, review, or buy/sell Mechs.
- The lower left, if present, lets you visit the ruling house of the planet
- you're on, either for occasional tidbits of info or a contract. Always
- bargain before accepting a contract. Various houses have different
- tolerances - I don't have that info right now.
-
- The egg-shaped one is the jumpship, for travelling to other planets or to
- your contract. The bar is where you get hints from the barkeep, and can
- recruit new members when you're rich enough to buy a Mech for them. The
- last one is for saving games, etc.
-
- I've included one saved game, called RICHES, which starts you with something
- like 1.6 billion C-bills, more than more than more than enough to win with.
- Use it only if your conscience will let you, or frustration forces you.
-
- Piloting your Mech is the most important thing to learn right now...
-
- Forward speed you up, back slows you down or makes you walk backwards. The
- center key stops all movement. Left and right make you turn. You can see
- your current heading at the top; note that the radar in the middle does not
- rotate according to your heading, pressing T or R (I think) will switch it to
- a non-topo radar map which does rotate, showing enemy mechs as red.
-
- Hitting Enter targets a Mech - if there's one box, shoot at it; if there's
- two, that's one of your own. The linked weapons system is turned on and
- off by W - when it's one, all weapons with red boxes next to them
- will be cycled through each time you press Spacebar, and Tab will fire them
- all at once (which will definitely overheat you). Plus and minus can be
- used to manually select a weapon, and O will take that weapon off of the AWS,
- which is a good idea for missiles (SRM or LRM), which get blown up by your
- own lasers often.
-
- M and N raise and lower your sights. Z cycles through three states of
- zooming, but you can only fire at x1 view. < and > twist the torso of your
- Mech, while A aligns it back automatically. J activates the jump jets on
- smaller Mechs - use forward to thrust up and forward, and down to soften
- your landing. If you ever get knocked down, try holding down U until your
- Mech gets up (or fails and you lose).
-
- Esc gives you the option to bail out, surrendering, in effect. C gives you
- the command screen, where you tell your other crewmembers what to do - this
- is difficult to do because the action is still going on, and it's usually
- best to just give them good Mechs and let them act on their own. D shows
- your own damage. E shows the damage on the Mech currently targeted. Yellow
- is light, red is heavy damage, and black is destroyed.
-
- Defense missions are best - the enemy Mechs usually ignore you while charging
- their target. Rescue requires ramming the enemy base with your Mech.
- Destroying anything usually means firing at the base repeatedly. There are
- a few rare missions which involve trying to cross a certain line, or
- preventing the other Mechs from doing so.
-
- Have fun! You'll probably have more questions, so make them into a discussion
- on the Files board.
