  3. This is just a quick review of a couple novels now in bookstores that,
  4. well, if you're an avid DOOM fan, you gotta have them.  They are just
  5. nice collectibles but are also actually fun to read.  Brings life to 
  6. an already life-like game.  The following info is to help you find them
  7. and to give some basic info about them so you can decide whether you
  8. want to get them either to read or just add to your DOOM collection...
  9. or both.

  11. The two "DOOM" novels are in paperback and I found them in plentiful
  12. quantity at "B. Dalton BookSeller".  I am sure that "Barnes and Noble"
  13. and other well-known bookstores/booksellers will have them too.

  15. The books have the now very familiar cover artwork we find on the two
  16. versions of the game software packages.  (Not to mention the "DOOM"
  17. logo we all have doodled on a piece of scratch paper now and then).
  18. These books also have titles (besides the name "DOOM") that we have
  19. had dreams about (or more likely NIGHTMARES) which are "KNEE DEEP IN
  20. THE DEAD" and "HELL ON EARTH".  The books are Pocket Star Books
  21. published by POCKET BOOKS which is a division of Simon and Schuster, 
  22. Inc.  Both books are obviously based on the software games by id 
  23. Software.  The printing date on the books are both August 1995 so not
  24. only are these books just fresh from the press...  they are a tad
  25. early too!  The cover price is $4.99 each US.  The books are written
  26. by Dafydd ab Hugh and Brad Linaweaver.

  40. The cover states "Beyond the Game... The First Chapter in a Classic
  41. New Space Opera".  The sort of "preface" starts out with a very
  42. interesting intro that is quite good and grabs your attention.

  44. The first chapter starts out a little slow with the usual novel
  45. introduction to set the mood and the atmosphere.  Not that it isn't 
  46. well written, because it is...  but quite possibly it seemed slow 
  47. since I am so used to anything to do with DOOM is guaranteed excitement 
  48. from the word "go".  But the book didn't stay that way long.  I read
  49. a post somewhere on the internet about this book and someone compared
  50. KNEE DEEP IN THE DEAD to HELL ON EARTH that it was a novel a teenage
  51. science fiction nut would love where HELL ON EARTH is a little less
  52. adolescent.  I agree except that I don't agree you have to be a 
  53. teenager to enjoy this book.

  58. Space Opera".

  60. Again, the intro is to set the mood and atmosphere, but this time
  61. (since KNEE DEAD gets us started) it jumps right in and continues
  62. the battlescenes we are so familiar with.

  64. The next time you play the game...  may not be the same after
  65. reading HELL ON EARTH.

  71. everyone that would like to read it for themselves.
