- General Notes:
- ══════════════
-
- Well, I have to say this is my favourite sub simulator so far. The
- movie was great; the game is better than I expected (most movie games
- are total cop-outs). The game is actually a German U-Boat simulator
- with nothing to do with the movie/book except realism. (The book is
- included in the game, and you can buy the movie at a discount from the
- software company). Anyway, the time is 1942 and you can command one of
- three U-Boats with variable difficulty and realism levels. The graphics
- are well done and the interface is quite good (the lack of joystick
- control in areas such as anti-aircraft gun etc. is painfully evident
- though.)
-
- Intro:
- ══════
-
- Run Das Boot by changing typing Dasboot «┘
- An intro screen with music will appear. Hitting a key gets you to the
- main Das Boot menu. Choose Preferences right off and set everything you
- want. The selected item in a box is pressed in (which looks wierd).
- Choose digitized graphics and world if it is not already so, and choose
- Pivotal control for the gun turrets (or it is really wierd - up will
- life the gun up etc. Pivotal is more like pilot control and is much
- easier to use). Also select the message delay to two seconds; five is
- much too long. When you have finished fiddling, press <ESC> to get
- back to the main menu. Now, to start playing, choose ACTION. You can
- choose between training in the Baltic sea and missions. The training is
- like an arcade game shoot-em-up, but teaches you to use the single
- systems on your sub, ie. navigaton, anti-aircraft gun, deck gun,
- torpedos, both above and below water. Not all options (in fact very
- few) are available in this mode.
- Choosing Missions from the aforementioned menu allows you to select a
- submarine (They are listed with the worst at the top and the best at the
- bottom) and realisim and skill levels. You can now choose a mission
- scenario, and begin.
-
- MISSION PLAY:
- ═════════════
- Your screen in the game is divided in half with a horizontal line along
- the middle. Below it are icons to move you about different areas of
- your U-Boat, above it is the screen for the area you are in. The mouse
- will default to the lower area, should you wish to control the top area
- with the mouse (eg. navigation, waypoints, etc.) just hit the right
- button. Hitting it again will activate the mouse in the lower half of
- the screen. The keyboard controls (arrow keys etc.) will always work
- regardless of the selected mouse mode.
- Play is common sense. A list of keys follows, with which you can play
- the game. Good luck, Enjoy.
