  27.     Digital Equipment Corporation's DECserver family of Network Access
  28.                          Servers support IP, IPX, and AppleTalk over PPP,
  29.                          with   interoperability demonstrated with all the
  30.                          commonly available client   implementations for
  31.                          all three protocols. The DECserver family
  32.                          includes the DECserver 90M, 90TL, 700, and 900TM.
  33.                          The 90M and 90TL   are 8 asynch line servers,
  34.                          supporting speeds up 57.6 Kbps. The 700   comes in
  35.                          two models: an 8 asynch line version using DB25
  36.                          connectors   that support full modem control, and
  37.                          a 16 asynch line model. The 900   is a 32 asynch
  38.                          line server. The 700 and 900 class machines
  39.                          support   speeds up to 115.2 Kbps. All work well
  40.                          with any Hayes compatible   modem. All except the
  41.                          90TL have a FLASH RAM option, or can be loaded
  42.                          either via BOOTP or MOP.

  57.     The NetBlazer supports 24 async lines.  An individual line can be   run
  58.                          at 115.2Kbps.  A benchmark by LANQUEST showed the
  59.                          NetBlazer   could run PPP on 24 async lines at
  60.                          38.4Kbps.  I don't know of any   customers who run
  61.                          exclusively PPP on 24 lines, but I know of several
  62.                            that run mixtures of SLIP and PPP on 24 lines.

  68.                             server it doesn't fit the bill.  And a bit
  69.                          costly.

  94.     Current version has IPCP and PAP.   We don't have a sync PPP version
  95.                          yet, mostly because we don't support   sync serial
  96.                          yet.  That is scheduled for the R9.3 release,
  97.                          along with    ATCP, IPXCP and CHAP.

  99.     We have had async PPP since our R7.0 release in October 1992 for our
  100.                          Annex 3 and Micro Annex XL platforms.  PPP is not
  101.                          supported on the (now   obsolete) Annex 2 nor on
  102.                          the Micro Annex ELS.
  103.                          
  104.     The Annex 3 can be customer-upgraded from 8 to 64 async serial lines,
  105.                          with full modem controls on each line, and two to
  106.                          three i376 processors.   (The i376 is an embedded
  107.                          version of the 80386 which does not have an
  108.                          MMU.)  The motherboard has one i376 and each
  109.                          serial card (maximum two)   has one.  Packet
  110.                          routing and user-level functions are handled on
  111.                          the   motherboard, while framing and PPP/SLIP
  112.                          link-level processing are done   on the serial
  113.                          cards.

  115.     The Remote Annex has the same architecture, but with a TI486SLC2
  116.                          processor   instead of the 80376.  It's about
  117.                          twice the speed.

  122.     I have been *VERY* happy with my Xylogics terminal servers I have to
  123.                          Annex   II's and a Annex 3.  They were designed
  124.                          for the Unix type person, and take   2 mins to get
  125.                          working on the network.  Port configuration will
  126.                          take longer,   but normally you only have a few
  127.                          sets of configurations "modem dialin high   speed"
  128.                          etc.  Two thumbs up to this company, now if they
  129.                          didn't cost so   much. :) :)

  136.     I tested one of these, they come in 8-16 port configurations, a TCP or
  137.                          LAT or   TCP/LAT version.  Very VMS like, I would
  138.                          guess a off spring of DECservers.     Cheaper than
  139.                          the Xylogics in Price.  Didn't fit my feel due to
  140.                          the VMSish   help and commands.

  189. Note that sync PPP is rather well established and it's not surprising
  190. to see lots of vendors using it as their only sync serial line
  191. protocol.  Various folks do various of the configuration options,
  192. anywhere from a full implementation to very bare bones.

  194. The price point is arbitrary.  These are list prices for the cheapest
  195. box that has at least 1 sync PPP port that runs at 56 kb/sec plus one
  196. ethernet.  Prices approximate, your milage may vary, contact your
  197. vendor for details.

  278.   Self-Description        Software Forge Ltd (part of the Racal-Airtech
  279.                          group in the UK) have a sync. comms card for a PC
  280.                          that can run PPP and X.25 over leased line, PSTN
  281.                          dial-up and ISDN.  Standard interfaces are
  282.                          provided (Packet Driver and ODI).  These actually
  283.                          emulate an Ethernet interface, so a vast range of
  284.                          third-party protocol stacks (IP and IPX) can be
