Methadone is a synthetic narcotic used as a pain-killer more potent than morphine and less rapidly habit-forming.
Methadone is available in solutions, tablets, and injectables. Though the effects of the first dose last several hours, repeated doses may last up to a couple of days. Because of this long-lasting analgesic (pain relieving) action, it is used to reduce severe chronic pain in terminally ill cancer patients. Ironically, it is also used to treat heroin addicts.
