- The Tyrannosaurus was a carnivore
- that lived during the late
- Cretaceous era in what is now North
- America. The name means "King Tyrant
- Lizard."
- The largest land-dwelling
- meat-eater ever found, Tyrannosaurus
- measured 45 feet long, 18 feet high,
- and weighed up to 10000 pounds. Its
- head was five feet long and it could
- open its jaws four feet wide. Its
- mouth was lined with sharp, six-inch
- teeth. In fact, the Tyrannosaurus is
- classified as a member of the
- Deinodont family of dinosaurs.
- Deinodont means "Terrible teeth."
- Tyrannosaurus had sharp claws on
- its hind legs, presumably for
- rending its prey limb-from-limb. Its
- front legs had two puny, useless
- fingers on them and were too short
- even to reach its mouth.
- Tyrannosaurus fossils have been
- found in Montana and Wyoming.
- This great, slavering monster
- preyed on Triceratops (and probably
- anything else it could catch) and
- was one of the last of the great
- carnivores.^
