  1.   The Tyrannosaurus was a carnivore
  2. that lived during the late
  3. Cretaceous era in what is now North
  4. America. The name means "King Tyrant
  5. Lizard."
  6.   The largest land-dwelling
  7. meat-eater ever found, Tyrannosaurus
  8. measured 45 feet long, 18 feet high,
  9. and weighed up to 10000 pounds. Its
  10. head was five feet long and it could
  11. open its jaws four feet wide. Its
  12. mouth was lined with sharp, six-inch
  13. teeth. In fact, the Tyrannosaurus is
  14. classified as a member of the
  15. Deinodont family of dinosaurs.
  16. Deinodont means "Terrible teeth."
  17.   Tyrannosaurus had sharp claws on
  18. its hind legs, presumably for
  19. rending its prey limb-from-limb. Its
  20. front legs had two puny, useless
  21. fingers on them and were too short
  22. even to reach its mouth.
  23.   Tyrannosaurus fossils have been
  24. found in Montana and Wyoming.
  25.   This great, slavering monster
  26. preyed on Triceratops (and probably
  27. anything else it could catch) and
  28. was one of the last of the great
  29. carnivores.^
