- The Stegosaurus, whose name means
- "Armored Lizard" lived in the late
- Jurassic period, about 150 million
- years ago. Fossils of Stegosaurians
- ("Plated Dinosaurs") are relatively
- rare, indicating that it may not
- have been a very successful order.
- This herbivore was about twenty
- feet long and ten feet tall,
- weighing up to 8000 pounds. Its tiny
- head had about 25 teeth on each side
- and its brain was about the size of
- a walnut. The Stegosaurus (indeed,
- many dinosaurs) had a large ganglion
- in its hips which is believed to
- help control the hind legs and tail.
- The Stegosaur's hip ganglion was
- twenty times larger than its brain.
- The Stegosaurus had two rows of
- alternating triangular plates along
- its spine. Scientists long thought
- these were defensive structures, but
- recently uncovered evidence of
- vascularity in the plates suggests
- that they may have been cooling
- fins.
- Fossils of the Stegosaurus have
- been found in Colorado, Wyoming, and
- New Mexico.
- The Stegosaurians were the first
- large group of dinosaurs to become
- extinct.^
