  1.   The Stegosaurus, whose name means
  2. "Armored Lizard" lived in the late
  3. Jurassic period, about 150 million
  4. years ago. Fossils of Stegosaurians
  5. ("Plated Dinosaurs") are relatively
  6. rare, indicating that it may not
  7. have been a very successful order.
  8.   This herbivore was about twenty
  9. feet long and ten feet tall,
  10. weighing up to 8000 pounds. Its tiny
  11. head had about 25 teeth on each side
  12. and its brain was about the size of
  13. a walnut. The Stegosaurus (indeed,
  14. many dinosaurs) had a large ganglion
  15. in its hips which is believed to
  16. help control the hind legs and tail.
  17. The Stegosaur's hip ganglion was
  18. twenty times larger than its brain.
  19.   The Stegosaurus had two rows of
  20. alternating triangular plates along
  21. its spine. Scientists long thought
  22. these were defensive structures, but
  23. recently uncovered evidence of
  24. vascularity in the plates suggests
  25. that they may have been cooling
  26. fins.
  27.   Fossils of the Stegosaurus have
  28. been found in Colorado, Wyoming, and
  29. New Mexico.
  30.   The Stegosaurians were the first
  31. large group of dinosaurs to become
  32. extinct.^
