  1.               The Gray Tree Frog Address System

  3. INTRODUCTION
  4.  
  5. This program is intended to do only one thing - to allow you to store 
  6. names and addresses, plus other information about the people you know, 
  7. and to feed it back in the forms you need.
  8.  
  9. I wrote this program to fill a need I have had for years.  The fancy 
  10. address databases can cost plenty, and do more than I need or want to 
  11. pay for.  The simple ones don't do enough.  The Tree Frog Address System 
  12. is, as Goldilocks said, "just right" - for me.  Try it and see if it fits 
  13. your needs also.

  15. How to install:
  16.  
  17. 1.    Place MAIL.EXE and MAIL.INI in any directory of your chosing.
  18. 2.    You may move the other files into your WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory, IF you 
  19.       do not have NEWER versions already there, or you can leave them in the
  20.       same directory as the program.
  21. 3.    Create an icon in your Windows Program Manager by selecting
  22.         File
  23.         New
  24.         Program Item
  25.         
  26.         then fill in the blanks with the Description (MAIL),
  27.         the Command Line (MAIL.EXE),
  28.         and the directory where you put the program.
  29.         
  30.         you can follow MAIL.EXE with the path and name of
  31.         a data file (*.DAT) if you wish, otherwise the program
  32.         will create MAIL.DAT where you installed the program.
  33.         
  34. You must have VBRUN300.DLL in the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory or in the Mail
  35. program directory to run this program.
  36.  
  37. What it does:
  38.  
  39. 1.  Stores names, addresses, phone numbers in a flat file (which means 
  40. you can copy it into any word processor and play with it if you want, 
  41. and no need to worry about the data format becoming obsolete)
  42.  
  43. 2.  Allows you to search on ANY field at all, just by typing in part of 
  44. what you are looking for.
  45.  
  46. 3.  Allows you to scroll up and down and across the grid.
  47.  
  48. 4.  Dials the number of the selected person (home or work), and allows 
  49. you to drag and drop any field from the grid onto the dialhome or 
  50. dialwork buttons. 
  51.  
  52. 5.  Will copy the chosen person's info into the clipboard.
  53.  
  54. 6.  Allows you to use as many data files as you want.
  55.  
  56. 7.  Prints reports on all or selected records (use any field)
  57.  
  58. 8.  Creates comma-separated mail merge files which can be read into many 
  59. word processors - on all or selected records, home or office address.
  60.  
  61. 9.  Prints mailing labels (single row on dot matrix printers, triple row 
  62. on laser printers) for all or selected records, home or office address.
  63.  
  64. 10. Prints envelopes for the selected person - home or office address.
  65.  
  66. 11. As of 9/28/93, you can create separate icons for each data file you
  67. have, by including the name of the file as a parameter in the command line -
  68. (i.e.  C:\MAIL\MAIL.EXE MYFILE.DAT)
  69.  
  70. 12.  As of 11/17/93, the layout of the report is formatted better, and 
  71. there is now an ini file (MAIL.INI) so that the program can keep track of  
  72. your modem comm port, your return address, and your chosen screen colors.

  76. HOW TO WORK IT:
  77.  
  78. I have tried to make this as simple as possible.  One thing to remember 
  79. is that clicking on a field will clear all fields, UNLESS you have first 
  80. selected MODIFY! or ADD!.   Hitting ENTER will complete the action! - 
  81. Use TAB to move around.
  82.  
  83. To add a record, click on ADD!, and start typing.  Hit ENTER to save the 
  84. record.  The ADD! switch will remain on until you click CANCELADD!.
  85.  
  86. To find a record, start typing in any field.  The first record that 
  87. contains the letters you have typed (anywhere in the field) will move 
  88. to the top of the grid.  Hit ENTER to select that record.  
  89. Once you have selected a record, the focus moves to the 'NEXT' button.  
  90. Just keep hitting ENTER to see further matches.
  91.  
  92. You can also retrieve a record by clicking anywhere on the grid line.
  93. In that case, selecting NEXT MATCH will retrieve only further exact 
  94. matches.

  96. To print, remember that the envelope buttons will print the selected 
  97. name only.

  99. The reports and labels will include ALL records, unless you first choose 
  100. a field to match (click on the down arrow on the 'FIELDS' field on the 
  101. print screen) and then replace 'ALL' with the pattern to match.

  106. fuzzy feeling, you will also help me prove to my wife and the IRS that
  107. this computer is not just an excuse for all kinds of anti-social behavior.

  109. In addition, you will get the latest version of the program (it does tend 
  110. to change from time to time as I think of new tricks to try), with YOUR 
  111. OWN NAME ON THE SCREEN (instead of the obnoxious 'UNREGISTERED"), all on 
  112. a neat high density disk that you can use again.

  114. THE ENCLOSED PROGRAM IS A FULLY FUNCTIONAL PROGRAM!  I did not leave anything
  115. out to try to extort registration.  If you like it, use it.  If you really
  116. like it, and feel that it is worth it, please use REGISTER.DOC.
