- Introduction
-
- This program was designed to help you catalog and save your valuable
- recipes. Cataloging will help you find your recipes much faster. In
- addition the program may track the calories, cost, and a total of ten
- items for each food item. Make-A-Meal allows you to select the
- categories of items you want, and then creates a list of recipes from the
- categories selected. You may then select the exact dishes you wish to
- prepare. The program will ask you for the number of servings you want to
- use and list each recipe with recalculated quantities and measurements to
- the screen, your printer, or a text file of your choice. At the same
- time the program can calculate the number of calories per serving for
- each dish, the total cost per serving, and all the other items you have
- selected for each dish. If you are not interested in the calorie or any
- of the other features, you can remove them through the set up menu. If
- you find the program runs too slow for your taste, you can speed it up by
- removing some of the graphics programming. If you have a troublesome
- video card with a monochrome monitor, which does not want to display
- screens correctly, you can force the program into monochrome through the
- set up menu. There is no limit to the number of ingredients you use per
- recipe. There is no limit to the length of your instructions (except
- available ram memory). The program will calculate meals for up to
- 100,000 servings, so you will have enough even with company. The only
- mandatory field in the program is number of ingredients (what would a
- recipe be without at least one ingredient?). The program lets you choose
- whether you wish to enter quantities and see reports in fractions or
- decimals.
-
- General Program Use
-
- The menus use light bars. Move the arrows to your selection and press
- the enter key, or press the first letter of the menu selection. Look
- at the bottom of the screen for comments. F1 is the help key. Hot
- keys are listed in the help message, and in messages at the bottom of
- the screen. There are a series of files with the extension ".COM"
- these files are provided a tutorials to help you through potential
- rough spots you may encounter. Type the file name at the dos prompt or
- type menu to display these files.

- Recipe Program
-
- The recipe program allows three levels of classification. You may use
- none, 1, 2, or all 3 of these fields. How you use there fields depends
- on how detailed you wish to be and how many recipes you plan to save.
- You could use categories like Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner, or the basic
- 4 food groups. Then you could divide major classes into entrees, side
- dishes, appetizers, and desserts. Minor classes could be the key
- ingredient, or calorie level. The combinations are endless.
-
- Measurements are very important. If you are using either the cost or
- calorie databases to supply information, the measurement you use must be
- the same as in your cost and calorie files. The program does
- automatically convert recipe measurements into cups if you use 'liquid
- ounce', 'tablespoons', 'teaspoons', 'pints', 'quarts', or 'gallons'. The
- measurements may be abbreviated (list at the end of document).
-
- Number of ingredients is very important. If you had a recipe calling for
- 3 tablespoons of sugar, 2 cups of flour, 1 tablespoon of margarine, and
- 1/2 cup of sugar, you would have 4 ingredients. When you enter the
- number of ingredients, the program makes the exact number of ingredient
- files you have requested.
-

- Set Up Program
-
- The set up program is available to enhance your recipe system. The
- changes made will last only until you change them again. When changing
- monochrome, you must quit the program and restart for the change to take
- place.
-
- Nutritional: If you do not wish to track all the nutritional items
- available, you may turn them off and they will no longer
- appear as a data entry field, or on reports.
-
- Speed Up: If you are using floppy drives or a PC\XT (not
- turbo) to run this program. It will be slow. You
- may eliminate some of the fancy graphics and speed

- up the screen displays somewhat by using this
- feature.
-
-
- Monochrome: Some graphics displays used with monochrome or b & w
- monitors do not translate colors so you can read the
- program correctly. If you are having this problem
- you can force a monochrome display with this feature.
- (CorData PC-400 is a good example of poor translation.)
-
- Decimals: You may select whether you wish to use decimal places or
- fractions for recipe entry, and printing recipes. We find
- it easier to use decimals for faster data entry, and
- fractions for easier to read reports.
-
-
- Hot Keys
-
- Help Program - F1 - This program operates throughout
- the system giving you useful help
- messages.
- Note Pad - F4 - This is a small text editor. It
- is useful as a scratch pad to make
- notes to remember.
-
-
- Backup Requirements
-
-
- Backing up your files is always a good idea to prevent lose. This
- program produces everything it needs, except the information you have
- supplied to the databases. Anything ending in "dbf" or "dbt" should be
- backed up. As long as you have your original disk, the rest is not
- important.
-
- Additional Information
-
- Read the files ending with "COM" these files contain screen displays and
- walk you through various exercises. Just type the file name at the dos
- prompt or type menu the display these files. Type menu to activate the
- special file menu is even better.
-
-
- Your comments and suggests are requested to continue making this a better
- program.
