- CFX 2.3b - see CFX.doc for starting information.
- --------
- As Sonny Hammond would have said, "Orrr Geee Skip!" Well up until
- now CFX has been somewhat of a silly person (alright, program!) It appears
- that I have also been silly in forgetting about NTSC machines. Until now!
- Moments after posting version 2.3a, I received some Email on the Matrix
- echo from Mike West (way up there in the middle of God's own country.) Mike
- told me that CFX didn't work at all on his machine because it was an NTSC
- (Never The Same Colour) machine. That was at 01:30 this morning. It is
- now 02:30, and the problem is fixed (I hope!) CFX 2.3b now exclusively
- opens its own console (on both Wb and CLI) and uses this for its output.
- When CFX opens the console, it checks the Vertical Blanking Frequency of
- the machine running it, and opens up the proper sized console (PAL or
- NTSC.) The bad thing about this method is simple: you can't easily
- redirect CFX's output to a file or your printer. You WILL be able to do
- this with CFX 3.0 (plus MUCH more.) I must thank Mike for his generous
- assistance in helping me realise this major problem. This sort of thing
- earns you free-upgrades and registration to version 3.0. I will again
- thank Mike, Darius, Justin, Marcus and Poss who have helped so much. PS:
- Look out for the announcement of version 3.0: it won't be long now!

- CFX 2.3a - see CFX.doc for starting information.
- --------
- Well, well, well, I didn't actually get to to release version 2.2c
- as I couldn't log-on to A & C Land (the mongrel thing is always busy!)
- Never mind, this gave me time to really update the brain-file. I've added:
- 6 types of AMOS files;
- 3 more IFF types;
- 2 Mandelbrot filetypes (by Kevin Clague, thanks Kevin!);
- 4 Videoscape 3D filetypes;
- and 5 Pagestream filetypes.
-
- This version (2.3a) will be the last one of this program under this
- user environment. The next version, which may be shareware, I don't know
- yet, will be version 3.0a. This version already looks very good.
- Currently CFX knows over 120 filetypes. This number should grow, if
- support is given to me at some time or another (hint hint!)
- A special note on the reliability of CFX. I've programmed it so
- that it SHOULDN'T make mistakes, but with the HUGE number of 3rd-party
- filetypes and crunchers, I can't possibly ensure the COMPLETE ACCURACY of
- all of CFX's operations. That said, if you do find inconsistencies, the
- PLEASE inform me of the same. People who support me by either paying the
- initial shareware cost of approx $15 Aus (or 5 blanks disks), and by then
- sending me additional ideas of filetypes (or indeed actual filetypes,
- without breaching copyright notices) shall be granted a completely FREE
- major update/upgrade soon after. I really have spent a lot of time on this
- one guys, and I know how much a pain in the bee-hind paying for shareware
- is, but I hope that if you use this program, and would like to see version
- 3.0a, then please support the shareware premise.
- Additionally, the user-paid version of 3.0a (essentially the ONLY
- version of 3.0a to be released!) will be version-number encoded, along with
- the user's personal stats. I know how to do this VERY well, as I've seen a
- lot of this on the Amiga of late (cf. RESOURCE (tm)). Any leakings of
- this version will immediately be traced to the original user. Then the
- feds have some fun with you. Enough of this drivel: Please enjoy the last
- PD version of CFX!

- CFX 2.2c - see CFX.doc for starting information.
- --------
- Several new features added including GIF file recognition,
- "Podlipec" TMP GIF file format recognition, and Disk-MASHER archive
- recognition, in both standard and encrypted forms. I haven't been able to
- completely test all these additions FULLY, so please let me know if there
- is any problems with CFX when used on these formats. This also applies to
- all other formats as well, so keep your ears to the ground!
- I received some nice E-mail today on the Fido, from Darius
- Ignasiak, who likes CFX. Thanks Darius! He asked me whether CFX would get
- a recursive directory checker and further file recognition. Well, yes, I'm
- willing to do this if some nice people out there support me. This support
- can be in many ways: money, beer, blank disks etc... Be creative!
- If there are any people out there who know of new crunchers or
- filetypes which I do not support, then please let me know. It appears that
- a certain Mr. François (PowerPeak) has re-written his PowerPacker to
- version 3.0. This is good news indeed. The demo of this looks really
- good, so I expect everyone to support him (if you use his crunchers, that
- is!)
- If any Americans (or other Internationalists!) would like to
- contact me, you can get me on just about any major Fido echo around the
- world. I would really love to talk to international programmers.
- OK, time to go, but remember, if you like CFX, and would like to
- see it hit version 3.0, then please tell me about it. If I don't get any
- more support (from other than Poss, Marcus, Justin and Darius) then I can't
- see myself releasing 3.0. (Don't worry Darius, you'll get a copy!)

- CFX 2.2b - see CFX.doc for starting information.
- --------
- No major changes this time, except that certain users have
- requested that I release CFX without the executable itself being crunched.
- This I respect. So here is the un-crunched executable. I hope to be
- adding more IFF support in the future, as well as a few more obscure
- file-types. As yet I have received no feedback about the
- strengths/weaknesses of CFX. Are there no people using it? Will the
- uncrunched status of CFX lend itself to more users, and therefore more (if
- any) feedback?
- You can contact me on the FidoNet, Aus. Echo, as Bob Rye. Feel
- free to leave me a line (and criticisms if you've used CFX!)

- CFX 2.2a
- --------
- This time I have completely updated the (already) fast-code which
- checks the brain-file entries and I have added FULL WorkBench support. CFX
- 2.2a now checks for a WorkBench startup, and if so, it uses a customized
- console window, which offers quick access to a 'CLI-like' environment. The
- CLI-run CFX acts exactly like older versions (except that it's slightly
- quicker!) and all options are (at the moment) the same. The WorkBench CFX
- has a couple of different run-time conventions. Firstly, when CFX boots
- with the ARP-requester, the directory that it defaults to is the SYS:
- directory. Secondly, after the user terminates with 'CANCEL' from the
- requester, CFX 2.2a asks you to press the Left Mouse-button to completely
- close down the CFX environment. This gives the user enough time to
- properly peruse the contents of the console window.
- I didn't really check out how you would pass program/file names to
- CFX under the WorkBench. I don't use WorkBench, and I don't like
- WorkBench, but I thought that WorkBench support would be nice. I think
- that you might only be able to CFX at Workbench through the ARP-requester,
- but that isn't bad, in fact, it's better than having double-click passing,
- or tool-type passing of filenames. The ARP-requester allows the user to
- pinpoint a file very quickly. This approach is better than the standard WB
- approach.
-
- NOTE: CFX 2.2a is also re-entrant and pure, thus making it possible to make
- it RESIDENT, then watch it FLY!!
- -------------------------------------------------------------
-
- Some Note On The ARP File-Requester...
-
- Clicking the right mouse button (RMB) shows all
- units/drives/assignments available to the system.
- Clicking the LMB on a directory allows you to descend into a
- directory.
- Clicking the LMB on a filename, chooses that file, and places the
- filename in the filename string-gadget at the bottom of the
- requester.
- Pressing enter then acts upon the chosen filename.
- Double-Clicking a filename acts upon that filename.
- Entering a digit/letter in the filename string-gadget on the bottom
- of the requester sorts the listing of the filenames to
- start with that typed-in letter.
-
- There's probably more that this amazing file-requester can do, so
- let me know if you find any more!

- CFX 2.1b - see CFX.doc for starting information.
- --------
- Another message from Stephen (Sysop of A&C Land) Walsh admitting
- (!) that he doesn't use the standard Topaz80 font. He uses the IBM font,
- and my copyright signature in CFX appears as a silly upside-down-L-shaped
- thing. So therefore, the copyright signature has changed from © to (c).
- This looks different, but isn't detrimental to the operation of CFX.
- Another thing that Stephen didn't like was the auto-pal'ing of the CLI
- window. I did at first agree with Stephen about this not being necessary,
- but I've decided to allow it to remain. The auto-pal'ing operates on the
- CURRENT window, whether CLI or not. Without the auto-pal'ing, CFX's
- information is printed out very DICKY. I would rather have a large opened
- window, than have to turn my head side-ways to read the printout.
- Anyhow, it really depends on you, the end user. If you don't like
- the way CFX does something, then tell me. I'm willing to even have two
- versions of the program out at the same time. I could even make CFX look
- for a startup file, which will contain preferences etc.

-
- CFX 2.1a
- --------
- Ok, it has only been two days since the last update, but this one
- is definately called-for!! By popular demand, yes, that's Stephen Walsh by
- name, I have added most (?) of the popular Amiga file-archivers to the CFX
- brain-file. Included are ARC (AmigArc), Lharc, Lharca, Lhwarp and PK Amiga
- Zip. Not as difficult as I originally thought (sort of...)
- Also added is new recognition of the Noisetracker song files (they
- are exactly the same as the Soundtracker songs) and also that very weird
- (and wonderful??) sound program, Oktalyser. If you are a new user of CFX,
- then please read all of this document (and the CFX.doc) as they will allow
- you full use of CFX's functions!
- Again, I am seeking new file-types to add to CFX, which will keep
- it the best file-examiner on the Amiga. See the CFX.doc for details on
- contacting me, or just Netmail me on my local (and very supportive!) BBS =>
- A & C Land, Ballarat. NetMail address = (3:635/531) (I'm always floating
- around the FidoNet echo boards, as well!)
-
- I hope that you enjoy the program, and use it in good faith. I am
- always seeking criticisms etc. from anyone who cares....

- PS: How's the programming going, Richard?

-
- CFX 2.0h - see CFX.doc for starting information.
- --------
- A peculiar (but not unthought-of) bug in CFX 2.0b - CFX 2.0g which
- made CFX completely lose the plot when it wrote it's info to the
- menu-bar/title area of the CLI area. This was brought about by not
- thinking of other CLI environments' particular likes and dislikes.
- I have been developing CFX (and the other goodies) under the CSH
- x.xx (originally Matt Dillon's C-shell) and I ahve just realised how BAD
- CSH has become. It is good under certain circumstances, but it is VERY BAD
- under others. If you were running CFX 2.0(b-g) under CSH 3.0-4.1a then you
- might not have seen this bug, as CSH 'covers' the bug in its own inimitable
- way, by automatically rewriting the window's title bar if something has
- changed it. I have seen the light and changed working environments to
- Ashell 1.3 (you know, the one on the 1.3 Workbench???) Now, I can properly
- test (and develop) all types of programs for Amiga users. The window title
- bug has been fixed.
-
- Short log of changes from CFX 2.0g:
-
- CFX 2.0h:
- Window title bug GONE. Rewritten entire window routines...
-
- CFX 2.0h is now smaller, more compactly coded, and faster...
-
- Rewritten CLI parameter parsing...
-
- CFX 2.0h is now appears to be fully reentrant, and reexecutable.
- You'll have to get back to me on this one, if there's problems!
- I've tested this release under Wb 1.3 and Ashell.
- CFX 2.0h (release) is designed to run under the above environment,
- but I am sure (??) that it will work under others as well...
- The PURE bit is set on CFX 2.0h, so all you need to do is type:
- RESIDENT C:CFX
- Ados should think that it is alright. It really flies now...
- -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
- I am still waiting to hear from anyone who uses CFX (it IS the only file
- examiner!) So far I've had Email from one user who thinks that it is great.
- Thanks Justin!
