  4. The history of MED began, when I got DOC SoundTracker VI in 1989.
  5. I found that it was really easy to compose with it, but the program
  6. itself was terrible: No multitasking, no Kickstart 1.3, no way to
  7. exit (or was there??? there was no instructions), no keyboard
  8. equivalents...
  9. Later I got SoundTracker 2.4, NoiseTracker etc. but they still
  10. don't multitask...

  12. -- Version 1.00 (summer 1989) -------------------------------------------
  13. Then I began creating MED V1.00. It was never released.
  14. When it was finished in summer 1989, I immediately started to add
  15. bitmapped graphics etc.

  18. -- Version 1.11 (autumn 1989) -------------------------------------------
  19. In Autumn 1989 MED V1.11 completed. I gave it only to Erkki Hannila.
  20. I hope he hasn't spread it, because it contained few bugs...

  23. -- Version 1.12 (autumn 1989) -------------------------------------------
  24. I fixed these bugs in MED V1.12. This is the first released version.
  25. It contained some mysterious bugs that crashed the machine sometimes...
  26. I never found them, but they are probably gone now (maybe they were
  27. compiler bugs).

  30. -- Version 2.00 (8 Apr 1990) --------------------------------------------
  31. The version V2.00 was the second released version. When I started
  32. programming it, I thought it'll be V1.20. But finally the improvement-list
  33. grew so large that I decided it must be V2.00!! And here's the the list of
  34. the new features/fixes:
  35.    - Nearly completely rewritten code
  36.    - New player routine made in assembler
  37.    - Fast screen rendering routines also made in assembler
  38.    - New user interface with file requester
  39.    - MIDI support and up to 16 tracks
  40.    - Extended keyboard, lots of new keyboard equivalents
  41.    - Two equalizers (yes, imitating SoundTracker...)
  42.    - Insert/delete to playing sequence list
  43.    - Insert/delete blocks
  44.    - Cut/Copy/Paste rectangular regions
  45.    - Transposing and expanding/shrinking blocks
  46.    - SoundTracker module load support
  47.    - SoundTracker song saving
  48.    - Can write icon with song
  49.    - "MOD" save (song + samples)
  50.    - Writes object files for your own programs
  51.    - Song packing (not a real packer, but maybe "optimizing save routine")
  52.    - More octaves (5)
  53.    - Supports IFF 3- and 5-octave instruments
  54.    - New commands (filter on/off, note off, stop playing, repeat note)
  55.    - Repeat with beginning offset 0 works
  56.    - "Quick note" feature
  57.    - Insert effects when entering notes with Left or Right Alt
  58.    - An option to turn off automatic advancing to next line
  59.    - And maybe something else I've forgotten to put here...

  63. Not a long time from previous release!!! I found few bugs:
  64. In Finnish version, version 2.00 didn't save the song to correct directory.
  65. In both versions, the icon did not go to correct directory.
  66. These are now fixed. What a pity I sent Fred Fish V2.00 (yes, the letter
  67. was posted today...my luck!!).

  72.    - max. 63 samples
  73.    - block length is modifiable (1 - 256 lines)
  74.    - relative volumes for each channel and master volume

  76.    - new commands (3, 4, B, FFA, FFB, FFD)
  77.    - new MIDI commands (modulation wheel, pan, hold pedal)
  78.    - saves now Sound/NoiseTracker modules (ST-song save removed)
  79.    - programmable keys (Shift 0 - 9) can be edited/saved
  80.    - real-time sample display (updated every frame), looks nice
  81.    - new file format: module (MMD0)
  82.    - intelligent sample loader, minimizes disk swapping, doesn't
  83.      reload samples which are already in memory
  84.    - automatic slide making (+ volume fade)
  85.    - track numbers always displayed, can be scrolled one track at a
  86.      time
  87.    - free memory can be displayed
  88.    - screen outlook a bit better (more space for sample name),
  89.      many panels enhanced
  90.    - an option to read volumes when entering notes with MIDI
  91.    - each sample can be independently transposed (like play-transpose)
  92.    - it's possible to highlight lines (reversed colors) for easier
  93.      positioning of notes
  94.    - the player tries to flush "serial.device" if allocation failed
  95.    - delete option in file requester
  96.    - volumes (command C) can be hex or decimal
  97.    - blocks can be splitted or joined (thanks to modifiable size)
  98.    - filename paths can be added/removed when loading samples
  99.    - better compatibility mode for ST/NT
  100.    - detaches from CLI (uses cback.o)
  101.    - a bug in MIDI preset changing fixed
  102.    - small enhancements everywhere

  104. Also there's a new version of MEDPlayer, better instructions (I hope)
  105.  better playroutine, "medplayer.library", module loader.......

  109. This version contains two small fixes to the previous version:
  110.    - MED now doesn't insert entered MIDI notes with volume 0
  111.      (because it means "note off")
  112.    - a very, very small bug fixed (when loading MMD0-module, instrument
  113.      names were not always deleted)

  117.    - MED had a bug which affected command FFF with MIDI. It's now fixed.
  118.      The "modplayer.a" was correct, however. (strange...)
  119.    - There should be no files missing from the source archive any more
  120.      (due to a bug in Lharc or me).
