- ============================= LockDevice =============================
- ======================================================================
- A utility written by Olaf 'Olsen' Barthel of MXM. Copyright, © 1990
- by MXM. Shareware, all rights reserved. No guarantee of any kind is
- made that the program(s) described in this document are 100% reliable.
- You use this material on your own risk.
-
- ============================== Purpose ===============================
- ======================================================================
- If you have ever accidentally formatted your hard disk drive, you are
- probably searching for an equivalent to the small black write protect
- tab used by floppy disks. If locked, FastFileSystem rejects all write
- requests, but that still is not enough since you can still go directly
- to the device driver and ask to format a track. 'LockDevice' installs
- a patch at the device driver level to reject all icoming write and
- format requests thus reducing the chance of accidentally formatting
- the hereby protected data media.
-
- =============================== Usage ================================
- ======================================================================
- LockDevice can be called from Shell only. Note that arp.library is
- required to run the program.
-
- You'll get the following cli template:
-
- Drive,L=Lock/K,K=Key/K,S=Show/S,Info/S,Q=Quit/S
-
- Drive.. The name of the disk drive to be locked/unlocked
-
- Lock... This switch determines if the drive is going to be locked
- or unlocked. use 'Lock on' to lock a drive and 'Lock off'
- to unlock it.
-
- Key.... A optional password to be used as an access key to unlock
- a drive.
-
- Show... Show all currently locked drives.
-
- Quit... Remove all locked devices. Note that this command will break
- if there are any locked devices protected by passwords.
-
- ============================ Limitations =============================
- ======================================================================
- Since it is possible to create a number of partitions from a single
- device driver unit, it is possible that locking one device will also
- lock other partitions. 'LockDevice' will detect these situations and
- ask you whether it should continue or not. The 'Show' command will
- list all locked devices, but only those can be unlocked directly by
- 'LockDevice' which are displayed in colour three (i.e. orange).
