- FileLab V0.85
- by Chris Papademetrious
-
- FileLab is a program conceived in an angry bout
- of frustration. I was getting really upset at
- public domain '.doc files'. Why, you ask? Because
- some that I have encountered insisted on having weird
- margins, or tabs in all the wrong places, or those
- pesky page feeds which mysteriously clear the screen
- when the file is TYPE'd from the CLI. The margins were
- especially annoying, since I like to save space. But
- printing those doc files out at 15 characters/inch
- resulted only in a tiny column on the left of an almost
- totally blank sheet of paper!
-
- FileLab is my answer to these problems. Simply run the
- program, enter the name of the file to be read and the
- filename to write to, and it will go through, based on
- your preferences, and convert the file to a much more
- readable form. After the conversion process, the file
- is ready to be imported into a word processor such as
- WordPerfect for printing and modification.
-
- FileLab can be run from the CLI or Workbench. It does
- not look for extended-selection icons from the
- Workbench. Either way, when the program is run, the
- main window will open on the Workbench screen. It
- contains seven gadgets.
-
- The two filename gadgets are used to enter the
- filenames. Click in them to type the name of the file
- to be read and converted, or the filename to be written
- to. right-Amiga X will clear the field, and right-Amiga
- Q will undo any changes made after clicking in the
- selection field.
-
- The START and STOP gadgets are never active at the same
- time. The START gadget is used to begin conversion.
- When started, all gadgets become unselectable except
- for the STOP gadget. The STOP gadget will abort the
- conversion process and close the file. The output can
- then be read, but will not be completely converted.
-
- The three preferences gadgets (FORMAT, AUTOINDENT, and
- CTRL-L) are located on the rightmost edge of the
- window. When the FORMAT gadget is selected, all
- extra spaces and linefeeds are taken out. The only
- linefeeds left will be those where two or more blank
- lines lay in a row. This allows the stray linefeeds in
- the middle of paragraphs to be removed. The AUTOINDENT
- gadget removes TABS, and automatically indents the
- beginning of each paragraph to five spaces. The CTRL-L
- gadget will remove ALL pagefeeds (the clear-screen
- characters) by converting them into linefeeds.
-
- This program is NOT SHAREWARE. I doubt I would have
- much success at marketing it that way. HOWEVER, as a
- 'normal' teenager (we all program C, no?) I would
- greatly appreciate any contributions you could make.
- Extra memory and manuals are expensive, and Santa seems
- to prefer clothes anyway :-) ...
