- Lightning Dial! is a program that I wrote to help a friend win one of those
- radio call-in contests. The purpose of the program is to quickly dial a
- phone number and wait just long enough for you to hear if the phone is busy
- or if it rings. In the case that it is busy, the program will hang up and
- re-dial. If the phone rings, it is your responsibility to first pick up
- the reciever of the phone (you do have one don't you?) and then click on
- the HOLD gadget to stop the program from re-dialing. You can then talk to
- the person (the D.J.) on the other end and hopefully win the contest.
-
- At first the program was very simple and CLI based, but then I decided to
- spruce it up with a fancy window and some gadgets.
-
- The program now allows you to enter up to four different numbers into
- string gadgets. You can choose which one to dial by clicking in the box
- to the left of it. Dialing starts upon selecting the number. If you select
- a new number while another number is being dialed, that dialing will be
- aborted and the new one will begin.
-
- If you wish to abort the dialing, you can either click in the QUIT box
- (which also aborts the program) or click in the HOLD box.
-
- The time span from dialing the number and hanging up is changed by entering
- a value into the WAIT ~TICKS box. This represents the number of ticks
- that will pass before hangup (Fifty ticks is equal to one second).
-
- One thing which will help speed up the dialing process, is to modify your
- modem settings using standard AT commands (via a terminal program).
- Some modems allow you to change the speed at which a number is dialed. Set
- the modem so it dials as fast as the phone company will allow (one heck of
- a lot faster than you can dial with your fingers!), and do not turn the
- modem off before you run the program (as that would set the modem back to
- normal speed). Now you are ready to try it out. Have fun, and good luck.
