  7.         The Name-Game is based on a popular type of Skill Word Puzzle Contest
  8. generally sponsored by newspapers.
  9.  
  10. TANGLED NAME CONTESTS
  11.  
  12.         Tangled Names Contests, such as Tangle Towns, Tangle Comics, and Bible
  13. Names Game are among the most interesting and rewarding word puzzles that have
  14. been introduced to the American people.
  15.  
  16.         These contests, which have been sponsored by newspapers throughout the
  17. United States at least since the 1930's, have been used to increase circulation
  18. and gain public goodwill.
  19.  
  20.         The New York Herald Tribune, the Philadelphia Evening Bulletin, and the
  21. Los Angeles Times are among the newspapers that have held such contests.
  22.  
  23.         There are many reasons why Tangle Towns and similar contests are such
  24. appealing word games.  One is the large rewards:  the 1988 L. A. Times Grand 
  25. Prize was a $50,000 Mercedes Benz plus $25,000 cash!

  27.         I myself have competed in the L. A. Times contest four times.The L. A.
  28. Times sponsors this contest every 3 to 5 years.
  29.  
  30.         These contests are true "skill" contests.  There is no luck or chance
  31. involved.  Nobody, not even the originator of the contest, knows the best 
  32. solution to the final tie-breaker.
  33.  
  34. HOW NEWSPAPER TANGLE TOWN CONTESTS ARE RUN
  35.  
  36.         The object of Tangled Name contests is to make a list of names from 
  37. a set of letters and a source list.  The contest is generally divided into 
  38. three parts:
  39.  
  40.         1.  The preliminary set of puzzles which consists of approxi-
  41.             mately fifty individual puzzles, each of the same type 
  42.             and having a single solution for each.
  43.  
  44.         2.  The first set of tiebreakers which consists of approxi-
  45.             mately twenty puzzles similar to the original set.
  46.  
  47.         3.  The final tiebreaker which consists of a single puzzle
  48.             of a type which is different from the first two.  This
  49.             puzzle has no predetermined top solution- the solution
  50.             with the highest score wins the contest.
  51.  
  52.         The object of the final tiebreaker is to make a solution list using 
  53. the supplied letter alphabet and source list.  Points are awarded for each
  54. name on the source list.  Additional points are awarded for certain letter 
  55. combinations used within these words.  Penalty points are subtracted for each
  56. letter left over.  A Bonus is awarded in the event that the contestant is able
  57. to use up all the letters provided.

  59. THE NAME-GAME
  60.  
  61.         The Name-Game is a computerized version of the final tie-breaker.  The
  62. computer will keep track of your Source and Solution lists, the number of
  63. letters used and remaining, and keep a running score.
  64.  
  65.         The version of the game you have here is a playable version with
  66. several Source files that you may choose to play with.
  67.  
  68.         Additional features of the program allow you to print copies of your
  69. lists to paper and save your solutions to disk for recall later.
  70.  
  71.         Gladstone Productions is sponsoring contests using an enhanced contest
  72. version of the Name-Game.  For each contest, a new game disk will be issued
  73. with a new, and different Source File and puzzle alphabet.  The Contest Version
  74. has some additional features:
  75.  
  76.         1.  The ability to sort either a Solution List or a Source
  77.             List either alphabetically or numerically (highest-
  78.             scoring words go to the top of the list).
  79.  
  80.         2.  The ability to save a newly sorted file in its sorted
  81.             form.
  82.  
  83.         3.  A quick-search function that hi-lites a letter or letter
  84.             combination that you request the computer to search for.
  85.         
  86.         These enhancements speed up play and make a much higher game score easy
  87. to achieve.
