  68.      CrossDos  is  a software product that allows the user to read and
  69.      write  MS-DOS/PC-DOS and Atari ST formatted disks (Version 2.0 or
  70.      higher)  directly from AmigaDOS.  It fully integrates itself into
  71.      the  Amiga  operating system to allow your MS-DOS formatted disks
  72.      to  be  accessed from virtually any utility or application.  This
  73.      allows  you to access any MS-DOS file just as you would any other
  74.      Amiga   file.    For   more   information   about  its  features,
  75.      installation  procedures  and  other relevant facts, refer to the
  76.      manual, CrossDOS.manual, supplied with this release.

  78.           NOTE 
  79.           All  further  references  to  MS-DOS  formatted  disks  also
  80.           apply   to  PC-DOS  and  Atari  ST  formatted  disks  unless
  81.           otherwise specified.

  83.      The  release  you  presently  have is a "READONLY" version of the
  84.      CrossDos.   It  is a fully functional version of the product with
  85.      all  writing  functions disabled.  If any writes are attempted to
  86.      the  MS-DOS  disk  you  will get a "Write-Protected" requestor to
  87.      pop-up.  
  88.  
  89.      CrossDos  should  work  on ANY Amiga (500, 1000, 2000, etc.) with
  90.      ANY  hardware  configuration.   It  also  needs  Version  1.2 (or
  91.      higher)  of  the  Amiga operating system.  If you should have any
  92.      problems  with  any  configuration,  let  us  know by calling the
  93.      Technical  Support  phone  number  or  describing  the problem in
  94.      written form.

  96.      We   are  using  a  marketing  technique  which  we  are  calling
  97.      "TRYWARE"  for  this  product.   Try CrossDos and see if you like
  98.      it.   Get  comfortable  with it.  If you like it and you need the
  99.      capability  to  write  to  MS-DOS  disks,  fill in the order form
  100.      supplied  in  section  "ORDER  FORM"  and  send  a check or
  101.      money-order for the modest amount requested.

  103.      A  manual file is included with this "READONLY" release and it is
  104.      called  CrossDOS.manual.   This  manual  is written for the
  105.      user   who   has  purchased  the  "READ/WRITE"  version  so  that
  106.      references  to functions that require the ability to write do not
  107.      apply  for  this  release.   Although the use of CrossDos is very
  108.      simple  and  user transparent, a comprehensive manual is supplied
  109.      for technical reference.

  128.      What  is  "TRYWARE"  you say?  That is a valid question.  Just as
  129.      the  name  implies, you try something.  In this case, you try the
  130.      "READONLY"  version  of CrossDos.  If you like it and you need to
  131.      write  to  MS-DOS  disks, purchase the "READ/WRITE" version for a
  132.      modest amount.

  134.      We  at  CONSULTRON  are  just like anyone else.  We would like to
  135.      try  any  software  first  before  we  "fork over the big bucks".
  136.      This  is not a new idea, but it is sorely under-utilized.  Others
  137.      have  tried  this idea in its various forms (ie. shareware), with
  138.      mixed success.  
  139.  
  140.      We  at  CONSULTRON  are  also  trying  something  risky.   We are
  141.      pricing  this  product  well  below  what  you  might  expect for
  142.      something  of  this  complexity.   The only way we can succeed at
  143.      this  price  is  to  cut  overhead to the bone.  When you buy any
  144.      commercial  product,  not  only are you paying for the materials,
  145.      the  development costs and support personnel, you are also paying
  146.      for  advertising  in magazines and other promotional effects.  We
  147.      have  nothing  against  commercial promotion, but those costs may
  148.      contribute  anywhere  from  10  to  50 percent to the cost of the
  149.      product.

  151.      We  ask  YOU to become the bulk of our advertising.  Once you see
  152.      that  this  is  a  quality product, we hope you tell others about
  153.      it.   In  fact,  make  them  a copy of this "READONLY" release so
  154.      that they may try it for themselves.

  188.      The  installation  instructions  for mounting an MS-DOS device on
  189.      the  Amiga  is  detailed  in  the  following  sections.  A simple
  190.      program  is  included  in  this  product for standard 3 1/2" or 5
  191.      1/4" floppy drive installation.

  194.      3.1  Installing the Software and MountList Parameters    
  195.  
  196.      CrossDos  provides a simple installation script either executable
  197.      from the CLI only.   
  198.  
  199.      To execute the program from the CLI, type the following: 
  200.       
  201.           cd <directory where unarchived files are>
  202.           execute Install_MSDOSFS
  203.

  205.      If  you  wish  to  modifiy  these  standard  parameters, edit the
  206.      mountlist file.  
  207.  
  208.      The  files  will  be  transferred by this script to the following
  209.      directories: 
  210.           C:, LIBS:, L: and DEVS: 
  211.  
  212.      Some support files will not be transferred by this script.  
  213.  
  214.           NOTE 
  215.           There   is  a  bug  in  the  Version  1.2  and  Version  1.3
  216.           trackdisk.device  code  supplied  with  the  Amiga operating
  217.           system.   It  only  causes problems with this product if you
  218.           only  have one 3 1/2" floppy drive.  A patch program must be
  219.           executed   prior   to   using  this  product.   Two  patchs,
  220.           TDPatch12  and  TDPatch13  are  included for Version 1.2 and
  221.           Version  1.3  respectively.   Version  1.4 and beyond should
  222.           correct this problem.

  225.      3.2  Mounting a MS-DOS Device      
  226.  
  227.      Once   all  the  required  files  are  installed  in  the  proper
  228.      directories,  only  "mounting"  the  device is needed to have the
  229.      Amiga  recognize  the MS-DOS device.  The filesystem is "mounted"
  230.      by entering the command: 
  231.       
  232.           mount <devicename:> FROM DEVS:mountlist.msdosFS

  235.      The  "mount"  command  can be entered manually when needed or can
  236.      be executed in a startup routine such as "S:startup-sequence".

  246.      If  "mounted" in a startup-sequence, it can be setup to consume a
  247.      minimal  amount  of  memory  (approx. 80 bytes) until MS-DOS file
  248.      acccess is required.

  250.      Once  the  device  is  successfully  "mounted", the device can be
  251.      accessed  by  any utility or application by specifying the device
  252.      name.
