  1. Autocontour Help Information       *

  3. The Autocontour commands are use to
  4. set the current picture's contour's
  5. heights in a way that will evenly
  6. distribute a picture's heights
  7. amongst the contours.
  8.  
  9. You are responsible for choosing the
  10. pen patterns, pattern length and pen
  11. colors. Autocontour will choose
  12. heights for your contours.  Length
  13. of pattern effects how much detail
  14. is shown in your picture.
  15.  
  16. To use the Autocontour command, set
  17. a pattern of pens in the contour
  18. palette and pull down one of the
  19. two Autocontour menu sub-items.

  21. Detailed explanation of Autocontour:

  23. When you pull down the Autocontour
  24. menu sub-item, MandelVroom performs
  25. the following steps:
  26.  
  27.   1. Count number of contours in
  28.      contour palette.  To do this
  29.      the program starts with the
  30.      righmost contour and looks for
  31.      the first contour with a pen
  32.      number not equal to 1.
  33.  
  34.   2. Calculate number of pixels in
  35.      your picture minus the number
  36.      pixels that have an altitude
  37.      equal to the MaxIteration for
  38.      your picture.

  40.   3. Divide the number of pixels
  41.      from step 2 by the number of
  42.      contours in step 1.
  43.  
  44.   4. Calculate a histogram of the
  45.      number of pixels at each of the
  46.      possible heights.

  48. The number calculated in step 3 is
  49. the average number of pixels per
  50. contour.  Using the histogram data,
  51. the program allocates heights to
  52. contours from tallest to shortest.

  54. There are two flavors of
  55. AutoContour.  The above description
  56. describes first of the two flavors.
  57. The second differs from the first,
  58. in that once a given contour's
  59. height range is equal to one, all
  60. subsequent contour height ranges are
  61. set to one.
