- 1. Simple description
-
- Here is a list of the capabilities of the Alex Emulator:

- - Color support, with a 16 enties color map
- - 4096 color palette

- 2. The finished version also includes:

- - NAPLPS Capture buffer
- - IFF Snapshot ( NAPLPS Screens saved as Amiga graphic files )
- - On Screen Clock displaying elapsed time and money
- - Automatic dialing by category of service
- - Initialisation string for the modem

- 3. Getting started
-
- To start the emulator, Double-click the Alex icon with the left mouse
- button.
-
- The program starts in ASCII mode. You should see a white telephone
- telling you that you are disconnected.

- When NAPLPS mode is active you can also see at your right a
- stripe with multiple buttons. On each button there is an icon
- representing each of the Alex function keys. You can activate
- the Alex function key you want by clicking over it with the left
- mouse button.

- 4. Using Menus
-
- Menus are defined to help the user control the behavior of the
- Emulator. Press the rigth mouse button ( also called 'Menu'
- button ) and move the mouse over an item. To select an item, release
- the Menu button over the choosed item.

- If there is a letter on the rigth of a menu item ( like 'D'
- for Dial ), you can short circuit the selection of that item by
- pressing the letter with the right Amiga key.

- 5. Loggin in
-
- Everything you type is sent to the modem, so you can use commands
- like ATDT to try to log in. You can use the menu option
- DIAL to make the Emulator dial for you. Click in the empty
- container, type in your number and click on 'OK' to DIAL. But the
- best way is to directly select the category of service you desire
- using the menu option PHONEBOOK.

- The Emulator will know when you connect and will inform you by
- displaying for 5 seconds a small terminal at the bottom
- right corner of the screen.

- Once logged in, you can follow the usual entry procedure for all
- Alex terminals.

- 6. Once connected
-
- When you are connected, the Emulator behaves like a normal Alex
- terminal. You should consult the 'Keyboard' to see the differences
- between the Amiga keyboard and the standard Alex keyboard.

- To send a Break, you must use the menus, or press 'B' and
- the right Amiga key.
-
- To hangup you can, turn off the modem, use the Hangup menu item,
- press twice on the F10 key or double-click on the phone button
- at the bottom right of the screen.

- 7. Exiting
-
- To exit the Emulator, use the menu item 'QUIT' or press
- 'Q' with the right Amiga key.

- 8. List of Menu functions
-
- -- General --
- Dial: Permit you to Dial and connect somewhere
- Phone Book: Dial directly by chossing the type of service
- Hangup: Disconnect and hangup the phone
- Send Break: Send a break to the host
- SnapShot: SnapShot the screen and saves the image in a
- standard Amiga file format.
- Quit: Exit program

- Baud: (300..9600 bauds)
- Length: (7 or 8 bits)
- Parity: ( None,Even,Odd )
- Stop bits: ( 1 or 2 )

- ... En Francais : Used to change the language between English
- and french.
- Clock: Display the clock on the down right corner
- of the screen.
- ASCII <-> NAPLPS: Switch from ASCII mode to NAPLPS and vice
- versa. This is used to permit to escape
- if a transmit error occur that will change
- no-willingly the current mode.

- 9. Configuration files
-
- There is two configuration files.
- The first one is called Configuration and contains informations
- regarding prefered language and colors, type of phone line and the
- phone numbers associated with the services provided by Bell
- (Alex 1, Alex 2,...). This file is easily editable by using the
- special Editor provided in the package (see "Editor").

- The other file concerns initialisation string for the modem and
- associated costs for the different services. Though those setups
- won't change often, they are editable by using a normal ASCII editor. The format is:
