(c) 1987 Lightning Logger LLog Program
The Disk librarian for the Amiga
LLog is a very simple program to use.
Famous last words, Eh.
to install LLog copy llg.icon on master diskette to your sys:s directory. Llog program uses this icon to generate new icons
that can be selected along with the reader(LLread) to load a logger file from workbench.
USING LLOG
1.
load Lightning Log program (LLog) by either clicking on it's Icon from work bench or by typing llog from CLI. Once the logger is loaded you should see a copyright notice in the message window at the top of the screen. This window is used to prompt you w
hen to insert diskettes and give you other pertinent information.
you should also see 4 small black rectangles at the right side of
the logger window. The 2 rectangles under the Drives Note (to the extreme right) display the percentage full of the drive currently logged, these should be blank.
There will also be 2 black rectangles to the extreme right of the
Librarian note, these display the size of the volume file, and the size of the data file. These also should be blank.
At the bottom center of the logger there will be one more blank rectangle. This rectangle displays the number of volumes logged also should be blank.
2.
Click on the Drives gadget under the drives name (red square)
this will bring up a list of mounted devices. Select the drive you want to use as the log in drive (this will be the drive you will use to insert your disks for logging).
If you have a hard drive don,t select the hard drive we will cover this later. If you have a more than two floppy drives or 2 floppies and a hard drive ,you may elect to use 2 floppy drives for logging. Click on the 2nd drives gadget. When these drives
are selected a drives ready sign will appear in the rectangle left of the gadget clicked.
Selecting abort from the devices requester removes the selected device from the drives item.
3.
Once you have selected your logging drives, click on the load library gadget to load or create a new library. This brings up a string gadget. Enter the drive:path/name of the file you would like to name your file. The drive should not be the same as the d
rive(s) you selected to do the logging. (if the file is non-existent a requester will appear asking you if this is a new file). If you are creating a new library click on yes. If this is an existing file click on no. (if the file is existing evidently
you entered an incorrect file name and or path and the logger could not find the existing file.)
4.
Once the log file is loaded or you enter the name of the file
you wish to create is entered. The name should appear in the 2
rectangular windows under the "Librarian" note and if these are
new files the boxes to the right of these files will be blank.
If these files have previously been created and are loaded by the
logger. There sizes will be displayed in the rectangles to the
right of name of the file.
If these are pre existing files the amount logged rectangle(center bottom of logger) will display the number of previously logged items.
5.
Make sure the bottom left gadget of the logger says"MAN"
this is the manual mode of the logger. Install disks in the
drives indicated by the message center(at the top of the screen)
and click on the manual log gadget.
This will start the logger.
That's it!! the message center will prompt you when to insert new
diskettes for logging.
AUTO LOG
USE THIS WITH CAUTION -- WHERE AS DISK INSERTION IS READ BY THE
LOGGER..
follow the steps for manual logging except instead of clicking
on the manual"MAN" gadget. select AutoLog from the menu. This
should change the "MAN" gadget to "AUTO" ,There will be a message
displayed in the message center.
Click on the "AUTO" gadget THEN insert the disk(s) to be logged.
The logger will automatically start logging and will prompt you
when to change diskettes.
AFTER STARTING the logger IN the AUTO MODE you never have to click on the "AUTO" gadget again .. the logger will detect the
inserting of diskettes and will start logging again .
to end the program simply select quit from the menu.
The abort gadget is a simple way to stop the auto mode in case you want to insert a volume for display or reading with out being logged. After clicking on the abort gadget. It is necessary (when in auto) to click on the auto gadget again to re-initialize
the auto mode. (before inserting diskette(s) for logging.
LOGGING HARD DRIVES:
Simply select log hard drive from menu and device requester will
appear with each hard drive detected by the system.
Click on the hard drive to be logged and it will automatically be
logged( displaying free space in the message window)
If your hard drive has been previously logged the old volume will
be deleted and it will be relogged .
If unsure if a disk has been previously logged just insert it
into the logger and log. If this volume was previously logged and has changed the old volume will be deleted and the volume will be re-logged.
NOTE: the logger can not differentiate between a master or a copy created by a professional backup program such as marauder.(The volume creation dates are the same on the copy and
the original)
Lightning logger Uses the creation date and the last file updated
date to determine if a disk has been logged or updated(changed). Therefore volumes with the same names can be logged with no problem, and will be treated differently by the logger and reader.
Lightning Logger allows the user to catalog a disk collection.
It creates 2 files. The file with .llg extension is the librarian file.
It maintains the list of volumes logged.
The other file is the Data File and holds the names of the directories, file names ,comments, and other pertinent information. Once volumes have been logged with Lightning Logger, you can use Lightning Reader (LLread) to find files or comments without actua
lly finding and reading actual diskette.
This, in itself, reduces your locating time to a minimum.
Lighting logger works with micro-floppies,mini-floppies and hard drives RAM disks.
It is compatible with the Amiga 500,1000,2000.
Sorry, but Lightning Logger only works under AmigaDOS 1.2.
DELETE VOLUME
Allows the user to delete a volume from the volumes entered into the logger. When scrolling through the volume list
all volumes displayed in red are deleted. If you delete a volume
by mistake this volume can be restored by selecting it again and
clicking on "Delete" the restored volume will be restored and will be redisplayed in black.
Note* the actual volume is not deleted until a new library is written(delete volume only sets a flag so the LLread program
does not load this volume into memory.
When exiting form the log program, if you have volumes deleted by
the user or by the logger it's self the program will ask you if you would like write a new library.
Only at this time is the actual volume and it's associated files deleted. You may elect not to create a new library, thus keeping the old set of records available for restoring.

Clicking on the gadget (bottom gadget) displaying the name of the
volume will bring up a window with information about the currently loaded volume.
AUTO LOAD OF DEFAULT FILE
allowing the user to keep a standard lists of SKIP VOLUMES,SKIP
DIRECTORIES,SERIES and pre load a default logger file.
This default file must have the following format (and can be
created by ED,EDIT,Z or most other text editors)
this file must exists in the sys:s directory and the name must
be llg.def
VOL-SKIP list:
|VOL_SKIP|+,vol name,vol name, etc
the + means turn on the VOL-SKIP gadget
|DIR_SKIP|+,dir name,dir name etc
|SERIES|,volume series name
|DEFFILE|,vol:path/name
SAMPLE DEFAULT FILE:
|VOL_SKIP|+,a*,bar*,pix,Work*
|DIR_SKIP|,c,lib,fonts,devs,s,empty,t
|DEFFILE|,sys:t/mylib
|SERIES|,music
Default file meaning
1. Insert ITEMS in volume skip list and turn on VOL-SKIP gadget(RED)
2. WHEN SEARCHING..skip all volumes beginning with the letter "a",skip all volumes beginning with the letters bar, skip all volumes named "pix", skip all volumes beginning with the letters"WORk"
3. Insert Items in directory skip list, don,t turn on DIR-SKIP
gadget,When searching SKIP all c,lib, fonts, devs,s,empty and t directories.
4. Load Logger file located in sys:t directory. file name music.
5. The series to use if series-search selected is music.( only search through volumes name music)
Note on series search.
this is useful if you have a series of volumes such as
MUSIC1,music2,music3,music4 etc.
FILTER MENU
VOL-SKIP:
Allows the user to bypass selected volumes while searching.
** NOTE **
The VOL-SKIP gadget MUST be activated (RED)
WILD CARD CAN BE USED TO SKIP VOLUMES ..
ENTERING A* SKIPS ALL VOLUMES BEGINNING With the letter "A"
(Lightning Logger ignores differences between upper and lower case letters.)
DIR-SKIP:
Works much like VOL-SKIP but doesn't allow wild card
Example:
Entering c,lib,libs,empty,printers,devs,fonts etc.
Will skip these directories when searching.
SEARCH: Has three modes (wild card activated).
mode 1: Name.. searches through volumes to find matching file names.
mode 2: Note.. search through volumes to find matching file notes.
mode 3: Both.. searches through volumes for matching file name and file notes.
Example: To search for all files with a '.c' extension.
1. Select search from filter menu.
2. Select name from sub-menu.
3. Type *.c in the requester that appears.
4. If volumes entered in volume skip list click on
VOL-SKIP gadget(TURNS RED when activated).
If directories entered in directory skip list
click on DIR-SKIP gadget(RED when activated)
If series entered click on SERIES-SEARCH and search
begins
all file name ending in ".c" will be displayed on screen and if
match memory is available these matches will be held in memory to be recalled with the redisplay button until cleared when the next search begins.
SERIES* if you have a series of volumes IE: volume names ART1
ART2 ..ART44 and you only want to search through this series select series from the filter menu and enter ART (not the number) then enter the item to search for.
Now click on SERS-SEARCH gadget and search will only search through volumes belonging to this series..
you can abort the search at anytime using the abort button.
VOL-SKIP: If selected and volumes are entered into volume skip list, will bypass these volumes when searching.
DIR-SKIP: If selected and directories are enter into dir skip
list bypasses these directories when searching.
SERS-SRCH: Only searches thru volumes in a series.
GO-SEARCH: search thru all volumes.
RE-DISPLAY: If matching items are found and match memory is on
and set, these matching items can be displayed (or printed) by clicking on this gadget.
Re-display can be aborted by using the ABORT gadget.
FILES: Brings up window with logged volumes. Clicking on the volume name and then clicking on load , loads this volumes files(records) in to memory for display or printing.
Once the volumes files are loaded the volume name and creation date are displayed And clicking on this gadget opens a window that displays pertinent information about the selected volume.
When a volume is selected and it's files are loaded the list, opt a,cd and dir gadgets are activated.
They work similar to the AmigaDos commands with the same names,
but there are a few exceptions. When using the "CD" gadget entering ROOT: takes you back to the root directory of that volume.
Dir ,opt a and list display files and file notes. Filenotes begin
with":"
and are a different color than the regular entries.
ADDITIONAL NOTES
The log files created by lightning logger can be used with Lightning backup,to build files on a hard drive with existing files. This also allows the backup program to skip backing up programs that already exist on previous volumes.(why have repetitious )
Lighting Remove dup. uses lighting logger to remove (or print out) files you may have on other disks that are duplicated. Allowing you to remove these files with out having duplicate entries that take up valuable disk space.
Lightning logger can not differentiate between volumes previously
logged or volumes backed up by a nibbler backup program (such as Marauder)..
The volume creation dates will be the same. Therefore to lightning logger these will be the same disks. This is one thing you must tell the logger when the requester comes up asking you is this a copy .
Using the Lightning logger can reduce the time needed to find most files you need to a minimum.. if you follow a few rules..
If you have source code, gadgets, pictures etc. use filenote to enter a comment IE: for a picture file enter "pix","ham","art" etc. Then when searching, select note from filter menu, enter "pix",or what ever is applicable in your situation, and start the sea
rch.
The search will find all the file notes with these names in the comment field.
A future version will allow you to enter file notes(comments) directly from the logger program.
This version of the Lightning logger is compatible with the Amiga
A500, A1000,and A2000, but only runs under AMIGA DOS 1.2.
