- Here is how I run RamStart 122+ on a Mac+. First off I am presently
- running it with System 3.2b4 and Finder 5.3b1. I was running OK with
- System 3.1.1 and Finder 5.2 also. Start by creating a NEW folder. Put
- the files along with RamStart that you want on your RamDisk. I put the
- System and Finder in this folder as I want it to run in RAM. I also put
- the CrashSaver application in the folder (not the FKEY version). With
- the folder highlighted check Get Info and verify the size. Keep in mind
- that RamStart itself will not load. Calculate how much extra RAM you
- might want for temporary storage and make a note of it. I use 512K max
- as I have found that some programs will not run if you don't have 512K
- of memory outside the RamDisk. Now that sounds strange since most
- programs that run on a 512K Mac don't access all that memory. That
- might be the problem with ThinkTank. Oh yes, turn off the disk cache
- at first but you can experiment after. After you are set up double
- click RamStart to open it. When you reach the dialogue box that shows
- the amount of K immediately double click the K box to highlight it. You
- have to do this before autoload is complete. Set the desired K and then
- click Set. It should autoload and then return you back to the DeskTop
- with the "RamDisk" as the startup disk. You can then eject the floppy.
- It will not auto eject as it used to. If you want the RamDisk to
- automatically load at startup then shutdown, startup the floppy again
- and highlight RamStart and set startup. Shutdown again and restart.
- After the RamDisk is loaded run CrashSaver ONCE and then trash it. I
- suspect the FKEY does the same. This little utility just allows you to
- hit the interrupt switch (not reset) to return to the Finder when you
- get an Error bomb. I like the application version because trashing it
- saves 2K and frees up an FKEY slot for something else. If you tried
- running RamStart on your disk before and have since changed Systems be
- sure to trash any old folders and create a new folder. Even though I
- created a new folder I found that RamStart was still looking in the old
- folder and then creating an empty RamDisk because nothing was in that
- folder. It also will look for old discarded files in a folder if you
- substituted a new file for the old with the same name. That's why I
- create a new folder whenever I make a substitution of files using the
- same name. Another surprising idiosyncracy is that if a file does not
- load on startup, go back and make sure it is visible in the open folder
- window and second try moving it to another slot in the folder and click
- Clean up. I run a fully loaded System file (DAs, FKEYs and Fonts) in
- RAM and TermWorks, PackIt II and ThrowPaint in RAM. I then run an
- application disk in the internal drive and save documents to my old
- 400K external drive. This works pretty good. If I am just
- telecommunicating then I save to either drive.
