Using DIRectory is an easy way to keep track of what you have on your disks. DIRectory displays the disk contents as icons like the Finder. The Hierarchical File System as well as the old Macintosh File System is supported. The printed report shows the disks folder structure and displays the icons.
For more detailed information please refer to the short manual below.
Manual
The purpose of this program is to display the content of your disks as icons. The icons have the same location inside the folders, and the folders have the same size and location, as under the Finder. This way you get the convenience of having all your disks 'online', combined with the usual icon display, without having to swap disks. It is possible to get a report printed on paper.
Ñ About New
The Demo library document must be named DemoLib and should be located in the same folder as DIRectory Demo.
Ñ About Open╔
The Demo library document must be named DemoLib and should be located in the same folder as DIRectory Demo.
Ñ How to open a disk or a folder
Double-click the disk or folder.
Ñ About Merge╔
Merge makes it possible to concatenate another DIRectory file to your disk directory. If you have only one disk drive both the source and the destination file should be on the same disk to avoid extensive disk swapping. You may specify that you want the latest version if disk duplicates are found, otherwise duplicate disks are not replaced. Merge has not been implemented in the Demo version.
Ñ How to close all windows of a disk
Hold down the option key when closing one of the windows.
Ñ About Save
Save updates and compacts the disk library file. It is automatically done when you close the file, but can be done manually to compact the file.
Ñ About Get Info
Get Info displays the information for the selected item. The folder size is the actual size of all items in the folder. The backup date is shown if used. Hold down the option key if you want to search the entire directory file for an application that created the selected document. If the application is not on the same disk as the document you are informed about its location.
Ñ Log
Select All if you want to read all connected disk drives including RamDisks and HardDisks. You may otherwise choose to log a single online volume. Log has not been implemented in the Demo version.
Ñ How to read a disk
Insert the disk you want to read. The disk will not be relogged if already logged and not changed. The disk is selected if logged. The disk will automatically be ejected. If you hold down the command key the disk will be mounted instead.
Ñ How to delete a disk from the directory
Select the disk and choose Delete from the File menu.
Ñ About Print╔
Use Print to get the selected disk or folder with contents printed on paper. The Help text or a Clipboard containing text can also be printed on paper (if a disk library file is open).
Ñ About Print All╔
The entire disk library file is printed. See also About Print Options╔. You can also use Print from Finder to print a selection of documents.
Ñ How to save a file's path
Select the icon and copy or add the filename. Not only the filename, but the entire path will be copied. Use Append to add the file path to the current Clipboard text. Useful if you want to save a selection of filenames with their paths.
Ñ How to find a file, folder or disk
Use Find from the Search menu. If the option Disk is enabled the search is limited to disk names. If found, the item will be selected. The search can be terminated with 'command-period'. Selected in the Search menu scrolls in the selected icon.
Ñ How to find a disk with enough free space
Enable the Find option Disk (K) and specify the amount of Kbytes needed.
Ñ About the Font menu
All windows are affected by a change of font.
Ñ About the Size menu
Get Info windows are always size 9.
Ñ About the View menu
Choose between small icons, icons and sorted by name. Clean Up reorganizes messy folders in alphabetic order. It is also possible to drag icons. Hold down the shift key to constrain dragging along one axis.
Ñ About the Options menu
MacinTalk should be placed on a mounted volume in the System Folder if any otherwise in the root.
Ñ About View Options╔
If Alphabetic is chosen the disks are shown in alphabetic order. This is always the case for the Demo version.
Disable Kind, Size, Modified, Comment or Creator & Type if you don't want them to be shown in folders sorted by name.
Ñ About Print Options╔
Disable Kind, Size, Modified, Comment or Creator & Type if you don't want them to be printed. Select the depth of the report to be printed. Everything downto the selected option is printed. If activated the filter function lets you specify which files you want to show or hide. In addition to the predefined file types it is also possible to define a user type. Disks and folders insignificant to the file filter are suppressed. If Alphabetic is chosen the disks are printed in alphabetic order otherwise they are printed in the same order as they were logged. The settings of Print Options including Font and Size are saved for each document.
Ñ About the Transfer menu
You can launch applications on any disk in the directory file by double-clicking the icon while holding down the command key.
Ñ About MFS disks
The folder structures of MFS disks are reconstructed by DIRectory.
Ñ About MultiFinder
DIRectory can be executed under MultiFinder. However you might get default icons, not attain the Get Info comment texts and the folders on MFS disks because the DeskTop file containing the information is locked by the Finder under MultiFinder. This is the case for disks which are mounted by the Finder. Unmount them from the Finder, delete them from the directory file and reinsert them to DIRectory to get all information. HardDisks should be logged without MultiFinder since they are always mounted by the Finder.
Ñ About big screens
If you are using a big screen and are going to log a large amount of disks then decrease the size of the disk window. This will decrease the window updating due to less rearrangement of visible disks.
Ñ System requirements
DIRectory requires System version 4.1 or later.
