- What's the difference between retail and online?
-
- The version of WebScan you buy in the store (retail) and the one you
- download from a McAfee online service are basically the same. However,
- please note that only the retail version offers these features:

- WebScan product. The online version does not offer secure HTTP.
-
- - Pegasus Mail encryption capabilities are offered ONLY with the
- retail WebScan product.
-
-
- ____________
- Installation
-
- Review these basic requirements for installing and running WebScan.
-
- - Windows 3.1x, Windows 95, or Windows NT
- - CONFIG.SYS set to at least FILES=50
- - Internet access through a LAN, or using a modem capable of
- 9600 baud or faster and connected to a telephone line
- - External modems powered on, if you use this type of modem
- - Note the communications port to which the modem is connected.
-
- Your main steps for completing the WebScan installation are:
-
- - Start the Installer and identify the destination for copying
- files.
-
- - Identify the Web browsers to which you want to add the anti-virus
- component, WebSafe.
-
- - Enter configuration information for SPRY Mosaic Web Browser.
-
- - Set up the Pegasus Mail component.
-
- Read the following paragraphs for details about installing from diskette
- or from the BBS and McAfee Web site.
-
-
- FROM DISKETTE
-
- If you purchased the retail version of WebScan, you received four diskettes.
- You also received a printed "Getting Started" guide that you can use to
- supplement the installation procedure.
-
- To install, insert Disk 1 and then enter the following command in the
- Windows Run box:
-
- x:setup
-
- where x is the drive that contains the diskette.
-
- Then follow the instructions on the installation dialogs.
-
-
- FROM THE BBS OR WEB SITE
-
- WebScan is available from the BBS or the McAfee Web site
- (www.mcafee.com). You'll need to download these files:
-
- WBS100E0.ZIP
- WBS100E1.ZIP
- WBS100E2.ZIP
- WBS100E3.ZIP
- WBS100E4.ZIP
-
- Decompressing Your Files:
-
- Use PKUNZIP to decompress the WebScan product files
- either onto floppy diskettes or into a directory on your
- hard drive or server. These files are automatically copied
- into the appropriate directory structure when you unzip them.
-
- Before you install, you'll want to verify that the files you
- downloaded are exactly the same as when we posted them online.
- We recommend you perform this task for maximum anti-virus
- protection. Read the following paragraphs to learn how to
- validate your file.
-
-
- Validating Your Files:
-
- Included in the files you downloaded is the Validate program
- (version 2.0.1). Validate is a file-authentication program that
- you can use to check program files for signs of tampering.
- Validate uses two methods of generating Cyclic Redundancy Checks
- (CRC's), and then displays the information so you can compare
- these statistics against the "known value" for the program files.
- The dual CRC checking provides a high degree of security.
- The known value you use for validation is usually provided by the
- author of the program, or you may receive it from a trusted
- information database. You can find the statistics for
- WebScan in the file PACKING.LST.
-
- To confirm that a program file has not been tampered with, run the
- Validate program and then record the validation data produced.
- Compare this data against the file statistics the program author has
- specified. If the information matches, most likely the program
- has not been modified since McAfee put the files online.
-
-
- To run VALIDATE, enter the following command:
-
- VALIDATE <path spec>
-
- where <pathspec> is the name of a directory and file. (The
- wildcard characters, "*" and "?", can be used when specifying
- <pathspec>.)
-
- The VALIDATE program displays the following information:
-
- <name of directory>
- name of file (starting at row 1)
- extension of file (starting at row 10)
- size of file (starting at row 15)
- date of file (starting at row 25)
- time of file (starting at row 35)
- check method 1 (starting at row 44)
- check method 2 (starting at row 51)
- SAMPLE TXT 12345678 01-01-80 12:01a 1A2B 3C4D
- <number> file(s) have been validated.
-
-
-
- Starting the Install Program:
-
- Before you install, we recommend that you access the online
- "Getting Started" manual which contains installation instructions.
- To do this follow the steps below:
-
- * Start the Acrobat Reader.
-
- NOTE: If you do not already have the Acrobat Reader, you can
- download it from the McAfee home page located at www.mcafee.com.
- Once you arrive at the home page, just select 'Download McAfee,'
- 'Download McAfee Product,' and get the file ACROREAD from the
- utility area. Then run ACROREAD.EXE and follow the instructions
- on the screen to install the reader.
-
- * Open the WEBTOC.PDF file from the DISK0 directory.
-
- * Click on the chapter containing the information you'd like to view.
-
-
- To install WebScan after downloading the product files:
-
- - Run SETUP.EXE, located on either the first diskette or in the DISK1
- directory, depending on the destination to which you decompressed the files.
-
- - When you are prompted for Disk 2, either place the second diskette into
- the drive or change the directory name to DISK2 and click OK.
-

- Using the WebScan Anti-virus Feature
-
-
- WHEN TO SCAN
-
- For WebScan to perform virus checks successfully, you need to select
- one file at a time to download. If you select a second file to
- download while the first is being scanned, an error message is displayed.
-
-
- WHAT GETS SCANNED
-
- WebScan checks for and alerts you to viruses in executable program files and
- in Microsoft Word document files. WebScan determines whether files are
- executables or documents based on the data type identified in your Browser.
- For example, Microsoft Word document files are usually identified as the
- data type 'application/msword'.
-
- At the time of this release, WebScan checks the following data types
- for viruses:
-
- NOTE: We are continually adding to the list of data types checked.
-
- application/octet-stream
- application/octet-string
- application/x-msdownload
- application/msword
- application/x-zip-compressed
- application/zip
-
- Refer to your Browser documentation if you need to specify a different
- data type for downloading files.
-
-
- ADDING WEBSCAN TO A WEB BROWSER
-
- The WebScan anti-virus component, WebSafe, is automatically added and has been
- tested with the following Web browsers:
-
- - NetScape Navigator (16-bit version for Windows 3.x and Windows 95;
- the 32-bit version is not supported)
- - All versions of SPRY Mosaic
- - Netcom NetCruiser.
-
- However, you can add WebSafe to Web browsers other than those listed above.
- You can use the following procedure as a guide.
-
- NOTE: We recommend that you do not install WebSafe to the Microsoft Internet
- Browser. We are currently experiencing unpredictable results during our testing.
- However, WebSafe may be compatible with this browser in a future release.
-
- FOR QUARTERDECK QMosaic
- * Select Tools/Preferences
- * Display the Data Engine tab page
- * Select a data type (for example, Application Octet-stream)
- * Click on External Viewer Application
- * Click in the text box and enter the following command
-
- x:\MCAFEE\WEBSCAN\AV\WEBSCAN.EXE /SAVE /BUSY
-
- where x: is the drive that contains the \MCAFEE directory
-
- NOTE: Be careful to click in the text box first before you
- begin typing, since the MIMEtypes have speed search!
-
-
- FOR AMERICA ONLINE (2.5 Windows only)
- * Browse the Web
- * Click the Prefs button
- * Click the Helper Apps button at top right to display the "Modify" dialog
- * Click Use Separate Application and browse for WEBSCAN.EXE (it is installed
- under the directory \MCAFEE\WEBSCAN\AV)
- * Enter the switches /SAVE /BUSY after WEBSCAN.EXE
- * Save the settings.
-
-

- Switching from a Network Connection to a Modem
-
- The SPRY Switcher program is automatically installed with
- WebScan. This program allows you to quickly switch from a network
- communication method to a modem. During installation, the files
- SWITCH.EXE and SWITCH.HLP are copied to this
- directory:
-
- \MCAFEE\WEBSCAN\BROWSE\BIN
-
- In addition, the Switcher program is automatically configured.
- However, if you install a new WINSOCK.DLL (the program that allows
- applications to communicate on the Internet), you'll need
- to set up the Switcher program. Please contact McAfee's
- Customer Service if you need help with this configuration. Refer
- to the contact information provided below for the phone number.
-
- _________________
- Program Anomalies
-
- If you decide to uninstall WebScan, check for the existence of
- the file WINSOCK.LAN in the following directory:
-
- - In Windows 3.1 and 95, look in the \WINDOWS
- - In Windows NT, look in the \SYSTEM32 under your Windows NT
- directory
-
- If the file exists, rename it as follows:
-
- WINSOCK.DLL
