  10. GENERAL INFORMATION
  11. -------------------
  12.  
  13. Surfer Central is a great tool that allows you to organize and maintain
  14. your Internet addresses. Addresses can be assigned to different 
  15. categories and all database fields are customizable. Surfer Central
  16. also acts as a toolbar for all of your Winsock applications.
  17.  
  18. NOTE: The evaluation of Surfer Central is limited to 50 addresses in 
  19. a database. If you import a Netscape bookmark file, for example, and
  20. try to save it, you will not be allowed to. For an unlimited number
  21. of addresses in a database file you must register Surfer Central.
  22.  
  23. This version of Surfer Central is classified as shareware. You have 30
  24. days to evaluate Surfer Central after which continued use requires that 
  25. you register the program.

  27. The shareware version of the program is freely distributable.

  30. UPGRADING

  35. -=> It is recommended that you do a FULL installation <=-

  37. If you are upgrading to version 1.21 of Surfer Central and would like 
  38. to preserve your settings, there is one important item of note: If you 
  39. want to keep your existing setup (i.e. Window size, site list header, 
  40. winsock tools configuration, etc.), when you are presented with the 
  41. dialog box that allows you to select the type of installation (full, 
  42. minimal, custom) choose the Custom option. When prompted for groups 
  43. of files to install, deselect the User Initialization file option. 
  44. You may allow the installation to continue and safely copy over old 
  45. versions of the files. The new version (1.21) will read your old 
  46. SURFRCEN.INI file correctly.
  47.  
  48. NOTE: If things don't look right after you perform the above steps
  49. (particularly if the category summary dialog box appears blank), 
  50. simply exit Surfer Central and reload it. That should solve the problem.

  53. INSTALLATION
  54. ------------
  55.  
  56. ** IMPORTANT **  --  if you have not unzipped the zip file 
  57. SURFR120.ZIP using the -d option, please delete the files that
  58. you have uncompressed and repeat the unzipping process using
  59. the command:
  60.  
  61.         PKUNZIP -d SURFR120.ZIP
  62.  
  63. If you are using another utility such as WinZip, please indicate
  64. that you would like the directory structure within the zip file
  65. preserved.
  66.  
  67. After the files have been correctly uncompressed you should be
  68. left some text files and two other files in the directory 
  69. (INSTALL.EXE and INSTALL.INF). There should also be a 
  70. subdirectory named DISK1 containing the compressed Surfer 
  71. Central program files.

  73. To install Surfer Central, run INSTALL.EXE from within Windows 
  74. and follow the instructions. After installation you will be presented
  75. with a readme file (this one). Please EXIT NotePad when you have
  76. completed reading the file.

  78. NOTE: If you have not yet loaded Windows, you may type INSTALL from
  79. the DOS prompt (in the directory where INSTALL.EXE is located) and
  80. Windows will be loaded automatically.

  83. OTHER NOTES
  84. -----------

  86. - A handy uninstall utility has been included with Surfer Central.
  87.   To remove the program from your system, find the Windows Program
  88.   Manager group containing the Surfer Central icon. Also in this
  89.   group will be an icon marked 'Uninstall Surfer Central'. Simply
  90.   click here and the program will be completely removed
  91.  
  92.         IMPORTANT: Your data files will also be deleted if they
  93.         are contained in a subdirectory beneath the Surfer Central
  94.         directory (e.g. in \SURFRCEN\DATABASE).

  96. - A printed manual has not been included with this version of Surfer
  97.   Central. However, FULL details about all program functions and
  98.   procedures for registration are provided in the Help file. To view
  99.   this information, run Surfer Central by double-clicking on the
  100.   program icon and choose Contents from the Help menu.

  102.   PLEASE: I encourage you - if things are not clear, please get

  104.           help solve your problem.

  106. - Surfer Central has been tested using Windows 95. My tests suggest 
  107.   that the program is compatible with Windows 95. The only known 
  108.   problem is with the HWA contents tree - clicking topics on the 
  109.   tree does not change to the corresponding topic in the help window. 
  110.   This problem is currently being investigated by Olson Software 
  111.   (makers of HWA).
