Among the early inhabitants of the region were the Sumerians, masters of craftsmanship who gave the world its first large cities, first known writing system, and first codified laws. Later, Sumerian culture influenced the Babylonians and Assyrians who dominated the region throughout much of the second and first millennia BC.
