  143.                        GET INFORMATION OVER THE NETWORK

  145.    Many of the resources listed in this document are stored on the computer
  146.    network ("the net").  The following are a few of those locations and how to
  147.    get things from them.

  149. FTP, WAIS, archie
  150.  
  151.    You may have access to the File Transfer Protocol (FTP) to copy information
  152.    from another computer to your own.  For information on FTP, send e-mail to
  153.    mail-server@rtfm.mit.edu with "send usenet/news.answers/finding-sources" in
  154.    the body.

  156. World Wide Web (WWW)
  157.  
  158.    WWW stands for "World Wide Web".  The WWW project, started by CERN (the
  159.    European Laboratory for Particle Physics), seeks to build a distributed
  160.    hypermedia system.
  161.  
  162.    To access the web, you run a browser program.  The browser reads documents,
  163.    and can fetch documents from other sources.  Information providers set up
  164.    hypermedia servers which browsers can get documents from.
  165.  
  166.    The browsers can, in addition, access files by FTP, NNTP (the Internet news
  167.    protocol), gopher and an ever-increasing range of other methods.  On top of
  168.    these, if the server has search capabilities, the browsers will permit
  169.    searches of documents and databases.

  171.    The document "World Wide Web Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)" is posted to
  172.    news.answers, comp.infosystems.www, comp.infosystems.gopher,
  173.    comp.infosystems.wais and alt.hypertext on the 1st and 15th of every month
