  21. 1. How does one go about joining Toastmasters?

  23.      First, of course, you must have found a club to join.  If you
  24.      have visited a club and found it to your liking, ask a member
  25.      (preferably an officer, who is more likely to be able to help
  26.      you) for an application form.  
  27.  
  28.      According to the bylaws all Toastmasters clubs operate under,
  29.      any new member of a club must be voted into membership by the
  30.      club.  In practice, this rarely happens.  Instead, members are
  31.      welcomed enthusiastically into the club as soon as a standard
  32.      membership application ("Form 400") is turned in with a check
  33.      for the appropriate dues.

  35. 2. How much does membership cost?
  36.  
  37.      Upon joining Toastmasters, you will find yourself paying three
  38.      different fees.  One is the standard $16.00 fee that every new
  39.      member must pay in order to receive educational materials (see
  40.      below).  One is the standard International dues, $3.00 per
  41.      month.  One is your Club dues, if any.
  42.  
  43.      All Toastmasters clubs are billed in March and September for
  44.      semi-annual dues for their members who wish to remain members
  45.      for the next six months.  If you join in between those
  46.      periods, you submit a _pro-rated_ share of the dues.

  48.      Clubs usually charge dues on top of the world dues.  This is
  49.      so they'll have money in the treasury for expenses.  It's up
  50.      to each club what they want to charge.  Some clubs waive the
  51.      club dues for new members and only assess them at the semi-
  52.      annual dues payment dates.

  54.      So, to make a long story short, if you join at the following
  55.      times, you'd owe:

  57.      April or October:     $16.00  +  $18.00   +  club dues
  58.      May or November:      $16.00  +  $15.00   +  club dues
  59.      June or December      $16.00  +  $12.00   +  club dues
  60.      July or January       $16.00  +   $9.00   +  club dues
  61.      August or February    $16.00  +   $6.00   +  club dues
  62.      September or March    $16.00  +   $3.00   +  club dues

  64.      Then, once you're signed up, dues of $18.00 are assessed every
  65.      six months, in September and March.

  67.      * Note: due to California law, members of _California_ clubs
  68.      pay sales tax on their new member fee.

  70. 3. Are my dues tax deductible?
  71.  
  72.      In the United States, they are -- IF your job is of a sort
  73.      that requires or necessitates good communications skills.  In
  74.      other words, it must be an educational expense to be tax
  75.      deductible.  Toastmasters International will send you complete
  76.      tax deduction explanations if you request them to do so.

  78. 4. What do I get for my dues?
  79.  
  80.      Your $18.00 semi-annual dues paid to World Headquarters goes
  81.      partly for a subscription to the _Toastmaster_ magazine
  82.      (which, to be honest, is an excellent magazine), partly to
  83.      support development of new educational programs (they've got
  84.      some *nice* new programs coming out these days), partly to
  85.      support operations at World Headquarters (i.e. the staff who
  86.      process membership applications, CTM applications, new club
  87.      applications, etc. etc. ad nauseam), and partly to support
  88.      your local District organization.  
  89.  
  90.      Dues went up for the first time in over ten years last year
  91.      and as a result, dues should not rise for a long time (it was
  92.      like pulling teeth to get the most recent dues raise through,
  93.      and some members remain unconvinced that it was necessary). 
  94.      This raise had a lot to do with printing costs and so forth
  95.      quintupling over the last decade.

  97.      Your club dues generally go to pay for the club's supplies,
  98.      such as ballots, awards, ribbons, and educational materials. 
  99.      In some cases, such as when your club has a meal at each
  100.      meeting, your dues may go to pay for that.

  102. 5. What do I get for my New Member fee?
  103.  
  104.      Your $16.00 New Member fee gets you the following:
  105.           * the Communication and Leadership project manual
  106.           * the "Gestures - Your Body Speaks" manual
  107.           * the "A Speaker's Guide to Evaluation" manual
  108.           * the Voice manual
  109.  
  110.      The latter three are instructional manuals rather than project
  111.      manuals.  Only the first is a workbook.
  112.  
  113. 6.  If I want to drop out of Toastmasters after joining, what do I
  114. do?
  115.  
  116.      Simply wait for March or September to arrive and don't pay
  117.      your dues again.
  118.  
  119. 7.  How receptive are clubs to new members?
  120.  
  121.      Since most people are genuinely terrified of public speaking,
  122.      Toastmasters has its hands full recruiting members.  There's
  123.      virtually no chance that you won't be enthusiastically
  124.      welcomed into any club you join and immediately be considered
  125.      one of the gang.

  127.      Occasionally, however, people get into bad situations, but the
  128.      same is true of ANY organization.  There are jerks everywhere. 
  129.      Toastmasters probably has its share.  For this reason, the
  130.      author of this FAQ considers it a good idea to visit ALL
  131.      Toastmasters clubs in your area before deciding which one you
  132.      want to join.

  134. 8.  If I join, will they make me speak?
  135.  
  136.      No.  You will not be asked to speak unless you're ready to. 
  137.      If you feel more comfortable waiting a few months, that's
  138.      fine.
